Good game from Benteke, nice link up play. He's very much the instinctive finisher, give him time to think about a chance and he makes the wrong decision, but he played well tonight, well done.

Gets a lot of abuse and shit from our own fans, but has 7 goals in 13 starts and better goals pr game average than the best striker in the English world Harry Kane.

I think there are valid points to be made about his suitability. It's great him showing signs of improvement in his overall play last night, but it was only Sunderland - by the same token, Borini carved himself two great chances that he was unlucky with, on another day they could have gone in, but it doesn't change much about our opinion of him. Whereas Benteke had a bit of fortune with the way his chance fell to him.

One thing you just cannot take away from him is that he's one of the most instinctive finishers in the Premiership. One thing you *can* level at him is that he's not the most intelligent of footballers, and I think that shows in both his approach play and his conversion rate when he has to think about an opportunity.

If he's keen to improve then that's good for him and us, but I think when we clearly want a fluid attack that interchanges constantly - which we saw at it's very best against City, Chelsea and Southampton, then he falls short of fitting into that setup. His price puts questions over how feasible it is to keep him as an option too. As I say, he's a great finisher and his record so far is as good as he's been elsewhere, statistically, so people labelling him "shit" or "awful" are just exaggerating their doubts about him. As I say though, some reservations about him aren't unreasonable.

But...but... they both play on the left!

They do, and Lovren was shite previously when played on the right, so people having concerns about the feasibility of their partnership were right to do so. Hindsight is great after two games though, obviously.

We have to be more clinical. Firmino with the poor touch and the clear header, Ibe and Benteke had chances we should have put away.

Having said that it was a good fight throughout and for once we dominated on set pieces against. We can build on these two games as we have three more of same coming up in a short time.

Good post mate. Definetly valid points about his suitability.
He's still only 25 years old though, so I'd let Klopp work with him for a while to see where we end up.
We wont get back what we paid for him and he's a great option to have regardless so I'd deffo keep him for next season. Hopefully Klopp can work his magic.
He scores goals, helps out defensively on set pieces and is completely different to our other strikers. We need that in the squad.

Moron's summary:-

1) Very painful to watch as it has been for the last 5 PL games.
2) Looked very defensively aware during this game, everyone from the front got back as soon as the ball was going into our half.
3) Firminio - still not convinced, really he has done nothing in the scheme of things to justify his price tag.
4) Benteke - ran a bit more so a slightly more mobile statue. Yes he is getting the winners but I want him to score more goals in a game.
5) Thought defence and Emre were the best players
6) Coutnhio was a marked man throughout the game
7) I was tense throughout and started worrying in case we got hit on the break, and it feels the same in every game we play.

We must seriously scare ALL the other teams, as they all seem to defend for their lives when playing against us. What is it about us that makes us so fucking special ? - I mean we are 7th and were 9th yesterday before the game but yet everyone plays us like they are playing against champions. I think Klopp is kinda frustrated with a lot of what he sees from our team now, you can tell and why do we keep conceding last minute corners when we are only leading 1-0 against a team ?

I didnt see the game....just glad we avoided a potential banana skin.

Also happy the Klopp has firmly refused to give Lucas a look in no matter how dire the injury situation is. Its about time a manager did that for us. I couldnt take any manager who thought Lucas was first team material seriously.

The gap between 4th and 5th now stands at 4 points....im starting to see that apart from Leicester the other three clubs in there are unlikely to drop off the top 4. Leicester have a 9 point cushion over us. It may well be game over for top four...

It was painful watching him in the past 2 games though.

He didn't look like scoring at all, seems to have 2 left foot, no speed, little strength and is in general out of sync with most of our plays. I called him out as "shit".

Then he comes up with 2 match winners out of the blue and in each game, contrived to miss 2 of the easiest chance you would have seen in any game this season.

I have no idea what to make of him.

We can be scary when we're on song (not that that's happened often enough) but IMO the main reason why teams pack their defence against us is simply that they know it's got a good chance of working, because we haven't yet figured out how to combat it. I'm not over-anxious about that, because Klopp hasn't been here that long yet and I'm confident he'll work out what needs to be done, but at the moment parking the bus is a good bet against us.

It was the Christian Benteke's sixth goal in seven games against Sunderland, which included five for former club Aston Villa, and contributed to Liverpool's fifth 1-0 victory this campaign.

Liverpool's £21.3m signing Roberto Firmino came close to completing just his second full match of the season in all competitions, but was brought off by Jurgen Klopp in injury time. In his 22 games for Liverpool, the Brazilian has reached 70 minutes on just nine occasions.
