Mali's ex-Liverpool and Juventus star Momo Sissoko retires

[article]Former Liverpool and Juventus midfielder Momo Sissoko has announced his retirement from football.

The ex-Mali international, who turns 35 on January 22, last played in the French second-tier for Sochaux last season.

"If I am here this evening, it is to tell you that it is the end for me," Sissoko told French television channel RMC Sport.

"I stop my career. It is a decision really difficult to take and to say."

Sissoko featured for 14 clubs including European sides Liverpool, Valencia, PSG, Juventus, Fiorentina and Livante and won seven trophies.

During his time with Valencia he won a La liga title, the European Super Cup as well as the now-defunct Uefa Cup.

That success led to a move to English Premier League side Liverpool in 2005 where he won another European Super Cup and the FA Cup.

After falling out of favour with then Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez he moved to Italian giants Juventus.

The France-born player's first professional French club was was Paris Saint-Germain, where he won the Ligue 1 title.

Following his release by PSG in 2013 his club career became somewhat nomadic with a spell back in Spain at Levante, before moving to Asia where he played for Chinese outfit Shanghai Shenhua and Indian club Pune City.

He then returned to Europe and the Italian second-tier as he signed for Ternana, where he spent just three weeks before going back to Asia and Indonesian side Mitra Kukar.

His journey then took him to central America and a stint at Mexican club Atletico San Luis in 2017.

Sissoko's final two clubs were Kitchee in Hong Kong and then finally a short time at French side Sochaux, who he signed a six-month deal with in January last year.

He was born in France but committed his international future to his country of origin Mali and made his debut for the Eagles in 2004.

Sissoko made 34 appearances for Mali scoring two goals, and he helped the Eagles to a third place finish at the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations.

In all he played at four Africa Cup of Nations finals - 2004, 2008, 2010 and 2013.[/article]

I think it was an eye injury that effectively ended his time at Liverpool, and probably reduced his impact elsewhere. There were a couple of seasons when he was an excellent (bordering on outstanding) player. So much presence in center mid - part of "the best midfield in the world" with Gerrard, Alonso, Mascherano.
He won us the 2006 FA Cup final as much as Gerrard did. As players were dropping from exhaustion - I think we had 2-3 limited by cramp for the last 30+ minutes - Momo was still charging around, winning possession, a midfield colossus.
The eye injury was serious enough that there were fears he would lose it, and certainly his vision was limited by it afterwards. A big loss to LFC.

They got a late goal in that game to make it 1-1 if I remember right and it was so undeserved. Momo absolutely bossed it.

There was some unforgettable performances where he just dominated the opposition. Sissoko's presence allowed Gerrard to roam, do his thing, and not give a fuck about defensive shape, because Momo was at the back, holding it all together and bailing us out.

He lost his way after the eye injury and never really got back to his best, however there's a reason why he was included in the best midfield in the world song. Deserves to be remember fondly.

Memories are vague on that one - though just saw some highlights - great shot against the bar - would have doubled his career total of goals for us! But he was only 22-23 when he left Liverpool, and had been stepping up to another level when he got the injury. Such a shame for us and him that his potential was so badly hampered.
Who knows how good he would have been, but I recall being sickened at the injury and the knowledge of the impact it would have.

Would it be fair to say that his role in that midfield was similar to what Gini does for us? He seemed to run more than Gini does though, if my memory serves me right,

Momo was immense, when he was in his element. You could see the fear in opponents eyes that they were in for a brutal time. I reckon they probably put on extra shin pads.

When Momo bossed the midfield and rip opponents apart it was simply incredulous and a sight to behold.
