Stronger, quicker and more physical than Aurelio and more of a natural full-back than Agger. Carragher was superb there under Ged, why not Kelly?

Er, quite. Just testing. 😉

The basic point stands though. He'd be my choice for LB given the current squad.

I want him there not just because I think he's a better bet than Aurelio or Agger but also because he'll inject some youth and positive energy into the side, and heavens knows, we need a bit of that currently.

He did use his left foot once or twice against Robotknickers, though it's clearly his weaker side.

Magic might be OK at LB too, but I'd prefer to leave him where he is now that he's established there.

Kelly has almost zero experience. He's looked promising so far, but all it would take is one or two bad games and his confidence could be shot like Insua's.

We need to buy an experienced, left-footed, non-injury-prone, non-fat-and-shit LB before the transfer window closes, irrespective of who our first back-up is.

Point is, if Mascherano is sold for 20 million, and we spend half of that on Toivonen, where would you want the rest to go, to a left-back or to someone like Diarra to replace Masch. I know left-back's a need but I know what I'd want. Kelly can do a job there. In fact, I think he'll do better than that.

I've been on about this for ages. The season he spent on loan was almost exclusively spent at left-back and he excelled (albeit at a lower level). He's likely better at right back (or in time in the centre), but would do a fine job for us at left-back too.

He's got a lot more about him than Insua it seems so should get his chance.

Alternatively, let Mavinga have a go. Another real prospect.

A proper (left-footed) left winger with attacking intent.

We may well not be able to sign a LB we really want anyway. If not, the question is whether we field an intermittent sicknote or give Kelly his chance. My preference for Kelly is based on two things, (a) the impression I get that he's made of sufficiently stern stuff to ride the inevitable knocks, physical and otherwise, and (b) the fact that he's better defensively than Aurelio, which may be at a premium this season.

I'd love for that to happen. In an ideal world, we'd sign a striker (Toivonen), get Lass Diarra on loan, and try and make a bid for N'zogbia, who's definitely available. In all probability, however, we'll get about 16 million + Hleb for Masch and sign some obscure left-back.

Neil, what you mean is: Aurelio is the best attacking left-back at the club. Believe it or not (I know you won't), that may not be what we need just now.

Insua was never that good to begin with.
I think Kelly's far more athletically gifted and intelligent.
If he loses his confidence and becomes shit, then fine, get rid. If he doesn't, then we know we'll have Carra mkII for the next 10 years.
You HAVE to give youth with potential a go. That's how Arsenal and Scum developed their youth. As did we at one point.
What have we got to lose? We're not going to get anywhere near the title this season so we might as well try a youth player that looks better than the other senior player options available. If it doesn't work then we'll still cope.
People aren't advocating replacing a Gerrard or a Torres or a Carra.
We'd be replacing a make-shift leftback or a forever injured one. The forever injured one will be great backup for Kelly.

Sure, why not?

I feel like Mike Basset right now:

'Oh just go play wherever the bloody hell you like!'

Salcido from PSV for £3M, Toivonen for £10 and Diara for £10M.

Sorted!

Lass or Mama?

Eerrrr...Carragher was a DISASTER as fullback. But yeah, give Kelly a run.

Not really.

Anyway, start Kelly there and move him to CB eventually. I was impressed with him using his left foot regularly against that shite European team. If only Babel tried the same once in a while.

Nonsense. In those days he was MUCH better at fullback than in the centre. It was Rafa who turned him into a top CB.

Carragher was not a disaster at full back.

Yes he absolutely was! Its a long time ago so I'll forgive you for not remembering.
