It's just a snippet from a rumours page on the Guardian ....

Even so is there anyone here that wouldn't take that offer ?

me.
he is one of the few good players we have. how the fuck are we expected to get back to where we feel we belong if we keep fucking off our good players because it's a good deal financially?

We need to buy a few world class players this summer (2, preferably 3).

16.5 is a great fee.

I think the other snippets of losing Kuyt & Maxi are problematic ... We're weakening squad depth (unless that's where Downing, Carroll etc will be next year)

I think we should try to hold onto all our defenders and sell outfield players to raise cash. the defense is argubly the only decent thing we have.

Sell.
I really like Johnson but I think he could be sacrificed in order to solve other problem areas.

with every decent player that is pushed out the door I become more and more disillusioned with this club as I'm asked to cheer on utter fucking mediocity but it doesn't matter because at least we're balancing the books.

Considering we've got Kelly and Flanagan, and I don't rate Magic, this is a no brainer for me.

If you could put a value on how many goals Johnson is worth to the team every season, I'm absolutely certain it would be a minus figure every single season despite how good he looks at times.

Yeah I wish we'd kept Nando too

it isn't about the goals it's about his ability to carry the ball quickly up the pitch, he ability to stretch teams by making decoy runs and overlapping runs. we are more of a threat when he is in the team no question about. it's getting to the stage where I can count on one hand the players in the entire squad that I rate. as for kelly he stikes me as more of a center back than a fullback.

He'll be 28 in August - he's got at least 4 years left at the top, but it's probably the last time we'd have a really good chance to get a really big sum for him. He's also made no secret about wanting to play in Spain and has been learning the language for the past two years. And we've got decent cover for that position, so it makes sense.

year on year we are releasing players with ability on the ball until eventually we are going to end up with a team of hardworking cloggers.

Does Kelly not make overlapping runs? Or decoy runs? What was he doing in the Everton game exactly? Is he a better defender than Kelly? It's the best time to move GlenJo on ... 16.5 million is a fantastic sum for a 28 year old defender who we can replace without losing too much for free.

Depends how much money we have really

Fact is that we are going to seriously need to spend on other areas. If we can do that whilst keeping the luxury of having a number a decent full backs then great, but if we need to raise money then this (or whatever we can end up negotiating above this amount ideally!) would be almost impossible to turn down I think.

Spidey we've never finished in the top four since Johnson joined us. Not all his fault, but it's not a complete coincidence either.

There is no point in hanging onto ageing expensive players, who have shown you they aren't capable of being part of a contending squad, particularly if there's a ridiculous bid on the table.

he does, but I don't think he does it as well as johnson.

no one is going to convince me it's a good idea to get rid of johnson, not when I think the squad is filled with mediocrity and players who want to pass the buck rather than have faith that their ability can take on a player. it's like a fucking nightmare, I started supporting liverpool when barnes was in his pomp where the team had ability and skill and now I have to watch players who week after week put in performances that would be more at home at aston fucking villa.

why stop at johnson, I think if we sell suarez we can fetch at least 30+ m and that would enable us to buy at least 3 players.

Yup, if someone wants to overvalue our players it's our duty to make those teams look stupid. Like we did with Chelsea.

It's also our duty not to let others make us look stupid when buying from them. Which we haven't quite managed yet

that's a bit revisionist, you certainly didn't rate arbeloa when he was here.

From day one I said I would have preferred to keep Arbeloa (and develop Kelly) and not waste money on Johnson, so it's hardly revisionist.

If we have to sell to buy, I would say sell.

I think Johnson, Agger, Skrtel, Enrique is out best defensive unit, but it doesnt worry me if Kelly has to come in for an injured Johnson. Having said that Kelly does get a lot of injuries too.

it's our DUTY to build on the few good players we have rather than selling them in the gamble that we can replace them cheaply (well, not cheaply) with the money we make, because that has worked out so well for us in the past.

I was one of the few arbeloa fans on this board so to hear arbeloa is missed is hilarious.
