I reckon we should drop Gerrard for a bit, just until he regains his form.

I think Gerrard said this was his hardest pre-season ever and the coaching staff seemingly worked them over properly. Could explain a few of our second half performances.

Gerrard believes that an operation to sort out a long-term groin problem in 2011 – coupled with a rigorous pre-season training programme prepared by fitness coach Ryland Morgans this summer – has left him in ideal shape.

He said: “Personally, it’s been the most difficult pre-season we’ve had. The training’s been brutal.

“We’ve got a fitness coach who’s been in for close to eight months. He’s put us through our paces, and I think the quality has shown in our first four games – we’ve yet to concede a goal and we’re scoring freely. “So far, so good, but there’s still a long way to go and a lot of hard work to be put in, but we couldn’t be in better condition at this stage.”

Asked if he felt as fit as he ever had, Gerrard said: “Yeah I do, actually. That’s not just because of the pre-season work I’ve done. It’s been over the last 14 to 16 months since I had my groin fixed. I haven’t felt better. “In pre-season so far, I’ve done the majority of the training, I’ve played in all the games, and I feel really good and strong.

I don't see how a hard pre season would leave you tired towards the end of games - it should make you stronger and fitter towards the end of games. When on form he is undoubtedly our best and most influential player but when off form he is a total passenger.

I don't think he can be knackered already. Kolo isn't and he's, errrrr, more rotund than Gerrard.
He's just never been captain material and he's off form. But as he's the captain he can't be dropped. It's bollocks, if it was any other player including Suarez, he'd be 'rested'.

He's just never been captain material

That is utter, utter shite!! I think his body language at times looks uninterested at the moment, but to say he has never been captain material is so far off the mark!

FUCKING HELL!!!

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but he's not a leader of men, far from it. Would you fear for your life if Gerrard was giving you a bollocking if you were losing? It'd be like Enrique doing it.

Carragher was captain material, he was a leader, and he led by example.

I think being a captain is more than just being good at your job or consistent, and that's what Gerrard used to be. There's more to the job.

I agree with Mors. Gerrard is a good club captain off the field however is not as good at leading his team on the field.

Graeme Souness is an example of an outstanding Liverpool captain.

Ridiculous. Gerrard is a real captain and a great captain. He has proved it time and time again. Some people really have short memories. But he is the type to lead with example, not with words (Carra took care of the latter part). The problem is, when he is not playing well, he can't lead by example and shouting at people is not what he does anyway (not that shouting by a player who doesn't play well is all that helpful anyway).

My favourite Gerrard action (after the right foot thunderbolt) is seeing him run forwards with the ball waving his hands urging the team to show greater intensity.. I think he has been a great captain on the pitch.

Funnily enough they showed a clip on tv earlier this week of Gerrard in his early days as captain, and he was so vocal and dynamic it was quite a shock. He's just gradually gone into his shell over the years. A game or two in the stands watching Toure captain, who'd not only be vocal but would also really try to get the best out of his teammates, might make Gerrard realise what a good captain can do.

We're struggling to think who is going to replace Lucas during his ban so dropping Gerrard is a non starter. Just shows how lightweight our midfield options are. A top class CM is the priority in January. Sort that and we'll be ace.

I don't think he's tired at all. He was in the box when Suarez scored and added an option through the middle. I think his problem is his impatience which sees him try too many long passes when shorter ones, and moving into space to create an additional passing option would do.

I'd go 442 & play Henderson & Stevie in the centre, we shouldn't need a DM against Palace.

We do definitely need a damn good CM in January though.

Based on the new FFP, how much money do we have to spend anyways?

There isn't a whole lot more fat to cut off the team, but we probably ship Skrtel or Agger out by the way things are looking.

I think in the immediate future (i.e. Jan), it's probably just Skrtel out, one midfielder in.

From Wanyama's interview with Daily Mail today
[article=http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-2437231/The-Footballers-Football-Column--Victor-Wanyama-I-moved-Southampton-test-best.html#ixzz2gNxNqYC0 ]The best way to learn is to play against good players and my toughest opponent so far has been Steven Gerrard at Liverpool. I obviously knew about him but playing against him, I learned so much more.

He is such a clever player with his movement and his passing. It is hard to get him when he is on the ball and he is always moving into a different position.

I tried to close him down. We knew we had to stop him and close him out of the game. If you allow him, he can destroy your team so we knew it would make it difficult for Liverpool to control the game if we could close him down. We worked harder in the second half and got our goal but it was difficult.

We are a passing team and we moved the ball well enough but I'd still say Liverpool are the toughest team we have faced. Just their playing style and the level of players they have.

A few people asked if I swapped shirts but no I didn't. Sometimes when you have a great result like that I like to keep the shirt for myself.

Afterwards on the coach we were very happy. To win at Anfield was a great result.

I had heard a lot about the atmosphere and it was great. Certainly it seemed strange as they sing a lot of songs I recognise from my time at Celtic, particularly 'You'll Never Walk Alone'.

They were probably a bit quieter than Celtic fans though maybe that was because we won.[/article]

I fully appreciate that it's not necessarily going to win us a title but I suspect that when the time comes that Gerrard isn't available to play and balls like the one to Sturridge for our second goal are in the past, some of my love for football is going to die.

To be honest I didn't really even watch the rest of that move - great as it was. The ball to Sturridge from 50+ metres.... straight to his feet.... I don't watch a lot of football these days but I don't know anyone else who plays a ball like that. It was exquisite and majestic at the same time - worth the ticket prices on its own.

Alonso maybe?

Those who can play the same ball as consistently and as exquisitely are a select familiar few: Alonso, Pirlo, Xavi
