[article]Liverpool could choose to feel hard done by, with a body of evidence including one shot hitting the post, two being cleared off the line, an opponent perhaps deserving to be sent off, and a deflected winner. In a game of incredibly fine margins, they could not quite walk the tightrope.

But they will hopefully take a more introspective view, accepting that the right side of their defence is a weak spot that more opponents are targeting, and that their midfield offered neither enough protection in defence, nor any penetration in attack. To suggest this defeat was down to a lack of luck would mask genuine issues; they must improve on what was a solid but uninspired performance.[/article]

I'm obviously hurting, like we all are, and I may be being a bit kneejerk, but I think City win the league now. I need someone to convince me otherwise.

4 points is nothing over 17 games. Especially against a team as good as City. I think we have to have as good a second half of the season as the first. Or close to it. We might be capable, but City definitely are. Plus they've been here and done it before, we haven't and we have to shake this tag of bottlers. Will be tough.

Ratings:

Alisson - 6 ok... a bit nervy, and beaten at the near post. No chance on the 2nd.

TAA - 7 marshalled Sane well for the most part. Good crossfield ball.

Lovren 4 - our weakness exposed badly. No awareness for the 1st. Played Sterling on by a mile for the 2nd

Virgil - 7 assured

Robbo - 7.5 had Sterling in his pocket. Still hasn't come out. MOTM

Gini - 7 controlled the tempo

Hendo - 6 nothing wrong, just not a lot right either

Milner - 6 as Hendo

Salah - 6.. couldn't get beyond Laporte

Mane - 7 should be scoring in the one on ones.. but a constant menace

Firmino 7 some nice flicks and good finish.

I think to say Alisson should have done better is very harsh, the speed, and angle of the shot were ridiculously difficult to deal with, it wasn't straight at him or the side of him, it was above him, rising sharply.

I also think panning Lovren is fine, but Trent needs to take some of the blame too, both goals came from his and Lovren's side, with them having their way on that side of the box far too easily.

Numerous dangerous situations came from that area of the pitch.

I also think that last night proves that we need to be starting Fabinho against all the big teams, he is comfortably our best player in that position (DM).

Trent was left without much help on that right side given that we pushed Mane and then Salah further forward. After Lovren got that yellow card and made a few mistakes, his head went, as it usually does. He could have done much better for both goals.
You could see why we are missing Gomez big time. The agility, calm in possession and recovery speed was sorely missed.

Alisson couldn't have done much else for the goals. Thought he was very good bar that.

Fabinho should have started. He showed the same aggression and ability to control the play that Fernandinho was doing for City.

Bernardo Silva and Fernandinho were both brilliant.

In the end I think we can say we were a bit unlucky losing this game. The ball cleared of the line with 1,12 cm, the Mane post hit, Kompany's potential red card, two worldy goals and Edersons save at the end.

4 points makes this it more tough obviously but we knew that it would take almost a perfect season to win the league. 4 points clear in January after playing City twice and only having Utd away left of the top 6. I think every man and his dog would pay money to be in that position before the season started.

We got out run in the middle and they left limited gaps at the back to exploit. When we did get chances to break, we looked hesitant and didn't take many of them. However, close game and it took City to raise their game significantly to get that win.

What we found out last season was that a midfield 3 of Hendo, Gini & Milner was effective only if they were on top fitness (out running the oppo) combined with us outscoring the opposition. We got out run today and it was left wanting. The new shape of 4-2-3-1 needs to be the default in big games now too.

Alisson's save at the end from Aguero - almost as good as a goal.

Long break until our next run of PL games - let's make a statement against Brighton.

I truly believe this is on Klopp. Had we started with Fabinho + Gini in the double pivot with whomever ahead of them and we don't lose this, IMHO of course. There was a clear improvement when Fabs came on and some will say it was because City had gone into defensive mode (rather than what I saw - a general improvement in our game) however their subs were all like for like (Jesus for Aguero, Gundogan for Silva - both attacking mids, and Otamendi for Kompany for the last 5 mins) and Guardiola didn't try to put up the shutters with defensive subs.

Guardiola won this tactically by virtually ignoring CM in our half and attacking our right side time after time with numbers. No one saw that coming. Oh.

Alisson - 7 - no chance on either goal. Made one excellent save at the feet of Aguero to save a certain goal.

TAA - 7 - was really up against it vs. Sane, Aguero and both Silvas targetting that side. No surprise then that both goals came from that quarter. I mostly don't put any blame on him though as he was out-numbered. Thought he did very well in midfield bar one brain fart when Salah and Firmino were legging it upfield and he instead chose to cross to Mane behind the play. Very frustratingly he continues to chip balls too long. Superb cross for our goal.

Lovren 3 - Just watch the game, brainless. Fuck me. We really really missed Gomez.

Virgil - 8 - Absolutely nothing went past him. A complete Collusus.

Robbo - 8 - Was Sterling even on the pitch for most of the game ? Owned. Lovely one touch pass for the assist. Crosses hit and miss.

Gini - 6 - struggled to impose himself on the game and was partly responsible for the disconnect of midfield-forwards.

Hendo - 5 - Mr Boring. Maybe with a double pivot he could have played ahead of them and been more influential, as he was vs. Arsenal, but mainly he was a lamp post who had zero influence on the game. Blame is on Klopp though.

Milner - 5 - He should have been played at RM but looked off key today.

Salah - 7 - I thought he did a fine job occupying both Kompany and Laporte (who virtually didn't get beyond HW) and when dropping deeper to pick up the ball and run at them I always thought something may happen. Kompany only kept him from 1 on 1 with a Red Card tackle.

Mane - 5 - no lack of effort but his touch and goal scoring are way off. it was the right decision to hook him.

Firmino 6 - just didn't get into the game as he should do due to the simply awesome performance of Fernandinho who occupied his space.

Subs
Fabinho - 7 - if only he'd started.
Shaqiri - 7 - if only he'd started
Studge - 5 - irrelevant, though that's a little harsh as he had no time at all to influence the game.

In amongst a smattering of FA Cup and Carabao Cup games, City's next PL games are:
  • Wolves (H)
  • Huddersfield (A)
  • Newcastle (A)
  • Arsenal (H)
  • Chelsea (H)
I think we can assume they will win the first three of those so we just need to match and then hope for a blip as Arsenal & Chelsea pay them a visit.

I'm worried that a 4 point buffer won't be enough, especially with Sane on top form, Aguero & Fernandinho back in the team and KDB to return. However we have seen that their defence is fragile and they have struggled to get themselves fired up for games. Let's hope that one of Huddersfield or Newcastle can successfully park the bus.

Pre Match

THE problem with a free hit is you have got to land the fucker well.
I mean, when you think about it, who in their right mind is offering up a free crack? Juice heads and fellas with necks like chimney stacks, that’s who. No one gets to waft a dig at these big bastards and not regret it. Think about every film you have ever seen where the baddy offers up the first hit for nothing. Nine times out of 10 the fuckers start laughing like they are made out of the same gear as Jon Otsemobor’s arse.
The Reds have got a free hit have they, yer? Sound. Redmen, jump out of that ring a minute, grab that randomly placed metal chair, and crack these fuckers right over their scruffy, fucking cagoule-shagging, rain-loving heads, and don’t stop till you see lots of grown men and women crying with joy.
Days like today are mad days, aren’t they? I’ve spent the day lurching from a position of admirable calm, serene confidence and general soundness, to one of sheer panic-induced mania. Like my head is on a metronome and as it ticks left it is the head of a dog riding in the passenger seat of a lovely car with his massive tongue out having an absolute ball, might even have shades on, somewhere like Santa Monica, getting driven by The Rock.
But, uh oh, what’s that? The metronome is launching right, I’m now one of them unfortunate souls who feels sick on a train and sticks their head out the window for some fresh air, only to be met by one of them Japanese bullet fellas going full pelt the other way.
Heavy.
Alisson: 8
Fuck all to do except play a bit of footy and then pick one out. Not a great deal he can do with that one. He fucking lashes it in. Makes two great saves second half. Passed to Degsi too much, which done no one any favours.
Trent: 7
Like all The Reds, played well first half and didn’t deserve to be one down. Use of the ball was great bar one sloppy one first half. I’m not sure you will ever see a better ball with his wrong foot for the goal, mate. Absolutely means that, greatest ball you have ever seen.
Degsi: 5
Yellow card to mark his greatest contribution as a Liverpool player. Gets legged a few times but in fairness, their tricky lads are boss. You could say he was on his heels for their goal first half, but fucking hell that would be a bit on the harsh side. He’s no Virgil. Not a great deal you can do sometimes aside from doff the auld cap.
Unfortunately, second half, they exploited his weaknesses. Mainly his mind. He was wild there, capped off with that ball to Virgil last minute. Hopefully Virgil is hitting him repeatedly in the grid with his boot as we speak.
Only messing, Big Dog.
Virgil: 7
Great block at 0-0. Didn’t deserve to be getting beat. Pretty similar second half. Reckon he is in his trying to make a potion of Virgil’s marvellous medicine for big Joey Gomez’s leg. Missing him like fuck.
Robbo: 8
For a fella whose bird has been in the longest labour ever, he was spot on first half. I was a shambles when my bird was in labour. Ran out the house with no jumper or coat, and me bird had the fucking window open all night, the selfish fucker. Was frozen fucking stiff, lad. Great run and cracking ball for the goal. Didn’t deserve to be on the losing team.
Hendo: 7
Played well. Front foot, broke it up. Fine lines, lads.
Milner: 6
Played well while he was on, as they all did. But looked knackered, there. The right change, really.
Gini: 7
Shows some balls to keep the ball in the positions he ends up in, with three fellas legging him.
Sadio: 7
Absolute hard lines with that effort first half. Does everything right. I don’t know how that isn’t a goal. I don’t think anyone does. How the fucking hell does that go through Salah’s legs. Seriously. Every now and again, you get one of them. We could have played for a year there and wouldn’t have got the rub of the green.
Mo Salah: 6
Really unlucky for the one across the keeper. Great save. Didn’t get much out of them, but then they had about six fellas marking him.
Firmino: 7
Thought he was really good all the way through. Linked it well, held his shape, worked hard, a threat, gets the goal.
SUBS
Fabinho:
Did well when he come in. Great change by the manager. Don’t agree with the inevitable cryarsing that says he should have started. Think our shape, tactics and selection were pretty much spot on. That was a coin toss, mate.
Shaq and Sturridge:
Tried to have a go.

I fully agree about the double pivot @Frogfish but I think this game was so close.. if Mane's had gone post and in and Sane's post and out, I think lots would say that Klopp got it right.
That is true and the stats show we gave as good as we got bar that one goal that simply wouldn't go in for us. However my point is that we could have been even better with the double pivot and Fabs starting, even if Hendo was still in the team. We may even have won it, however it's too late now, we'll never know, but let's just hope this isn't the defining match of the season otherwise we'll be looking back at this one with deep regret.

Agreed. This was an opportunity to really go at them and fight for that 10 point lead. Our game plan essentially seems to be: sit back, concede, attack & score, sit back, concede. We have to just hope that the City blip continues over the next 5-7 games, allowing us to preserve this lead.

We have shown we are better than every other side so losing to City is irrelevant as long as we keep up the level we have all season.

No injuries and it’s ours.

City will drop points as will we but I think we have the easier run with less big games and we have shown we are ruthless against the bottom 14.

A bit of perspective from one of the better United posters on RedCafe :

PL champions lose very few games, and the games they do lose tend to be exactly like that - tense, tight affairs against their closest opposition. In Chelsea's first title-winning season under Mourinho, they lost only one game but drew twice against 2nd placed Arsenal. In 07/08 we lost against Chelsea in the 3rd last game of the season, finishing just 2 pts ahead of them in the end. In City's 2nd title they lost against Liverpool in April and finished just 2 points ahead in the end.

City were the favourites to win the game, and yet Liverpool remain the favourites to win the league after that loss. So PL champions are expected to lose games like that, once in a while.

And another :

I don't think Ive ever seen a team make City look that nervy.

I felt sorry for Trent. Too often, the predictable 'to you, to me' faffing around at the back ended up in him being given the ball where there were at least two opponents in front of him and his only option was to try to squeeze the ball past them and find a teammate he couldn't even see. It was the kind of stupid, repetitive mistake I'd hoped we'd grown out of.

I mean we would have got humped a season ago. Look how close we are to them.

Pep will be crying in a closet for the next week, wanking over Catalan knits, and trying to figure out how he is meant to win more games like this.

We will lose to United for sure, but that may well be it. For them, the champions league is the priority, and it could well bite for a 34 yo Fernandinho. We're still the underdogs, and playing that way will help.

I'd play full strength ish v Wolves now

For me it is even more important to give a few players some time off for Wolves - not even in the squad, but let them refocus for the next run of PL games. VVD, Robbo, Gini, Mane all look like they need a rest. Salah & Firm are in form, but could maybe do with reduced minutes.

Aye, I mean I wouldn't change the 11. I think a win is very important for momentum now. Defo rest the defense

Unless he plays none of them and just sends the kids out, so he can pretend its none of them.

It sounded like the away supporters were in the game and dominated the stands to the very end. Thats ace.

We were not outplayed by City, we had our moments and they had their. We hit the post and so did they. We had to clearances of the line. Same number of passes but we had more on their half than they on our half. We didn't run riot as we have done sometimes but they were up for a fight and got those inches on their side yesterday. Overall we had a brilliant festive period and we need to build on that.

I can't be arsed to start a blaming game. We know who we have and had Karius let in that first goal we had all been murdering him. But we are lucky to have a rock solid squad ready to win the title. So I'll back them all the way!!

The first half of this season shows we are definitely capable.

I think its perfectly okay to mention it after the game. It was a challenge that we've seen players sent off for earlier in the season.
If it hadnt been City and a high profile match, I bet the ref would have looked at it differently. Which is a shame.
But thats history now, we've moved on.

Aguero scored in his 7th straight home league match against us, fucking hell.

I bet Lovren has played in the majority of them. Before him, he was taking the piss out of Skrtel.

It was telling that Aguero kept himself away from Van Dijk and targeted Lovren.

Going back to work.. to be reminded that Lovren said we could go unbeaten.

Yet he's one of the main reasons why we lost.

Fucking hate the bellquiff more than I hate Hendo.
