Is there much point handing managers 4 year contracts anymore? Seldom do they get near 4 years.

I had someone at work trying to convince me that Rodgers was building himself up for a fall with the challenge this season, I rubbished it off but would it really surprise you if we finished 5th and binned him off? It's sad to think but the margins are so fine now...


Fulham,norwich and Cardiff had 7 managers between them in 2013-2014 Season, it did FA all good for them, do managers need more protection or is it just the nature of the beast now cash is king in football?

It's the nature of the beast. The managers know what they're getting themselves into. They are paid handsomely for their venture. So, no pity or sympathy when they get the boot.

Rodgers and Martinez showed there's no need to be fatalistic about it. Someone like Hughton seemed to have a bunker mentality right from the start, was happy to bore the punters to death and also failed to appreciate that, at small clubs, the local media needs to be your best friend - charm the local hacks and you can earn so much breathing space, but alienate them and you're finished. Then there's Allardyce, who seems determined to write the text book on how to do everything wrong at a club except lose enough games to go down. What does he actually want to do each season, except not lose enough games to go down? He radiates negativity, and then wonders why he's so unpopular. So it's tough, but some managers have such a terrible attitude they bring a lot of it on themselves.

I think the length of contract thing has become silly. Rolling contract for the lot of them with an agreed severance if sacked.

If it's about money and pay-offs then that's easy. But if the question is about longevity, then they have to be much smarter than most of them are. The Midlands, for some reason, seems to be the worst - upset the local hacks there and you are finished. Look at Villa now - Lambert may well be a promising coach but they all hate him and he's doomed. What did Paisley say? 'Throw them some taffey'. That's all you need to do. When Clough went to Forest, he took the local hacks out and made them feel like they were his best buddies - it bought him time at both ends of his career. But you've also, eventually, got to do it on the pitch. People won't throw money at Pulis-style tactics indefinitely. Allardyce has got to build a team that will fill the new stadium - he's got no chance, and only Allardyce thinks taking the piss out of the existing fans is going to help.
