Whether you rate Kelly or not, there is no way we could rely on him for a season because he is just too injury prone. Unless you have amazing faith in Flanagan then we will need to replace Johnson.

Flanagan, Kelly, Carragher as a last resort, between those we have more than enough to cover. And lets face it, Johnson isn't exactly fit the whole time either.

This is a big point, this Flanagan will become our right back with time I believe, if he's ready for prolonged time next season or not is a hard question though, probably worth the risk though. Getting 16.5million for Johnson would be a fantastic sell considering he's probably at the peak of his value and it's one of our stronger positions, I am a huge fan of Johnson though, he's one of our truly classy players, I think this would be easier for me to swallow if they took a million off of the price and chucked Arbeloa in there too, just for a little more short term cover.

If i had the confidence we'd replace him well i'd be up for it, but we'll sign Pascal Chimbonda or someone.

McLauglin will be our first choice RB in two years time. Flanagan wont stand a chance.
He's that good.

Tbf, given Kelly's injuries, we probably could do with short-term cover for the 2-3 years it'll take for Flanagan and McLaughlin to take over (or prove they're not up to it), but I'd have thought a solid 30+ yr old rb could be brought in to do that job just from Johnson's wages, leaving the transfer fee free for more pressing problems in the side.

IMO there's no doubt that we're going to have to be particularly clever and resourceful if we're going to make real progress in the market in the short-term, and I think this is a real opportunity to do so.

will he be as good as cahill? 😉
I don't understand the criticism he's getting. Maybe being an England international (starter even) and playing for England isn't enough to prove that he's good?
He's scoring as well.
A lot of shit was said about him when he was playing for Bolton but he hasn't exactly shamed himself at Chelsea, and they got him cheaply. That was the main reason I wanted us to buy him.

Lordy that McLaughlin looks quick.

*cue hamstring problems and a 200 grand transfer to Grimsby*

I think it was only a few months ago that I listed him as a player with a good chance of making it and you more or less dismissed the idea!

To answer the other poster, I think he plays a bit for the 18s and a bit for the reserves - he was involved in the next gen games as well. He's 17 and has already been called up to Northern Ireland's u21 squad. He has every chance.

WHAT!!! I never said such a thing. I've rated him from the start, saw him play an Irish schoolboy game where he scored two goals (EDIT). Been excited ever since.

Could have though you meant someone else. I really don't recall that.

didn't know the name but definately recognise him from the video, fantastic pace, not afraid to tackle and get up and down the pitch all day. I don't know if I'd go overboard like modo is but he's definately a talent.

Possibly you meant someone else then, but pretty sure you said it. I'm going to have to try to find it now!

I'm ready to put my right testicle on the line for this kid. He's very very good. I even bet GkMacca would back me up here.

Irish Red (can't remember if there is a hyphen or not because there is two of them, the Northern Irish one) was raving about him on here when we originally signed him. Think he played with / against him.

ok Modo, i found it, and i'm sort of half-right. you said 'he's very quick but i haven't been that impressed tbh', and that was 2.5 months ago.

Lads, GLENJO is very dispensible, We all know that, Sell and replace with one of the young lads coming through. Cha-ching. Downing mistake erased. NEXT!

Mourinho didn't rate him at Chelsea he played Ferreira and Geremi in front of him, loaned him out to Portsmouth and then sold him. I would be suprised if he was interested in him now.
