No one would ideally want to play Lucas, but going to Old Trafford without a DM is just asking for a tonking.
There is no problem using i.e. Meireles as a DM and accompany him with Cole and Gerrard central. It is all about football intelligence.
But thats the point,Meireles isnt a DM.

It has to be Poulsen.
It is about keeping the ball. Both Meireles and Gerrard are more than able to win the ball but it is about what we do with it when we win it.

Last ggame United played Scholes, Fletcher and Oshea in their midfield. Gerrard, Cole and Meireles seem capable enough to deal with that?
let's be honest here, roy strikes me a cautious manager so him playing gerrard AND meireles in the center of midfield seems a non starter at the best of times let alone against manu (AWAY!).

our best team has gerrard, meireles, cole and torres all starting. in our usual formation this either means cole in the hole or gerrard in the hole with cole on the left.

in games where we need to keep it tight i'd play cole in the hole and have a defensive midfielder next to meireles. only problem is of the two players we have that can allegedly do this one is shit and the other one looks like he'll be shit.

pooson is not dynamic enough to play this role in a fast league like ours.

i'd sell both cunt 1 and cunt 2 at xmas and put the money towards someone that can play this role.

pooson is nothing more than a nostalgic signing for grandpa.

Perhaps we should give Poulsen a chance with someone other than Lucas beside him. It's a bit hard to judge him too much when the player standing beside him is Lucas who isn't providing us with anything in an attacking sense.

I haven't been impressed with Poulsen so far in his short Liverpool career but perhaps we will see more of his abilities with a player of Meireles ilk beside him.

On a side note, Poulsen seems to have matured a little. I was the under the impression he would clatter into a few people and rough a few feathers but all he seems to do is jog around the centre circle without making any tackles of note.

Great, he's matured into a player who jogs about slowly doing fuck all.

How fortunate we are to see the peak years of this magnificent footballer

* win the ball
* pass it accurately to a team mate
* support the attackers when we have the ball
* support the defenders when the opposition have the ball

SO simple, yet poulsen and lucas seem utterly incapable of performing the above to a competent level.

He seems to be remarkably timid for a 'hard man'.
I know, I wasn't expecting him to be booked in every game but at least start a few rows or something to really stamp his mark on the team.

Nothing! Hopefully he'll give Paul Scholes a good kicking Sunday.

Perhaps KHL can chip in and provide us with some insight? I had him down as a bit of thug, (Poulsen not KHL) and it's a shame that he is gone all mellow on us. At least his ability to piss off opponents made up for his slow passing and crap hair.

I know, I think we got screwed in this transfer. Roy bought a player he knows well coming to the end of his career.

The Danish Pellebastard.

Just joking, that is very harsh on Poulsen.

*waves hissy fit in thug-like manner*

I believe Poulsen has becomed a more level-headed player over the past couple of years but I still believe will see a few thug-like moments however as I he's only getting his match fitness up whilst getting to know the EPL.

He has not looked liked himself completely so far however and he has a lot of improvement to do still but I'm not worried to be honest. For him nor my reputation on here.

He'll thrive in the DM role behind Gerrard and Meireles/Cole and he'll hopefully be an improvement passing-wise on Maher. It could eventually be the case that we'd be better to hold on to the ball than what we've been used to of late. This could indeed prove to be of good use at home against stubborn opposition. For all Mashers qualities he never added much in those kind of games.

Poulsen's preferred bottled water.

Poulsen's passing has been shocking so far.
Squiggs come on. No it hasn't. Not shocking.

He's made a few glaringly bad passes but he's made some rather nifty forward ones as well. I know he hasn't looked anywhere as good in that department as I've given you hopes of but it'll come in due time. Against United.

I know some posters on here has seen these few good passes as well and that they know there could be more positive to come from his foot. Passing-wise.

I've seen him gift possession away from a 5 yard pass, and his more 'adventurous' game seems to consist of punting it forward in the vague direction of a striker.

I think he's been shit so far.

The last bit I'm almost in agreement with. He's not been good.

We've only just started the Season and posters has gone from mad to absolute Cuckoo's Nest crazy in only few weeks. Let's give the new manager, the new players and the old ones too at least a few more games to get used to the new surroundings, tactics etc.

Poulsen isn't bad and he'll be much better with mobile players besides him. How do you reckon Hamann would've looked in our team against Birmingham? He would've suffered too had it been only his second game here.

To be honest I can't remember his debut games so I'd refrain from further arguing all I'm saying is that Hamann wasn't exactly the lightning-fast, creative nor particulary mobile defensive midfielder himself. He needed players around him with those attributes to really get going himself.

This isnt going to make sense no matter how many times you say it.

As Gene has said, if player can't improve a weak team it's because he's a weak player.

Hodgson has brought in 4 players; Cole, Konchesky, Meireles and Poulsen. (not sure aboutthe other youngsters)

Cole hasnt had much game time, admittedly..but of the 4 players only Poulsen looks to have not made any decent impression...I REALLY hope he picks up and proves himself, but it's not much good saying 'it's coz of Lucas'.

Can we agree that Masher has looked awfully inept alongside Lucas as well - particularly in our build-up play?

There are players who are of more use alongside better players than others. No matter how many times Gene or whomever has said otherwise.

Anyways if I remember correctly Hamann wasn't always exactly enjoying his best of games alongside Biscan et all. He was evidently much better alongside e.g. Gerrard.

PS I'm not saying it's Lucas fault at all all I'm saying is that we've fielded to many similiar players (slow, defensive-minded) to get going. If I'm not mistaken some of Lucas' least bad games came when played alongside Gerrard as his rolse was then somewhat more evident.

Masher did his specialised job though, and did it extremely well.

Poulsen hasn't done anything so far, so comparisons are stupid.

Why is hamann being brought in as a comparison?

Didi is probably one of our top 10 foreign players ever. I'm pretty sure poulsen will not be.

I'm not comparing them.

I'm just pointing out the 'obvious'. To many similar type of players will give you problems.

But you are, in a sense.

You defelct valid question marks about whether or not Poulsen is shit by saying it's because he's playing with shit players.

Then you ask how well Masher would play with Lucas.

Well, that's easily answered..just look at Morse's table.

I havent checked, but I'd wager he's been one of our best players for the past 2 years.

Playing with Lucas.

You can be as evasive as you like, but I just hope you're proven right about him.

Your constant moving of the goal-posts is curious though, Kris.

didi hamann? 'ANYONE' with the ability to pass five yards to a team mate would have looked world class in comparison to lucas and poulsen (I refuse to call them cunt 1 and cunt 2).

Many will disagree with you here KHL as Masher had other qualities that made him stand out even alongside Lucas. Pace, power, tackling, ability to cover every inch of the field etc. Poulsen is yet to show us anything of real note but I'm willing to give him time once partnered with an attack minded player. i.e not Lucas.

i wouldn't care if he was born in Liverpool, pooson is shit. he'll be gone on an undisclosed come next summer. we should never have bought him. he has not done 1 thing of note since he got here. above all he just looks so slow and off the pace, not in a lack of match fitness way but in a he'll never be upto speed sort of way. the move has come too late for him in his career

Regards Spearing playing as a DM, I've never thought much of him as a player, he's just 'ok', but he said last season that Rafa had him working with Masher alot to learn the same role as Benitez saw his future as being in that position. So he has at least trained to play the role, whether he's any good at it, well... Look at it this way, someone else is getting a shot at the 'Lucas' role, they might impress!
