My mate who I have gone to the match with for the last thirty odd years is of the faith, he was suggesting that as Yossi is quite a strict practicing Jew, he may not make himself available next Saturday as it's a holy day something to do with Jewish new year.
Is that correct? If so is that something that we accept as being reasonable?

Will this be the same as the Alonso-Baby saga?He is a professional footballer so should feel privileged and give up all other things that take precedence over a 'normal' persons life

Some people would counter that by stating Muslims are given the freedom to fast for a month.

I think he will play. New Year's day is important, but so is Saturday and he does play on Saturdays.
Yom Kippur miht be a different issue, as it is considered THE holliest day on the Jewish calendar and involves fasting etc.
I remember Avi Cohen once playing for LFC in Yom Kippur, which started controvercy here, and I think there was a similar case with Ronny Rosenthal (not sure about this one though).
Bottom line - I'm pretty sure Yossi will play. He may ask for Rafa's permission to spend the holiday in London, but he'll play (if selected...)

That is not my opinion by the way, so don't make this a muslim v Jew thing because I happen to be muslim.
I'm asking the question, do people fell this will be the same as Alonso-baby thing, where people suggested Alonso give up certain privilages because he is a professional football.

I don't belive one should give up certain privilages, and I'm sure Yossi and his agent are smart enough that should he choose not to play on a religious day to him he would have it drawn in his contract.

Why would he want to spend it in London?

I don't think it's acceptable to miss a game for new year. Yom Kippur maaaaaaybe, but even then, if Muslim can play through Ramadan...

Muslims can at least eat in the morning and later that evening, a 24 hour fast is a bit tougher

Maybe so that he can go to the Synagogue rather than travel back to Merseyside in New Year's day? I'm only speculating and he may well travel back with the team.

But Rosh Hashanah, is over three days and involves a Saturday

It's actualy closer to 2 days - Friday night to Sunday night this year.
Saturday is not a factor here as he plays every Saturday (almost).

But does it not make it a bit more "special"this year?

It's different for those who are more orthodox, as some of the prayers and customs are slightly different due to one of these days being a Saturday. No diff for the rest of us.

It depends if he wants to keep his place in the first team Vlad.

Pretty much.

You can argue about the morality involved all you like but that's Rafa stance on the issue.

The players know where they stand.

If he plays will he wear his Kippa? And how come he doesn't wear it every week anyway? We could get a red one or a White one when we are away.

Ha Ha, and a black and gold one, Mike, that could be a great new item of Merchandise, we need to sign a Sikh now, that could pay for the new stadium

Yossi is not a 'religious' Jew. He as observant of various of the commandments and as he plays regularly on Saturday, I'm quite sure he'll play this Saturday too. I do assume however that he will be in London as Jimmy alludes too. As Yom Kippur falls on a Sunday night this year, I think he's clean there too (it's in 13 days)
