He's the closest player to Gerrard I've ever seen.

He's not the physical force of nature that Gerrard was, nor is he as talismanic, but his passing, crossing, movement, vision and skill is so amazingly impressive. He made things happen every time he had the ball, and seems to slow time down when in possession.

Amazing player, although not as good as Gerrard obviously

We forced them to though, we force every team to make mistakes with pace, pressure & creativity.

They don't those mistakes regularly. The fact we're the first team to beat them proves that.
Our pressing was unreal today. This isn't a team that you want rested.

Quality ox interview post game on NBC. A footballer who you don't mind opening his mouth for once...

Indeed, but they also made stupid mistakes, even when there wasn't a Liverpool player on top of them
Oh I agree, but I think the mental strain of having players giving you zero time for most of the game is big enough to affect those lapses in concentration. I think we did brilliantly until Can left the field.

Er, what? I mean on the one hand we won, but on the other it should have been more emphatic... I'm really not sure how to feel, oh hang on, that's not true at all, I'm elated.

We're still shit in defence, Karius is a fucking spastic, and Gomez and Lovren are rubbish

His playing style seems different, but he is a capable of taking the ball from deep just as well, & carrying it, playing crosses & passes from almost anywhere & has that same vision too.

He's nowhere near as aggressive, & is more composed overall, but he's also more consistent in his positioning than stevie ever was. Both of which are a necessity of the game played today.

Can and Wijnaldum were very impressive, two big performances just when we needed it

I think De Bruyne does lack a bit of edge, yeah, although most players in the world are 'nowhere near as aggressive' as Steven Gerrard

Gomez isn’t rubbish. He’s young and has a really bright future. He needs coaching but we’ve got a player there.

Thank fuck for that. I'm tired of banging this drum by myself.

I bet you remember Carra being well worse at fullback at the same age too. Most people seem to forget that the crowd would all shit themselves when he got the ball or had to defend.

Really? I remember being exacerbated when he had the ball, but was never really worried about his defending. Did well in the treble season too.
Gomez just seems very very thick on occasion.

Yes mate, Carra was the scapegoat for a good couple of seasons when he first came in. We have to give them time. Gomez is boss, yeah he’s made a few mistakes but you can see a proper footballer there. He’s still only what, 21?

Fuck me.

Stevie would have twatted De Bruyne off the park today.

And been sent off for it.

The line of aggression/tackle has been moving ever towards no contact season after season.

There's a reason teams don't have overly aggressive midfielders in the vein of Gerrard or Roy Keane, even Vieira anymore.

From what I've seen of him, Keita is the closest thing in world football to one.

He was barely average at fullback, and even worse at CB when he was tried there in his early days - the object lesson in not writing players off too quickly.

Phew. Nearly a draw I would not have welcomed. Fantastic win but agony in the end.

Defenders are never great when young & never consistent. It's why there aren't 21 year old CB's playing at any top CL side regularly.

Defenders only learn with experience, & that means mistakes, which often cost you goals.

It's either develop a great defender & take the mistakes or spend 75m on every defensive position to get someone that has already been developed by another club, which we can't afford to do like city can.
