The bottom line for me is that he looked quite good on the ball, beat players at times and was part of some decent team movements. This is all I want from him really for the moment.

its simply a matter of time before he lets you down

Haha, probably.

Going overboard a bit here maybe? You don't judge a Liverpool CM by how much he's improved but by how much influence he has on the game.

Good solid game from him (and for the past couple of games as well), but don't tell me he 'deserves' to be in the starting XI. He had about as much influence on the game as an average Gerrard and Meireles today and it speaks volumes about your calibre if your influence isn't particularly great even on your best days.

He's a always been a hardworking lad and it's nice to see him improve. But deserving a place in the Liverpool central midfield - no chance.

can't agree. I want from a CM
* someone who can consistantly win the ball
* protect the defense
* give the ball easy to players with the ability to hurt teams
* move forwards to support the attacking players when we have possesion of the ball

lucas has been doing the above and as such deserves to be in the liverpool midfield. will he be able to keep up this level of consistancy is another matter entirely.

Fuck off anyone that didn't think Lucas was good (Great) Today! Played his socks off and second only to Torres was MOTM. Great performance. By the way i'm as surprised as anyone but credit where is due. 8)

Why should we want someone in CM who can "give the ball easy to players with the ability to hurt teams"? Why can't the CM be that person?

so be in two places at one time?

I thought you meant Lucas can give it easy to Gerrard (for example) as he can do something good, rather than Lucas doing the something good himself.

Lucas plays the deepest in the midfield hence why he's not in a position to 'hurt teams' offensively. He hurt Chelsea by bossing the middle with Gerrard and forcing the Chelsea attacks out wide and he still moved over to assist in wider positions. He also passed the ball forwards at every opportunity. Apparently he's been doing the business for the Brazil national team too.

Probable, but not certain.

I'm in danger of agreeing with you.

Two things:
1. Lucas was great today, only an utter cunt ( 😉) would disagree.
2. He still has a lot of work to do before I am convinced he should be an automatic starter. A few good games doesnt wipe out the years of shit that went before them.
This is utter crap.
He (and Gerrard) bossed the middle of the park leading to Chelsea abandoning the centre totally. We won the game in the middle of the park today (then almost lost it on the flanks) and Lucas was as important in that as anybody. Is THAT not influential?
Dont bother with an answer btw, i dont really care to debate it.

No, he's been a fucking cunt for three years.

And has played as many shit games as good games this season. So while he was all right today, he was worse than shit against Everton.

He's nowhere near good enough, and two OK games don't change that.

I know this doesn't take a genius but I'll be magnanimous:

Lucas + Poulsen -> Lucas is shite
Lucas + The Dwarf -> Lucas is shite

Lucas + Gerrard -> Lucas is 'excellent'

So when Lucas is playing next to the best Central Midfielder in the world, his play improves because ...

well, quite.

He still shouldn't be in our team, though.

Brendan, you're the lone voice of dissent on this one!

I don't think I am.

But just so we're clear: he's not a very good player.

I thought Lucas was excellent today with his constant chasing and tackling.

Its pretty obvious that he is a better player in 2010 than he was in 2009. Lets hope a new manager can bring more out of him. His heart and effort should be commended today.

Lucas had a great game today, and if he carries on those performances he definitely deserves a place in the team. However, there have been many false dawns and so he has a lot of proving to do. Plus, he's not at the level of a Mascherano or Alonso, and if we can get that calibre of player in, then we should.

Thought he looked fucked towards the end but he'd done a lot of hard work.

No one's saying he's brilliant or he's suddenly become a good player overnight, his performance and his recent form is just being acknowledged that's all. I doubt it changes peoples overall views, but at least most aren't being stubborn in their opinions and are willing to give credit where it's due.
Seriously. Whats the point.

I thought he was excellent again today. He never stopped harrying, and I'd be surprised if he didn't put in more tackles than any player on the pitch. His passing was good too. This was one of Lucas's best days in a red shirt. More of the same please.

He was utterly, utterly, excellent today.

Debate whether he is the long term (or even medium term) solution or not some other time, just give him the credit where it is due....

This was Lucas' best display ever in a Red shirt.

Poulsen suddenly thinks he made a mistake signing for us. Can't see him getting anywhere near the first team again!

i heart lucas today

tomorrow will be back to faint optimism

Hopefully we can add a "yet" to the end of that sentence Brendan. He was good today, has shown decent form in the past few games. Based on the entire time he's been here, not quite there yet, but he's headed in the right direction.
