WTF - neither Miereles nor Shelvey are DMs. Unfortunately it has to be either Poulson or Lucas. Poulson may have had an inauspicious start but at least we know he is capable, let's give the lad a chance, he's only just arrived !

Exactly.

Poulsen needs to be playing alongside someone who's more attacking or we have the same predicament as last year where the DM is made to look worse than he actually is.

I dont think Kelly will start, Johnson will be at left full and either Babel or (god help us) Maxi at wide wight position, other than that I think thats the team to go for, Utd are feeble in the middle of the park and losing Valencia is a huge blow for them, plus now that Fergie has finally got a return from berbatov he doesnt seem to know what to do with Rooney, especially in his current state

Cole has the pace to do Neville and the skill to embarrass Fabio into making some pretty rash decisions so hes a definate for the left slot in my book, who ever ends up on the right will need to track Evra because he will charge forward all day long and this is likely to cause a problem for Johnson if he isnt getting enough support

That said I expect the Hodg to set this up for a 0-0 not push the fullbacks on, and try nick something through Torres who hopefully will not be wandering around with his sulky child demeanour

No one would ideally want to play Lucas, but going to Old Trafford without a DM is just asking for a tonking.

There is no problem using i.e. Meireles as a DM and accompany him with Cole and Gerrard central. It is all about football intelligence.

He is tiny, I was at a 21st over the water that he was at last weekend. He looks even smaller and slight in the flesh than when he is playing.

I think we sometimes get a bit too conditioned to "pigeon-holing" people. I am not having a pop at Poulson as he could be OK, it's too early to say, I think he looks quite competent and neat to be honest.
It does not have to be Poulsen because he is our only DM player Avvy. It might be that Miereles could play as well in that role purely from the perspective of the fact he is faster and more athletic, those two factors making up for his perceived lack of defensive thinking, while also giving us something extra offensively if the opportunity arose.
A DM has not always been a pre-requisite.

Lucas will likely play at OT.

He's been used in previous games against them, he's also featured in most; if not all games so far this season.

He wouldn't be my pick but both Benitez and Hodgson see something in him.

and sometimes for us that was Xabi Alosno, but that did not make him a specialist defensive midfielder, and sometimes he made a pretty good fist out of it.
I don't know enough about Miereles to say if he could or he couldn't, but I don't think it is logical to say that player "A" can't play in player "B's" position because he does not have that tag.

It is about keeping the ball. Both Meireles and Gerrard are more than able to win the ball but it is about what we do with it when we win it.

Last ggame United played Scholes, Fletcher and Oshea in their midfield. Gerrard, Cole and Meireles seem capable enough to deal with that?
