Joe Cole

Which one? Where? Did hear it himself or did someone pass the info on? Smartarse. 😛

Which one? What fucking difference does it make

'Oh, it was at Gleneagles'

'Gleneagles? Redknapp *always* lies about Joe Cole when he's there. Now if it had been Royal Birkdale...'

Presume it was the JP McManus invitational. It was on last week and Redknapp was there I think.

I think thats about right. I read it over on RAWK and posted the info on here.

Jamie Redknapp was on SSN and said Liverpool would be the perfect club for Joe Cole. Arry will be most pleased..

it makes sense for us to sign Cole and take a risk.

He's English and we need to boost our quota of English players. Would you rather have Cole or the lacklusture Wright Phillips for a fee plus a few grand less in wages and Milner is not available for a sensible fee either. There is a derth of available English talent so securing Cole for 3-4 years is an acceptable risk considering he's one of the best English players around

I'd be amazed if he signed for us and thoroughly confused if we paid him what's been suggested; we're already in enough debt surely?

Yes but there is no signing-on fee. It's usual for the player's wages to be inflated when it costs the club nothing to sign him.

Which is also spread across to term of his contract so no major initial outlay.
It seems to me we should be making him a very good offer, it seems a good opportunity, out of contract top class players come around rarely.

Liverpool are once against odds-on favourites to sign Joe Cole this summer as punters continue to bet on the England international's next club

Last week saw Cole go out to 9/4 to join Liverpool but the former Chelsea midfielder as of Monday lunchtime was back in to 8/13 with Sky Bet to move to Anfield this summer.

Cole is out to 15/8 (from 5/6) to join Arsenal after punters stopped backing a move to the Gunners over the weekend.

My Spurs mate is still adamant this will happen. He's even offered to buy me dinner next week when I'm in London if Cole hasn;t signed by then!

Gerrard and Torres to stay.

Cole and Javo on free's. Decent start if all true.

*Trying to be positive*

Gerrard and Torres staying, and Cole on a free. That would be a massive, massive boost before the season kicks off. IF we can get him, and add some other quality players. Then the season a head could be quite a good one.

If new owners arrived aswell, I'd die of the excitement.

and if you factor in Paul Scharner signing, we're talking a proper jizz-fest.

Wise. I got my hopes up on Ribery last year and it fucked with my head. If Scharner doesn't sign it'll result in therapy.

I just don't see why he would want to join us in our current state. He could stay in London with Arsenal, or even Tottenham, why would he join a club in turmoil like ours? I can't see it.

He won't be joining us, and we won't be taken over by a middle eastern consortium any time soon.

*Hopes he has tempted fate enough for it to happen*

There are actually plenty of reasons for Cole to come to LFC. The main reason he's leaving Chelsea is to get regular games at top level, and at Liverpool he'd be pretty much guaranteed those. Meanwhile Tottenham have only just broken into the CL spots and there's no guarantee they'll stay there, while the Arse's salary cap won't sit well with the money Cole will be after.

As for new owners - define "soon". Broughton's staked his reputation - which is vital for his career - on us being sold in a matter of months.

Hmmm, he'd probably have more footballing reasons to join Spurs right now. Harry would play him, deffo, and they ARE in the CL, and look better equipped than us to stay in it/ reach it again.

As for the London issue, maybe he might fancy a change?

I dunno. Not that arsed either way. He's good, but not great. Not anymore anyway.

This for the footballing reasons. Especially with such recent uncertainty clouding Torres' and Gerrard's futures. If I was Cole I wouldn't look too favourably on joining a club whose two best players could be off as soon as I got there.

With regards to the new owners, I'm really just talking about the rumours doing the rounds at the moment that we'll be sold tomorrow or something silly. 15th of July was it?

Put it this way, if we were on the cusp of being taken over, I doubt the new owners would insist on having Roy Hodgson installed as manager. Nor do I think the current board would hire Hodgson if there was something in the pipeline.

I think the earliest time we might be taken over, and this is being overly optimistic, is around Christmas time.

The way things could be tipping over this last few days/weeks could be very positive.
A bit more clarity from Broughton and some interesting revelations.
Much more optimism over Gerrard and Torres, the talk of some of our more underwhelming being looked at by other teams at decent money. At the same time the squad being strengthened by a couple of decent frees in Jovanovic and Scharner. If Mascher goes we have money to spend in his ,and in other, areas, if he stays he is a world class player in his position. Roy has not spent any money yet, and we can buy a decent left back, and another striker.
I think Aqualani will show he has what it takes after the benefit of a full pre-season with us, and no WC distractions, which if it comes to pass would be like having a new top class signing.
Why would Cole not come to us, and if he does, he will replace Yossi, and we are stronger again?
On top of all that we are not worrying about what Rafa will do, or say next.
If the above happens we are in a stronger position than we were this time last year, and everyone was tipping us for great things then.
Downside this season is that City are really starting to come of age, (it didn't take long), so we are going to have to displace them or Arsenal if we want that fourth place, which was always going to be a task.
We really do need the sale to go ahead sooner rather than later

regards

Quite so.

Fair comments from Hal and Brendan there, but one of the reasons I'm not quite so sure Cole would play as often at Tottenham is that their squad is indeed better than ours just now. By the same token I don't think the gap is huge (I reckon just getting the best out of our existing players will largely close it), and Cole might fancy the kudos which would follow if he became a pivotal figure in our return to the CL.

"Good but not great" has probably always been an accurate summing-up of Cole's ability. IMO, though, he's very good indeed at his best, and - equally importantly - signing him would send out a message, not least to potential future signings, that we're still aiming high.

I'm not sure the question of hiring Roy is quite as simple as Hal makes out. I think the board wanted stability above all, not only for its own sake but also to make the club a more saleable-looking proposition. If that's right, they could well have thought Roy was the best option even if something had been in the works already (and I say that as someone who still thinks Kenny should have got the job pending new owners coming). Nor do I agree that foreseeing a sale around Christmas is overly optimistic, especially given the reports of RBS losing patience. In fact, if there HASN'T been a sale by then, I expect things to move quite swiftly in the New Year.

yes sooner for sure

Yes, we need to turn that tide of positivity and we could be close. Still 60/40 though. Loved seeing Torres in our scarf, Roy's news on SG, and am hopeful we'll be sold soon. It's just that massive debt complicates all sale discussions, but we are still LFC, and hopefully a new transfer kitty with a new owner will shake things up.
