i'm gonna come out and say it..

We should cash in on Torres, Gerrard, Mascherano, Lucas and Babel.

Fresh start with a new manager at the helm.

Gerrard is getting older-- we can still get shitloads for him-- He deserves the move he wants and i cannot handle seeing him sulk again next year--

Torres on form is EASILY the best striker in the world. However, his fitness levels are a concern and he has come out and stated that he doesnt think he can last long in the premiership. If a 70 million offer comes in we would be stupid not to accept.

Mascherano in my eyes is amazing.. however i dont think anything can be done to keep him here. His wife is lazy prick tho.

Lucas- Well, not good enough. Some italian club.. like Sampdoria would like him. 7 mil

Babel - I hate his attitude. Not what the club needs.

So we sell our entire central midfield and our only decent striker in one summer?

That'd leave us struggling in the bottom of the table.

We can't sell our best players and replace them like for like easily.

That's actually one reason why we replaced the manager.

This would decimate team morale and leave us with little to no leadership. It would also be completely demoralizing for the supporters, and signal to the entire footballing world that we are adrift. We need a smart consolidation right now, get rid of the right players, and bring in a couple intelligent buys. Nothing radical, the club can't handle it. The time for a wholesale change will be when new owners come in.

We will likely require to replace Mascherano, and perhaps others as well anyway, without bringing it on ourselves.

How?

If we sold that lot, our squad would be left looking like this:

Reina, Cavalieri
Johnson, Degen
Insua
Carra, Agger, Skrtel, Zorba
Aquilani
Yossi, Riera, Maxi, Jovovanic
Kuyt, N'Gog

Out of that list, it's likely we'll see Yossi and Cavalieri depart and Degen is a waste of space.

So, we'll need at a minimum 1xGK, 1xLB, 3xCM, 1xLW, 2xST and that'd still see us relying on youth to an extent.

We'd just end up buying a load of randoms.

Leadership??

Babel, Torres, Lucas, Gerrard?

Id never been a fan of Gerrards leadership. I would imagine it would actually be counter-productive.

Torres sulked like a fucking chump all of last season- thats not leadership. His English isnt that great either. Isnt he quite a quiet bloke by nature?

Lucas is sensible but can bearly speak a word of English

Babel is just a turd.

(Considering all of these players other than Lucas are considering their options right now)

The sale of these players could easily reach 120+ million...

That should be enough to build a squad capable of getting us back into the top 4.

It wouldnt be easy to replace them but...
Id imagine Gago and Cambiasso being available for around 20 million for both..
Hamsik for 25 million...
Ashley Young - 20 million
Lavezzi - 20 million
Honda - 20 million
Turan - 15 million

Firstly, our team would be worse off with the players you mentioned.

Secondly, why the fuck would anyone of them want to sign for us when we've just cleared out our first team squad of all it's quality.

Mascher we dont really have a choice..

Gerrard is getting older and im pretty positive would like a move to Real.. better getting 35 million or so rather than nothing.

Babel and Lucas are not good enough..

Torres is the difficult decision - But he is injury prone - doesnt like the physicality of the premierleague and we could afford 3/4 quality players for what we could get for him.

Id like to think that Liverpool is still an attractive club for quality players. Considering we would still have Reina, Johnson, Agger, Skrtel, Carra, Kuyt, Aquilani we arnt completely out of quality.

I honestly couldnt imagine players wanting to sign for a club with a sulky squad that are likely to leave in the next 2 years unless we win the league. That would increase the pressure on the squad - Leave everyone uncertain and after the two years.. They would leave for minimal money and it leaves us without the money to strengthen the squad.

If we sold those players then the likes of Reina, Agger, Johnson and Kuyt would start looking elsewhere too.

I can see some merit in selling Gerrard, in the same way that Arsenal cashed in on Vieira but sadly we are so heavily reliant on him and have noone waiting to come in so it wouldn't be wise for us.

Selling Torres has no merit at all.

I don't think Gareth means sell them all in one job lot, more sell and replace one by one.

That said, there's a good argument to say that a minimal amount of ins/outs would be a good thing this summer.

The seismic change I'd go for is dropping Carra. He's been a phenomenal servant to the club and can play an important role as a squad player but his days as automatic selection are over. We need to keep Stevie G for the same reason i.e. we can't lose Carra and Stevie G at the same time as they are the heartbeat of the club.

Is it just me or have we just employed a new Manager to 'steady the ship'?

I'm expecting the Manager to retain our better players, move on those squad players that don't cut it. Perhaps sign some trusted names, he's a man who has been around long enough to have compiled a list, to improve overall squad quality.

Given the short period before we start in the Europa League I doubt there'll be much upheaval.

You might fancy doing it on Champ Manager, but in real life at least half of the new players you bought over one summer wouldn't work out (if you had to replace that many) - then we'd be royally fucked.

Masher is certainly going, and i think Gerrard is feeling he's done his stint. The manager's job will be to replace those players as best he can, and to drive as hard a bargain as he can in selling those players.

I can't quite make up my mind on this one.

In Gerrard and Carra we have two great great players for this club whose legs are going.

Where Gerrard is concerned, i find myself arguing for experience and where Carra is concerned i find myself arguing for fresh legs.

Hyypia played a role of a leading center-half albeit playing in only about 60% to 70% of our fixtures in the last two years. May be Carra should play a role like that. But i'm certainly dead against him starting 50+ games in the season.

We can't just start selling players the moment they start getting less mobile due to age. Paul Scholes for example has not had any less impact after he retired from England. Giggs has played well in his thirties too. There has been many many players who have done well in the thirties, when playing for the right team. Some players can adapt to a more matured role, and i think Stevie and Carra can do that. But the rest of the team has to be able to make up for that in terms of providing that mobility. That is also why i hate the thought of losing Mascherano. He just covers so much ground!

Yes, great idea. Sell our three best players.

You're a fucking *genius*

"If" we're ever to sell Stevie this has to be the time to do it.

He's not getting any younger
We'd still get a decent fee for him
His form has been worryingly patchy over the last year.

*Not that i want to sell him*

Well.. i dont know why im even bothering to reply to you..

We could get around 120 million if we sell now... in 3 years its likely UNLESS we are back on top immediately that they will leave on Bosman..
I highly doubt Torres can keep his fitness and in a couple of seasons his price will drop significantly.. As will Gerrards due to his age..

If you had a house that someone was willing to pay 10 times more than it would be worth in two years.. Would it be genius not to sell??

I think this is one of those situations that we rarely see in the Football world.. However in the NBA its a common place to trade your ageing underperforming superstar for young starlets and bring in cheaper experienced players to provide consistancy.. More often than not the entire playing group realise they have to step up and as such a new determination and attitude is born..

In the words of Daffy suck .... Insulting my integrity, eh, fatso? You're dethpicable.

I don't think that is what we need at the moment Gareth, and is one of the main reasons Roy was the preferred candidate, he more than anyone will be able to put a sticking plaster on things.
We are at a tipping point. We need to walk very delicately and just consolidate at the moment , next season needs us to stop the rot and try to improve our current position, yes 5th or 6th is not very ambitious, but until funds arrive and transfer windows fit, that will do me. If we do that we will avoid Brendan's Armageddon scenario.
Some of that is not in the clubs hands and it needs us to keep at least one of Gerrard and Torres, both would be great.
Selling Gerrard for the right money is all well and good, but we need all our talismanic figures right now

regards

i think this is my GEN Y'ness coming through again..

i seem to like HUGE changes.

I just doubt both Gerrard and Torres' commitment at the moment. If i was them id probably want away from all the pressure, politics, negative media and speculation. Its one of the reasons Torres left Athletico and Gerrard would be in dreamland at Real.

Yes, he'd be in dreamland at Real, away from all the pressure, politics, negative media and speculation.

Do you try and write posts in which every single thing is bollocks, or is it a gift?

do you think he is fed up at Liverpool?

So, you'd sell all of our best players and then entrust the proceeds to a manager who has absolutely no track record working with a large transfer budget?

That's insane.

Woy has got a track record: a shit one.

He was given £20m to spunk at Blackburn and paid £7m for Kevin Davies. And was sacked halfway through the following season with Blackburn bottom of the table.
