Keane & Vieira

Nope, nothing about Gerrard.

I know people will (rightly) bang on about Keane being a bit of a cock, but I think it gets forgotten how good a player he was.

He was a fucking colossus. In the top 3 footballers I've seen in my lifetime I'd say. He had everything.

He was an outstanding footballer though top 3 players seriously is pushing it.

I liked the one word answer Vieira gave when asked what set him apart when he was young from all the other talented youngsters...

Heart.

How many of our players can you say has 100% genuine heart, passion, will to win, fight etc?...

Gerrard used to, only Suarez really.

That documentary should be used as an educational video for young players to drill into them what it takes to be a winner.

I 100% agree with you, but I don't think it would work with kids. They're more interested in when they can get their first diamond earrings, first porche, and where all the birds are.
Look at Sterling for example, I' don't he'd learn much from watching Viera or Keane. He's on 30k a week now.....

You're more likely to motivate kids in poorer countries where proper poverty is widespread.

Like you said, Suarez has heart, I don't see any heart in any of the fuckers turning up for the england team.

Weirdly the first thing that pops into mind when I think of Vieira these days is when he and Juve got absolutely taken apart by a Fabregas led Arsenal.

Viera was a force of nature in his prime. He got the better of Gerrard in most of our matches against them, too.

Keane done it on a regular basis in Europe as well as the league so he edges it for me.
His performance in Turin was one of the greatest of all time.
Viera never quite cut it in Europe for both Arsenal and Juve.

i loved it when they were organising their respect best teams and keane leaves out all the players who seem to have got on with Fergie. parker ahead of neville? wtf?

Parker was an excellent defender at both CB and FB despite his height. Just because he was pre Sky doesnt make him shit.

His reading of the game was excellent. Neville wasn't the greatest FB in the world and was an even worse CB. He did of course have the luxury of playing in an excellent Utd team at the time. But G Neville was not an integral part of that for me.

sure, there is no denying that parker was very good, he won titles in a very good side. but neville was consistently outstanding for a long period of time. it's not perfect, but I imagine most manure fans would pick neville over parker?

leaving out giggs was bizarre - if anything he should have been ahead of beckham with ronaldo there too.

Our recent players that remind me most or Keanu & Viera respectively are Mascherano & Hamman.

Nether quite got there - but, certainly in Hammans case, weren't far off.

I'd live to have seen Masher & Keane go at it...

Gerrard's a different beast - always thought best all round player I've ever seen, but there's better players in specific skill areas.

In a 4231 - You'd play Keane & Viera in the centre, Gerrard in the middle of the attacking 3, with Zola to the left, Ronaldo to the right & Henry up front.

Id say that Parker was a better all round player than Neville. Leaving Giggs out is very strange I'd agree.

Parker could do more things well than Neville could, but I'd put Neville in any team ahead of him at RB. Defensively Neville was one of the top half-dozen fullbacks I've seen in English football, whereas Parker - good player though he certainly was - wasn't one of the top anything. IMHO of course.

I'd go along with that. He was superb in that semi final.

His sheer drive gave him an aura, which I don't think Vieira had. I think his legacy is helped by being part of the best midfield in world football (possibly ever?) with Scholes, Giggs and Beckham. All at the peak of their powers with complementary yet different attributes.

Vieira wasn't the same without Petit next to him. When they were together, what a partnership they were though, especially with Pires, Ljungberg and then Henry and Bergkamp. What a team.

Yep, its sad and frustrating at the same time, as was mentioned on the Wisdom thread its a bit tragic that a player like him can be swanning around in a 100k Porsche before he has achieved anything in the game, its a fucking joke tbh.

Yeah thats who i was thinking of along with Carra/Hyypia when saying when we had those type of players it coincided with a bit of success for us, Mascherano was unlucky he didn't pick up a big trophy with us, if the club wasn't falling apart and was calm like now and he had stayed along with Alonso and we built on that 09 team im sure he would of got his hands on one.

You have got to be taking the piss. Best midfield in world football possibly ever? Hahaha

Yep, any midfield with Zidane in it would piss on it. And the fact that team won one European cup, and it they were lucky to win that one, is the proof of the pudding for me.

to
Exactly, they couldn't control games in Europe at all.

Yep. They were tactically naive. And the Turin semi was down to an amazing performance by Keane.

I'd take our midfield of Kennedy, Terry Mac, Souness and Case over their midfield. Every time. Not biased but they were just such a great match. Except in Tbilisi once!

That midfield went to places like Benfica who were a strength in Europe at the time and rolled them over. Not to mention the semi in Munich in 81. I still hear the radio commentary to that one in my head when Kennedy scored that away goal.

Or you could equally say the best thing about Luis Garcia's career was that he ended Keane's. Either way, we shouldn't let any of this thread get in the way of the fact that Keane was an absolutely enormous cunt.

Keane was a thug. He was very good but there's some overboard hype going on in this thread.

Same about Viera. Decent player but I'd have Gerrard or Alonso ahead of him anytime.

Keane was a great player, he is a complete cunt and a thug to boot. I would have either Gerrard or Alonso above him.

Agreed.

The Haaland incident moved him from a great player to a dirty thug bastard imho.
I still cant believe none of Haalands teammates took him out after that.

Vieira was an excellent. One of the key reasons for Arsenals success.

What do you mean "was"?

Was... Is.... And always will be.

Yes, fucked up my tenses there. He's a cunt now, but you can kind of laugh at his swaggering pomposity, knowing he's been a fucking shit manager. He's a fucking joke who takes himself laughably seriously. Then he was a cunt I properly detested.
