Match thread: Mönchengladbach - Liverpool

I enjoyed that. Good stuff from Cole, Shelvey, Gerrard, Insua and Ecclestone. Nice sharp passing, triangles, 1-2's and good fitness work.
Still mix and match obviously but I'm happy enough with it.

To say that Arsenal, Chelsea and Utd are scoring for fun is just wrong though. They're not enjoying the best pre seeaon either.
Their players already know how to play alongside each other. Pre season for them is just selling tickets and getting the fat ones in shape.

Whereas we have serious problems that needed fixing before the season. We've not fixed them, we've wasted this time and it will cost us when the season starts. It's perfectally correct to say it's only kids playing, i can't argue with that. But look at what you're saying. You've failed to achieve something that needed to be done. Just because you have a valid excuse means nothing. This isn't school work or uni exams. We had work to do, the only option was to do it. Instead, as usual, we've used some reason to excuse ourselves. The bottom line is we're just fucking ourselves over.
But when the 'excuse' is not risking injuring your senior player excessively by making them play so early after their WC has finished, it's understandable & acceptable.

Hansern claimed that Arsenal and Man U weren't having a good preseason, that's why I posted their results.

But I give a fuck, because we've got two games left before the premier league start and Arsenal are way ahead of us fitness-wise.

i agree i wasn't talking about picking senior players. i'm talking about working on the tactics, runs movements. getting a formation sorted, organisation and defending set pieces. hodgson should have drilled all of this into the team. basically just getting the team playing cohesively and practising the things they need to do in order to win games.

instead we've just used it as a chance to improve the squads fitness. lucas may be fit, but its fuck all use because he is still playing exactly the same way and in exactly the same role that he did last year

Against shit teams. sure.

I have to say I share Modokay and Hanserns concerns after watching that match. It's all very well and nice saying pre-season is about gaining fitness and giving the youngsters a run out but our next game is in two weeks and our first team - whatever it is - hasn't played together at all. We still look like we can't pass the ball to save our lives half the time and consequently there have been no goals to really speak of.

I don't think we can compare ourselves to the likes of Arsenal or United either. Our team looked like a bunch of strangers at the best of times last season and since then there has been a fair bit of upheaval.

Is it just the 2nd leg of the qualifier left before the league season starts?

I would normally say pre-season is irrelevant, but we looked awful in pre-season last summer, and that carried on almost seamlessly into the season itself.

There are obvious concerns, but at the same time I don't think it's true to say (as Modokay did earlier) that United and Arsenal have played better teams than us. The MLS or the Bundesliga? Hodgson is clearly concentrating on making us disciplined and safe at the back, and I think that's reasonable. Plus most of our attacking players are still in the first weeks of training. We all know the squad is too thin, but apparently we have no money so we can't buy our way out of that trouble.

We need to get the Mascher sale through and buy ourselves a new DM, LB and striker. And we need to show the kind of passion in our first two games that we showed against United at home last season. We're not going to play Arsenal and City off the park, but if we can get 4pts from those two matches, it will be a huge achievement in the circumstances. The fear, obviously, is that we end up with 1pt or less...

That's my fear.

It doesn't always work like that though. I was really worried about the Rabotnicki match and it ended up as a cakewalk. Obviously the Robots are not in the same class as any of the PL teams we'll face, but it's still a good sign that we got the result when we needed it.

Nah, it doesn't.

More than anything I suppose I'm just trying to make the point that just because it's pre-season doesn't really mean you can dismiss all concerns with "meh, it's just pre-season!", which I'm guessing was the same point you were making also.

It's just the game against Robotnics, but Roy said today that he's considering playing one more friendly before the PL starts. The thing is though, some smart knob has arranged a meaningless International friendly on the 11th of august. After a WC and 2 days before the season. I hope all our English lads drop it, but I guess that a fat chance.

Modo, if we played Austrian amateurs and Barnet we would have won aswell. Chelsea lost again today against Frankfurt, 2-1.

Utd are playing shite MLS teams, but hardly set the world on fire. We've played a Swiss premier team that had started their domestic season, and 2 good Bundesliga sides. It's quite a difference tbh.

Either way, after watching the game now I can only say that I hope thats the last we see of Insua. Slow, turns like brick house, postional sense like a blind man, and gets beat constantly by his man.

If we start the season with him as our left back, it's a crisis. Liability and not good enough.

You could see that his mind wasn't at the game at all, and he should have stayed at Melwood, or been on a plane to Italy.

Re: Match thread: Mönchengladbach - Liverpool

Pre-season means fuck all.

We're not even 'Liverpool' at the minute. We're a load of unfit kids and newbies. There's no point in analysing it too much.

It's always like this after a World Cup.

You just pinpointed the problem, "We're not even 'Liverpool' at the minute".
Like I said we're playing Arsenal in two weeks time and our first team is still missing 3 vital players. Kuyt, Reina and Torres. Mascherano hasn't left or been replaced. The team won't have enough time to gel.

Ha ha..I wish. But hey I'm just a bit worried. We had a similar start last season and it just carried on. This time it's even worse because of the world cup and we've got Arsenal, Man U and Man city within the first 5 games.

The most worrying thing about the state we're in is manifested by the fact that Insua and Aurelio are still our LB options.

It's pitiful

You cannot properly 'gel' in pre-season because the opposition are always so shit. It would be better if we were in some pre-season tournament for half decent teams, but alas.

Are United and Chelsea and co putting out their first teams already? Are we suggesting that WC players shouldn't get an extended rest?

That, or Hodgson hasn't a fucking clue.
