We were getting a pacy, attack minded, English first choice right back who was regarded as one of the best in the league. The majority were thrilled with this signing. We weren't happy with that fee but we had no problems with Glen Johnson.

I like Johnson, he's one of my favourite players (some days), however, I agree with Avie, at a time when we were, and still are desperate, for a striker and player to play in the wider positions, £17million on a RB didn't make much sense. Even with Arbeloa going there must have been cheaper alternatives, who would probably be doing a better job than Johnson is right now, particularly defensively.

johnson was okay defensively when he first joined but for some reason he seems to have gone backwards recently.

johnson is a good right back. unfortunately we've tended to overlook his defensive weaknesses because of what he offers in attack. its just that recently he's been at best average going forward and his defending is no better.

is he worth 18 million? imo if you don't have the money to spare then no. i'd much rather have a solid back 4 that concedes very little in the style of houllier's late teams and rafa's early teams. i'd also rather have my creativity much further up the pitch.
