I think we can count the good players we have on one hand if we sell them even for what seems like good fees then I am writting off next season because I have ZERO confidence in managements ability to pick up good players.
it's our DUTY to build on the few good players we have rather than selling them in the gamble that we can replace them cheaply (well, not cheaply) with the money we make, because that has worked out so well for us in the past.
I doubt you liked him, he's not black and awful defensively.
Spidey you said yourself yesterday you don't see us having much to spend this summer, which is most likely correct, how the fuck do we build with no money ?
by selling the players we bought in the summer who have contributed next to nothing in the league.
Spidey we can't magically sell things that nobody values.
It all depends if he really wants to go, I wouldn't be one for making an unhappy player stay. If he's his heart set on Spain and they're offering for 16.5m, I'd hold out for 20m and use the cash to strengthen centre midfield.
downing - 12m
carroll - 15m
adam - 5m
henderson - 8m
the wage bill has been greatly reduced so you'd assume that if the yanks simply give us what we've earnt we're looking at 25-30m. sell the players on the fringe and the utter duds of the summer (if we're able to) and that gives us a healthy budget for the summer.
if the yanks aren't going to dip into their pocket then they can't expect us to compete with the elite.
he does, but I don't think he does it as well as johnson.
Or sell the worst finisher in the Premier League for 35m+
and one of the worst defenders in the Premier League for 16.5m
We keep our squad depth and have 50m to improve the first team.
There's also the fact that we'd end up paying some of the contracts for the likes of Downing (who was worth about 12m when we signed him and only played good games against Championship sides since) and Carroll.
So if he does, and with game time, he'll get much better - why not play him? Ok, so he won't attack as well - and may never will, but he'll do a good enough job AND he'll be a far more stable defender. Would you rather we keep Kelly on the bench for 3-4 years and then move GlenJo on for 5-7 million? Or let Kelly develop into the player he can be?
Neil, Rosco's clearly trolling you, why're you biting?
Why? He's not needed there with Agger and Skrtel who are young for centre backs and who can be our defensive pairing for years.I'll give Kelly one thing I think he has over Johnson going forward, and that is that I think he's a better crosser of the ball. Really though i'd like to see Kellys development heading towards centre back.

I want kelly to develop into the player he can be at centre back.
We have Kelly, Coates and Flanagan, not to mention McLaughlin who could come through too. We're overstocked defensively, and we need the money, so we should sell.
I do agree we need to ship out some duds in other areas of the squad, but we don't actually have any ready made replacements for them.
I do like Johnson and wanted him here long before we paid £17M to bring him in, but I think it's a good idea to sell.
He hasn't quite developed into the player I hoped he would and selling him would make sense providing the money went on a decent striker or attacking option. Also Flannigan and Kelly look on their way to becoming decent Premiership players so it shouldn't impact upon us too much.
My only worry is Kenny Dalglish and Comolli will spend the £16.5M onLee Cattermole(Stephen Fletcher), in which case it would be a fucking disaster.
