Nnanana. Hang on... I didn't say best... I said 'one of'. OK, it's a fairly nebulous term... So lets say top ten. I'd argue he could be top ten. He's got pace and pow... Hang on I've just turned into Alan Hansen, but he can beat a man, his crossing is ace, he can shoot great.
He certainly has the potential to be one of the best yeah.

Mind you, that's quite uncharitable to Johnson.

Am I the only person here who thinks Johnson could be one of the very best wingers in the world, and wonders who the fuck ever told him he was a defender?
You certainly aren't, but I for one don't agree with any of you on that point. I go back a long way and can remember the occasional attempt over the years to turn a nifty attacking fullback into a winger. It's never worked in my experience - the players in question inevitably look lost when receiving the ball from behind them instead of running on to it.

Besides, Magic's defending really isn't THAT bad. It really is about time we Reds dug in against that vastly exaggerated media campaign.

JJ, I don't know why you keep defending him over his, uhm, 'defending'. It's pretty terrible at times. Granted he's come on a bit, but he gets caught out of position far too many times, the right sided centre back get's horribly exposed (coincidence that Skrtel and Carra had poor seasons?) and he makes mistakes far too often.

I agree with all of that Jules.

Roy Evans' big tactical idea was the use of wing backs, but it never worked properly because you need a specially talented kind of player to do that job. Roy tried to make wing backs out of Stig Bjornebye and Jason McAteer - they did their best but they weren't up to it.

I also agree that Johnson's defending isn't too bad - it's become a bit of a cliché to say that he is great going forward but he can't defend.

Almost every goal can in some way blamed on someone and full backs who are expected to assist in attacking are more vulnerable than others to this.

Mark, "at times" are the operative words in your post. I've never denied that he does such things at times. I have denied, and I still deny, that he does it massively more than other fullbacks. He certainly didn't in S.Africa for example - the problems lay elsewhere altogether.

As for Skrtel and Carra, the first was injured for a lot of the time and the second himself played fullback - which he doesn't like - pretty often. I doubt Magic's perceived shortcomings had much to do with either player's performance TBH.

Fair enough, I just thought both looked horribly exposed at times. Maybe it was partly indicative of their own shortfalls too. And though I do think the press go overboard in their criticism of JJ (and he did do well enough at the WC), I do think their are issues above the norm, which need ironing out.

As a player though and an attacking threat he's clearly worth his weight in gold. Hopefully he can rid himself of the injuries which dogged last season.

Yes, spoke to him again today. He's adamant. He's usually right on Spurs related stuff.

Well, Tony Hadley says he's joining Arsenal.
I know this much is.....True.

I really think it's between us and Spurs tbh. Arsenal have a whealth of attacking talent, and have Jack Wilshere who is pretty similar to Joe Cole. Today Wenger said that Wilshere won't go out on loan again.

Add to that their wage cap and I think they're out of it.

*prays to God that Cole doesn't go there now and that I've gotten it extremely wrong*

No, you definitely aren't.

I previously suggested that we get an orthodox right back and push Johnson further up the park.

Poor Joe turned up at Melwood for his medical after the gateman had locked up and gone home. He wasn't able to get through the barricades.

Cheers. Anyways, more on that sort of thing. The season before last at the back end of the season, we played Hull and beat them just before the mancs came back coz of a flukey pen against Spurs. I sit in the centenary so get a TV view perspective of the game - but at Hull I was right behind the goal, and for some reason we started and ended the game with no one on the left. It didn't look that way on match of the day but stood right behind it, it was mental. There was this gap where someone should have been and if Alonso wouldn't have twatted it in from the freekick rebound we probably wouldn't have scored as they were soaking everything up as we were so narrow and everything was on the right.

We kinda stuck with that stupidness last year. After Riera and Rafa got divorced, Insua got all kinds of shit for being crap... but most of the time there was no one in front of him. Sometimes I'd swap my tickets and get a dad and lad in the anny road and I just couldn't get my head round how easy we were to defend against. It just seemed so simple - I wanted to get Rafa and stick him on the Kop ad say 'look... look at that you fucking mentalist... there's no one fucking there...' but what do I know?

This is rambling now... But Cole would fix that. Mind you, Riera might.

*gets shot*
Yes agree, welcome aboard Crump, I think we might get on.

regards

(PS We are in the main stand so I will wave to you next season 😉
