Liverpool v Plymouth - FA Cup - Match Thread

It's not a £40m pound player that's the difference between beating Plymouth Argyle, at home. It's making the wrong choices. Do you really think we drew today because we need to sign someone? If Lallana and Sturridge had started, we'd have won.

It's not like Sturridge will start against United anyway.
Which is the most infuriating part.

I have no doubts that Sturridge will play a minor part against southampton, if any. So why not give the fucker 45 minutes today, he was clearly not having any problems fitness wise, when he did come on.

Probably because we are going to need him fresh for some of the remaining 7 matches in January.

Maybe it depended on how the opposition would play that determined Klopp's decision to not play him for long. As they were defending doggedly - Klopp may have thought it would be more risky as they would be trying to stop him; and also because Studge would be facing a brick wall for most of the game with zero space to run into. Not worth the risk.

That was anti-football by any standards, as painful to watch as daytime ITV on a bad day,

One word Houllier

Having said that, it was poor from Klopp that the side never got going, not even after half time. And I really cannot cope with the prospect of a similar bunch of fools being sent out in a week or so

He is not doing that bad so far. I can definitely put up with it again If it serves a purpose

We could be out of two cups and slipping down the league in a week.

a bit hysterical

In that game we saw everything I've been complaining about in the reserve team/league ethos - no competitive fight, no urgency, no drive, just decent technique. Play a few alongside an experienced set of players and they might learn something, but that kind of insipid performance gets them a pat on the back every week for the ressies, and that's why they're not ready.

How are they supposed to hone desire and skill if not with better opposition in a real competition.

Yes, we needed to rotate, obviously, but in a season without Europe we really don't need THAT many changes.

I don't agree Klopp obviously knows he's pushing the squad to its limits his physios must be informing him how many games they can play at that pace over a season. they've just been through a mincer.
They need a break.

Could be he wants to build the ressies confidence they haven't lost have they. Plus Lallana or Sturridge could have been injured.

It was a poor decision to play Woodburn as anything other than an out and out striker, Yes, he's got plenty of potential as a wide and deep-lying player, but he's no right to be out there today, ahead of better and faster wide players, floating around doing little. His one claim to fame as far as his value here and now is his natural instinct as a striker, attacking space inside the area and finishing moves off. .

I thought he did ok . In stark contrast to the rest of the team he was very mobile indeed in the first half with lots of little runs into space which weren't found by his team mates. Very mature for a 17 year old.

I'm usually not the most upbeat person in the world but I think some are taking the result a bit too far. Like others I expected us to win the game despite a line up consisting of a bunch of youth players. Looking at it from a different point of view, that reserve team managed to control the game and barely gave our opponents any chances.
We're still in it and our entire first team was rested.
Yes it's not ideal for us to travel to the south for a replay due to a congested fixture list but this gives that reserve team another chance at it. What people tend to overlook is that we fielded a mix and match team consisting of players who barely played together before against an organised Plymouth who are currently leading their division.
If our first team has trouble breaking down 8 man defences why is it so much of a surprise that our reserves had trouble doing it as well?
Anyway, we'll win the replay. They will have to attack us. Coutinho and possibly Henderson, who should be more rested than others in the squad will hopefully play.

If you don't take a competition seriously then undesirable results are more likely.

We are simply paying for our arrogance.

We may yet pay fully if we continue with the off-hand approach.

........................

But this is a sobering wake-up call to all who immediately embrace the 'play the reserves' dogma. We could be out of two cups and slipping down the league in a week. When we've got good enough reserves, well, play a few of them, but don't play them all like they've got some kind of contractual right. .......................

Or we could have progressed in the FAC and be on the verge of the LC final as well as having put United to the sword .. because we rested the players that badly needed resting instead of further weakening their reserves by playing them against a 2nd Division team.

8th - Plymouth
11th - Southampton LC Semis
15th - United at OT.

3 games this week - including 2 very important ones - on the back of Liverpool having the least amount of rest (3 games in 143 hours) of any team in the PL bar Saints over the Xmas/New Year schedule. The FAC is quite rightly rating a low 3rd on our list of priorities at the moment and I'm in full agreement with the team Klopp put out.

You've taken a worse case scenario Macca but by resting them we could yet be in a better scenario than if we had played more first teamers, as I've outlined above, and youngsters and reserves will have now had valuable match time.

Did anyone else here know that Plymouths goalkeeper killed two kids aged 8 and 10 whilst driving drunk and without insurance ?

It's not arrogance, it's a small squad built to give our first team players enough games to be content in a season without European football. The same squad is now being strained due to injuries. We couldn't afford to play our first team against them.

Ponder this, if Matip, Henderson, Coutinho, Ings and Mané were all available, you think Klopp would have gone with the same team?

Someone should go to the game and start a "murderer" chant behind his goal...

People make mistakes, it's football not court.

Yes, although the "no insurance" part is untrue.

A stupid, heinous and selfish crime that cost two lives, but whatever our thoughts on his sentence, he has served the time given him

RE Sturridge:
Sunderland was his "first start since the EFL Cup victory over Tottenham Hotspur at Anfield on October 25" and "he limped off with ankle injury"
If he started this game and went off injured, one can imagine the amount of barrage both him and Klopp will get.

RE weakened team/youngest lineup:
After a hectic Christmas/New Year schedule and with League Cup semis and match vs Man Utd coming up, surely its no surprise?
Main 'issue' is that our squad's strength in depth is weak and can't field a more experienced team after resting the regular XI. Man Utd made 9 changes to the line up from their clash against West Ham and it still included the likes of Mata, Rooney, Martial and Rashford. Arsenal made 4 changes and had Oxlade-Chamberlain, Lucas and Giroud coming in.

RE expectations:
Many (myself included) expected our youngsters to simply turn up and beat Plymouth, probably simply because there are in League Two. But realistically speaking, how ready are these young lads, especially playing together with few experienced pros around them? Just look at our players out on loan: Chirivella just went to the bottom placed team in Eredivisie, Awoniyi has played sparingly at NEC (bottom half of Eredivisie), Fulton is at Chesterfield who are in relegation position at League One, Jones' Swindon aren't faring much better - 4 points above relegation zone in League One. Or even those we left recently - Ibe, Smith, Canos, Sinclair - how frequent they are featuring and their progress. Ryan Kent at Barnsley is perhaps the only exception of the lot. Meanwhile, Chelsea can recall Ake who was into his 2nd season out on loan to a Premier League club.

RE no European football
Our squad was downsized accordingly. 22 players were registered - inc. Ilori, Ings, Manninger and Sakho. That's realistically 18 men (or 17 if you move Lucas to that group) and then there's injuries to Coutinho, Matip, Grujic, Sturridge etc.

I'll probably get slated for this but seeing how a couple of the bigger clubs like Man City and Arsenal seem to be taking FA Cup seriously, if the draw made tonight for 4th round is not favourable, I won't mind focusing on the league. To be honest, I don't think we went into the season with the team we had looking to compete in 4 competitions despite the lack of European football. Our progress in the league and League Cup probably meant priorities have to be tweaked accordingly.

Agree with most of that. The only point on which I'd differ really is that I knew the team we put out would have trouble with a well organised lower league team in good form. I'm not persuaded our squad is significantly weaker (if at all) than that of the other top 6 sides. The main difference was that we chose (and I can understand why TBH) to pick more fringe players than they did for their games.

I don't think anyone was that surprised about the team Klopp selected, but while I don't have any issue with prioritising games and competitions - and understand that we need to rotate players due to fitness, form, tiredness and also needing to bring players through and test them at a higher level - I do think that two issues were highlighted:

1) Klopp seems to have remarkable level of confidence in his young/ reserve players - which is great - but they're not that good, and only a few will make it at Liverpool.

2) We need a bigger, better squad.

I'm not arsed about the FA cup this year to be honest - I just want that top four slot sorted - Once Klopp has his foot in the CL door - we will start flying

1. I disagree they are good enough. They should be judged when playing alongside players from the first team. Put Ejaria or Ojo or TAA in the line up with Coutinho and Co and they'd probably do well.

2. We will have a bigger squad next season when we're playing in Europe.

Yeah, you could argue that.

Equally, when younger players are dropped into the first team, sometimes they still struggle, and the other argument comes out: "they're not used to playing with those players"

Most of the team on Sunday were quite used to eachother, and still looked like strangers.

Owen was a natural finisher, Fowler was preternatural
Yep. Fowler was that good that when he got really fat he literally scored with his arse on at least one occasion.

He was simply unreal.

I remember when soccer am was actually half decent (or I was young enough not realise otherwise), he appeared & did that shoot the ball through a hole game, where the ball was only a little bigger than the ball itself.

The next week they showed some grainy cctv footage from the car park. As he walked over to his car some 80 yards away from the goal setup the ball bounces towards him. He stops it, turns, points at the goal & lofts it through the hole.

Phenomenal striker. As much as I hate the fact I don't get to go the game anymore, I'm always so pleased I saw almost all his home performances in the flesh.

Two of them were blundering around at the back, I'm not sure how they affected the attackers.
The team was just too inexperienced.

Oh Modo, Modo, Modo - take it with a pinch of salt old chap - we don't have to use smilies on every post do we [emoji849]- oops
