Man City (A) - post match

I bet Lovren has played in the majority of them. Before him, he was taking the piss out of Skrtel.

It was telling that Aguero kept himself away from Van Dijk and targeted Lovren.

It was some finish though. Even if Lovren is wank and should have done better. That was just sublime from the little cunt.

I’m m a big mane fan but this season he has been mixed, the biggest frustration is that he finds it so hard to control the ball and often our attacks break down. Other times he can take it on his chest and hit a half volley. Too unpredictable

City were the better side and deserved the win. I was disappointed with our performance... too cautious, too nervous and probably started with the wrong lineup.

We really missed a player who can receive the ball and carry it forward. Gini has been doing a bit of that for us this season but he couldn't quite make it happen last night.

City are a very good pressing team and they didn't show us any openings.

Still waiting for Keita to announce himself.

City's midfield is on a different level to ours and allows them to get away with a defense that's just above average at best.

It is not to say you are wrong, or argue … But why was City better? What did they do better?

We had the two clearances of the line. We had Equal possesion. We had the post out, they had the post in. What else did they do that we didn't?

They did to us what we were meant to do to them.

The crowd was up for it. They pressed like lunatics in the first ten minutes and dominated the early exchanges. We managed not to concede in that period, which is a improvement in itself from last year, however it certainly rattled us.

Milner didn't look match fit and wasn't good enough against. He shouldn't have started it. Lovren had his usual twice a year, scripted poor performance. Small mistake leading to a goal and then nervy and error prone afterwards.

Alisson and VVD deserve immense credit for keeping the scoreline respectable at times.

Once we weathered the storm it was a game of fine margins and we just came up a bit short. City deserved the win today. They haven't played better than that all season and we just didn't match it. The FA Cup becomes more important now. I don't care for the trophy, but we can't afford a second defeat on the bounce.

I'm over it now, we're still on top. Whats important for the team and Klopp now is to win the next match and not let this result mean anything more a couple of dropped points.

How the hell were City so much better as some of you put it, when they had to score two worldlies for the win?
I thought we were evenly matched. Their pressing was brutal for our defenders, but same can be said of our pressing.
On another day it would have gone better for us with the post hitting and clearances off the line falling in our favor.
It’s just one of those games where the best vs best face off and can go both ways. Just have to move on.

It was boss the way Robbo just laid down after 10 minutes clutching his face. That took their momentum away. We were not at the races up to then. After that we slowly started to get at them. No team has done that to city in years. We petrified them towards the end.

I was over it straight away. We are still ahead and it’s still in our hands.

Klopp talked about the red because he was asked. It was a red because pep cuntiola didn’t want to talk about it. Otherwise he’d have said that it was only a yellow.

Their keeper is fucking crap.

Because often the score doesn’t reflect the game.

It'll not happen if he's stuck on the bench in a game crying out for an attack-minded ball carrier. A shame he didn't start ahead of Henderson/Milner last night.

I can understand that he didn't start in this game based on prior form.
But he should deffo had come on before Sturridge.
When they were 2-1 up the game was screaming for someone to run at them.

Do you want to explain a little further? I’m not getting your point if you have one.

They dominated the play, pressed better, defended better, worked harder, created the better chances.

All in all they were superior to us over the 90 mins. I won’t argue with you if you don’t agree but for me it was very clear. I’ve just watch the whole game on LFC TV and city were much better.

We nearly nicked a great result but hey ho. We just gotta get back to battering everyone else

Our goal should be in the best team goal of the year discussion. We went to the temple of tiki-taka and showed them we can do it just as well:

It was a very good goal. Had Mane slotted his it would have been even better. The build up was beautiful.

That's going from Red Tinted Glasses to Blue Tinted Glasses.

They didn't dominate play as the stats prove. You can't dominate play with equal possession (and they needed those recoveries and press to equalise it), a virtually equal shot record (13-4 vs 12-5) and less clear cut chances (1 to 2) before we even get to the goal chances. They had a great press, I'll agree with that, but even then look at the stats to see how hard they had to work defensively :

Worked harder ? Only if you assume we made them work harder defensively (which in effect counters your claim) otherwise that's a rather spurious assertion.

Overall I also thought City shaded the game, and the result reflects that, however sometimes our bias interjects and obfuscates the facts (either negatively, in your case, or positively, usually in my case). Some people will claim the opposite, that stats don't always represent the reality, that may be true on occasion but most of the time it's not. In this case we were clearly not at our best, and I don't think City were either, but that's because the two teams were so closely matches they virtually cancelled each other out and the game was only decided by an individual moment of brilliance (Aguero) and some luck (Sane's deflected goal, Mane hitting the post and the goal line clearances).

No they were not superior to us over the 90 mins. The second half was ours for the most part - and yes they did hit us on the break but that was to be expected. I think thier period of dominance was actually the first half and that was it. In truth this is my take on the game:

  • They started the game in an aggressive manner which is not something that suites those players mentality, and under Pep I have not seen so many stray passes from them. Some people have praised Robertson going down and allowing them to cool down but I do wonder now if that was really the way to go - we should have just allowed them to pass it around like idiots in an angry manner which may have produced a break for us to counter.
  • The first goal they scored - the final product was world class but their build up was messy and fortunate if anything. Yes Lovren was caught unaware, but I dispute with you all about this targeting the right side because of Lovren. The left side was also targeted but Robertson was always in position to deal with it.
  • I also think that no - matter who we have in that defence - there would be no defender in world football who would be suspect if your midfield just cannot hold onto the ball and make simple passes to retain possession. Sustained pressure on the defence will lead to mistakes - ALWAYS happens.
  • We had them shitting themselves every time we got forward - have ever seen City defend like that under Pep ? - it was a new experience for them, at one point I was laughing watching a line of City defenders all on the goal line.
Nah - they were not that superior at all, but they had a load of uncontrolled aggression. But we all agree that Klopp sent the wrong side out and signal by sending out Henderson, and Milner - which basically says "Yeah we are going to defend and do fuck all going forward" - that midfield always means that and nothing else and only worked against a rattled Roma side last season at home - otherwise it has tasted defeat and draws against any classy opposition. You cannot blame the players (Henderson and Lovren) included for this defeat - the blame lies with Klopp for his initial selection, which basically said - we are going for a draw - our collective experience under Klopp is that we don't plan for drawing a game very well and it never works out for us.

City did not produce their usual intricate passing on a consistent level that night, it was all off sync due to nerves, and out of control aggression. They got lucky with that break for the second goal, and were lucky to hold on because when we bought on Fabinio - they all retreated into their half - the build up to our goal said it all. All I remember from them are the two goals they scored, Sterling's miss, and them defending like they have never done before under Pep.

Sadly, or perhaps in light of the result happily, I was on a 23 hr plane Journey and never saw the game apart from small youtube clips... That goal is sick.

Awesome. I counted 15 passes and crossing the pitch, virtually side to side, 5 times.

I Guess you missed a good game. It was two strong teams and even if we went through some frustrating patches we fought well and probably deserved a point at the end.

I am never the right man to judge our performances objectively but a few ManU (!!) fans stated it was the by far best game of the season..
