Mascherano set to leave Liverpool after talks

By Harry Harris, Football Correspondent

July 26, 2010

Javier Mascherano has been told he can leave Liverpool, according to ESPNsoccernet sources, having held talks with the Liverpool hierarchy on Monday.

Mascherano, who captained Argentina at the World Cup, spoke with manager Roy Hodgson after returning from holiday, having previously ignored the new manager's attempts to contact him.

A source close to Mascherano told Soccernet: "The talks were extremely amicable. It was all done in a very nice way. Javier made it clear that he wanted to leave a year ago when he had the chance to go to Barcelona.

"He was asked to stay on for one more year, he agreed, so now it is time for him to go. It was all very pleasant and it is now a question of the two clubs who are interested in him making an acceptable offer to Liverpool."

Hodgson held talks with skipper Steven Gerrard and convinced him to stay, but has failed to convince Mascherano, who now looks likely to rejoin former manager Rafael Benitez at Inter Milan or seal a move to Spanish champions Barcelona, who are looking to replace Yaya Toure after admitting defeat over Arsenal's Cesc Fabregas.

if its true, the quicker the better - we don't want to panic buy another aquilani

Gutted, he is one of my favourite players. Hopefully there is a bidding war for his services but I can only see that happening if Man City get involved.

Its going to be all over the papers tomorrow. Gutted. I wouldn't mind a cheeky bid for boateng at city.

Prince Boateng???

If it's the new German fullback he just signed for them...

I loved Mascherano - cries

if balotelli goes, i think the money will be going straight back to us via inter. come on barca bid bid bid

Yep.

i rate De Jong very highly.

yea he's pretty good and similar, but do you not think its an opportunity to bring in someone with a better all round game?

Yeah for sure...

I just worry about Aquilani's all round game and if Gerrard would be willing to become a midfield general again...Gerrard was almost a striker under Rafa and he seems to like that role. I would just have concerns that we may be left with gaping holes in the centre of the park.

Id love to see Gerrard and Aquilani adapt in the centre and form and excellent partnership. I believe Roy managed to have Murphy and Bullard controling a lot of games for Fulham and our lads have better abilities in both defensive and attacking terms.

I like to think that people are not robots and as such any player can adapt to any situation as long as they have the determination and ability. There is no denying that both our midfielders have the technique and ability but do they have that 'bite' required?!

Lass Diarra, Banega could fit?! Im sitting here wrecking my brain trying to think of balanced midfielders that would currently be available.. It almost seems that players have been moulded over recent years to either be defensive or attacking and not many regularly play with a combination of both. Schweinsteiger has improved his game vastly over the last 4/5 years and would be perfect.

to be honest i have no faith in aquilani or lucas at all, i wouldn't mind if they were backup only the whole season.

I agree with what you're saying about gerrard, be it age or whatever i don't think hes as committed to being a full on central midfielder anymore and he works well with torres playing further forward. rafa seemed to be trying to mould lucas to be more defensive and he just hasn't got it, i don't see aquilani ever being able to offer more defensively and his passing was shite at times last season.

we had gerrard, alonso and mascherano together, we need to match that quality again. schweinsteiger would be superb, james milner would be alright but he's hugely over priced. scott parker has the mascherano attitude we all loved.

schweinsteiger and parker would have all the 'bite' we'd ever need.

just don't replace him with scharner fuk sake

Wouldnt suprise me if we were to bid for Cattermole when we get the Mascherano cash.
probably pay too much for him as well, thats depressing

Loved Masher but if he's going, he's going. Thanks & goodbye.

Now is the chance to bring in someone with more to his game than just 'bite'. How about someone with a touch less bite but a better range of passing, I'd like there to be more connection between midfield and attack, especially if SG, Cole & Nando is going to be our front three - it's pointless having them there if we can't get the ball to them often enough.

Someone who can break up the play, start new attacks (and continue his runs to join them) and also win possession in the air from punts into midfield would be enough of an improvement for me.

Here's another link for you then :

I can never understand why people fail to believe a story which we all know to be highly likely to be on the mark just because it's a journo they don't like.

We have many players who can play in the hole and with mascherano on the way out, the team needs a central midfielder. Gerrard is one of the best in the business. As captain, its no so much what he like or wants to do, its what he needs to do to make us a force to be reckoned with.

I would rather have Aqualani (instead of Lucas) with Gerrard in the middle of the park with Cole/Jovanovic in the hole.

Isn't De Jong from citeh available?

Wow, this *is* surprising news!

Jesus Christ, it's been common knowledge he was going to leave for ages.

We need to get it sorted quick, and hope that Pursssslow releases enough money to get a top class CM replacement; we can't rely on Lucas or Aquilani

I havnt seen much of Banega. I'd really like Cambiasso if we could get him. 15m plus Cambiasso would be a good bit of business. Use the 15m to get a back up striker.
Out-Insua, Riera, Yossi, Mascherano
In-Cole, Shelvey, Cambiasso, Jovanovic, Figueroa, Wilson and (eg) Bellamy.
I think that would represent a pretty amazing summer.

I think 15M and Cambiasso is a better deal for them than it is for us given the respective ages of the players.

I think the Balotelli money + cambiasso and I'll be happy ... or just give us Eto'o+Cambiasso ...
Maybe 20m then. I dunno. I just hope we don't come away rubbing our hands at the fee and then sign an inferior player than Cambiasso regardless of how much he costs. If a club want to buy our player and have a concept built replacement it just makes sense to factor that in.

There are reports linking us to Scott Parker if (when) Masch leaves.

15m + Eto'o.

Then use some of the 15m to buy Parker.

Sorted.

We'll probably get bum raped on the fee if we try and sign Parker.

Maschareno plus change for Scott Parker... *vomits*.

There's no way that Eto'o is going to join us. And even less in a part exchange deal.
Well we can dream.

Or we can just get as much money from Inter and buy Parker and an Eto'o-esque player.
