Lev Yashin, goal keeper for the Soviet Union said this:

"What kind of a goalkeeper is the one who is not tormented by the goal he has allowed? He must be tormented! And if he is calm, that means the end. No matter what he had in the past, he has no future"

They need to nail this quote to the wall so that Reina has to see it before and after every game.

I think Yashin's quote is total bollox. All keepers make the occasional blunder. Those who are tormented by a blunder are the bad keepers. We have had recent examples of that type of keeper in Jerzy Dudek and possibly David James and Sander Westerveld. The best keepers are able to shrug off their mistakes and not allow them to affect their form.

I think its phrased wrong but i get where he's comign from. You should always remember the mistakes because thats how you learn. You're beaten near post, next time don't leave the space. You need to remember the errors to ensure they're not repeated.

That's the way I understood it. Also this guy grew up in the Soviet Union, mistakes were punishable by being sent to work on the trans-Siberian railway!

Mistakes don't affect Reina in game, but he is prone to making the same mistake over and over again. Could be why he's perceived to have got worse over time as he's not learned.

He used to be one of my favourite players but Reina's standards have dropped and his attitude is poor. There are many goals that he could have made an attempt to save but didn't.

I agree that his standards in the last season or two are not as high as we got used to during his first 5-6 seasons with us. I'm not sure that's down to him becoming a bad keeper all of a sudden. I think it has to do with the storm the club has been going through for some time now, and especially the departure of Benitez who was probably a very meaningful person for him.
I would'n t go as far as selling him - do you have any good (and realistic) replacement in mind? Look at MU - how they struggled replacing Schmeichel and then replacing Van Der Saar. It's never easy.
I'd rather see him looking forward to the new manager and getting back to the good times.

Jimmy, any club would have trouble replacing Scheichel. I understand the turmoil that the players have been through and the changes that happened but this is football and he is a professional.

Good keepers are generally hard to find but what has Pepe done this season that warrants us keeping him? He is not a bad keeper by any stretch of the imagination but his attitude leaves a lot to be desired. His place in the team is virtually guaranteed because we don't have anyone pushing him and that could be the root of the problem.

I simply think that its down to having his head turned and the deal not pushing through. Maybe he just needs an old fashioned beat down?

All we ask is that he makes an effort and play for the shirt. Celebrating winning goals is all good and well but make a contribution.

Vorm would be a great buy.

I didn't post this as any type of attack on Reina's goalkeeping in case anyone is wondering. I just thought it was an interesting point that had been made by a guy considered to be one of the best. Back in the day that is.

Aye, but some older cunts have told me that Sir Stanley Matthews was the greatest winger of all time and "modern day players couldn't hold a candl..." and then I've watched footage of him and bust my hole laughing.

Back in the day every cunt moved at about 2mph, had no idea how to defend, wore football boots made out of fucking tyres, had never even heard of a stepover, had a goalkeeper in nets who tried to save things by throwing his fucking cap on the ball, couldn't run quickly due to some piece of fucking shrapnel stuck in their hip from Gallipolli, actually watch it for yourself.

In fact it tends to be the younger ones who do that because they never saw the legends in action. We sat through the reality of them having shit games. 😉
