Liverpool will have to pay £5 million if they want to sign Rangers’ young defender Danny Wilson. According to reports in the Daily Record on Thursday, the English Premier League side have been told they will not be able to sign the player for a fee below the Ibrox club’s valuation.

It is said by the newspaper that Liverpool were prepared to pay £3 million for the Scottish player’s services, having had a £2 million offer rejected earlier in May.

Rangers reportedly won’t accept any less than £5 million for their prized asset, who could leave for next to nothing in the summer of 2011 if no club matches his value this summer.

Wilson turned down a contract offer to stay in Glasgow as the season drew to a close. His current deal with the club is due to expire in the summer of 2011, meaning Rangers would receive only a nominal amount of training compensation in a year’s time.

It had been reported by some earlier in the week a hitch regarding the English top flight’s new limitations on squad sizes may have led to the Wilson deal collapsing altogether. However, STV Sport’s understanding is the ruling will have no impact on any possible transfer.

Introduced from next season, all clubs in the English Premier League have agreed to limit their player pools to 25, with eight of the players having to be classed as ‘homegrown’. To qualify for that status, a player has to have spent a minimum of three years at any English or Welsh club while under the age of 21.

LIVERPOOL'S BID FOR DANNY WILSON

•Liverpool move will make Wilson best in Europe
•Wilson snubs last ditch Rangers offer for Liverpool move
•McCulloch urges Wilson to stay at Rangers
•Rangers confirm Liverpool interest in Wilson
With Wilson still 18, Liverpool would be able to buy the central defender and, in three years time, have him as one of their ‘homegrown’ players. But in the meantime, he would still be able to play for the club without affecting their quota, despite reports he would be would be classed as one of his prospective team’s foreign players.

The rules of the new system stipulate that all players under the age of 21 are not included in the 25-man limit. Therefore, Liverpool can still sign and play Wilson without losing a spot for one of their clutch of overseas stars.

Even more crucially, having then spent three years on Merseyside, he would then be deemed as a ‘homegrown’ player for the club upon his 21st birthday.

We should sack the person who fucked up the intepretation of the rules. Having said that, he's only 18 and can not be included in the 25 man squad as we can register as many U-21s as possible. Sign him if he's really good, if not just flog him back to Scotland when he's 21.

Yeah ...Sack Parry......oh.

Ha! That's not what I meant. Seriously though, you would think that something like should have never happened in the first place.

Looking at the post by Hansern, it seems like the 'homegrown' players need not necessarily be English or Welsh. I interpret it as as long as the player has spent a minimum of 3 years at the any English or Welsh club while under 21, it doesn't matter which nationality he is. Which means the likes of Pacheco and Insua can be considered homegrown.

I know DHSC, it was a pop at anyone that thought that anything and everything that went wrong like this used to be Parry's fault 😉

Rangers need cash. I can't see them taking anybody as part-payment.
[/quote]

If they need cash they should take the £3M

We should promise Wilson a million pound signing on fee to run down his contract and sign a pre-contract agreement in January. We already have 5 centre halves so I don't see the necessity for another unless Rafa plans on flogging one of them.

The lads seems keen enough to want to sign for us and we should use that to our advantage. Is another 6 months really going to make such a difference?

It does when you're in Glasgow.

I agree. And they'll sell for thereabouts if we decline.

the issue would be in the mean time any number of better funded clubs could offer to match Rangers valuation and take him, how many times in the past have we lost out on good players we were at the front of the queue for by not getting the deal done when we had first crack at it. Im not suggesting we overpay for him cos Ive never seen the lad but to imply that nothing could possibly happen if we wait another 7 months til January isnt realistic

Squiggles, you're from Glasgow?

Like I was saying let the lad run down his contract and pay him the signing on fee. Its not like he is going to walk into the first team.

We're already offering 4m for Wilson - 2.5m upfront & 1.5m potential add ons.

Surely if woudn't be too much of a problemn to offer 3m upfront & 2m of add-ons.

Very few deals are all cash upfront these days.

Next time I'm in your bar, you're getting $2 up front for a pint, and the rest depending on whether I like it or not then.

Stevie recommends pretty good beer though. Better make sure the add-ons aren't too lucrative.

I had a go at some of that 'Boston Bros (that right?) Pale Ale' the other night. Really enjoyable.
