Think neil is slating kellys ability to defend johnson.

I'm not slating kelly I just think he is more of a centre back than a fullback and our ability to attack from this area of the pitch is vital seeing as we haven't had a winger worth a shit in 20 years.

Both players have skill and power.

Johnson, just skill which he likes to use sporadically

We have Kelly, Coates and Flanagan, not to mention McLaughlin who could come through too. We're overstocked defensively, and we need the money, so we should sell.

I do agree we need to ship out some duds in other areas of the squad, but we don't actually have any ready made replacements for them.

Agreed.

If (IF) we need to sell players to fund signings then it seems rather silly to expect to be able to sell players we don't think are good enough and expect to be able to replace them with better players for less money.

I have nothing against Johnson. He is a decent player on his day, but if we sold him we would not need to buy another full back because we already have a few of them waiting in line.

do you know how many outfield players I rate (not including defense)? 4. maybe we should concentrate on selling players who simply can't be relied on to create or finish chances rather than pick at the one area of our team that is any good.

For sale: Player who simply cannot be relied upon to create or finish any chances. Any very large offer considered, as money needed to fund one who can.

Yeah, I can see loads of teams getting straight on the phone to snap up that deal

if we put up carroll and downing and adam up for sale we'd get takers, sure, they'd try to drive down the price but we could definately sell them.

So we take a hit in a position where we need players to keep a player in a position where we have very capable replacements.

We have 3 strikers, and 2 wingers. You'd rather we sell one from both of them rather than a rb? Who we have 3 of.

I wouldn't sell. He's a good player, would fit in perfectly at Madrid too.

Plus, we have no other right backs - Kelly ain't one I'm afraid - and Dalglish would only blow the money on some chump.

An absolute no-brainer, sell sell sell.

IMO we're not going to be challenging for the league for another 4 years or so, so anyone in his age bracket we should be open to offers for to fund bids for top quality young talent. That he's on very high wages, isn't that great a defender, is injury-prone, and we already have 3 very good prospects to cover his position, just make the decision all the more no-brainier.

Kelly is fine as a RB - he's better defensively than GlenJo and has been fine attacking too. Also, who cares how he fits in at Madrid?

Based on your comment re: Daglish, it seems you'd be happy to accept the fee if it was a manager you trusted to bring in a Suarez like player.

I do but I want to hold onto the ones we already possess. you guys seem to think we can't move on kenny's signings, I disagree, there is ALWAYS a market for average workmanlike cloggers.

We can move them on.

But if it's a choice between selling Johnson and putting all that money on an attacking player, or selling four players and trying to buy four more for the same we got in, which in my opinion would probably mean four players of the same standard.
We could sell Downing and Johnson and have about 30m there to spend on just one player, as Johnson does not need to be replaced. Unfortunately all our dead wood(if that's not too harsh) will have to be replaced with someone.

I don't mind getting rid of some of the cloggers ... I also think GlenJo can be moved on - and I think we have an able replacement for a few years, until he moves to CB ...

I see it as selling two outfield players and buying one outfield player of quality. the quality will improve but the depth will take a hit, any injuries and we call on the reserves. I think selling our good players is a recipe for disaster and despite what some forum members would have you believe johnson IS one of our better players hense why real are in for him rather than utter mediocrity in attacking positions.

I reckon 16.5m overvalues him by about 16m. If I knew that they were going to spend the proceeds on someone good I'd bite their hands off.

Johnson does not need to be replaced.

Whether you rate Kelly or not, there is no way we could rely on him for a season because he is just too injury prone. Unless you have amazing faith in Flanagan then we will need to replace Johnson.
