Exclusive - Barnes: Liverpool must secure three marquee signings this summer
By Nick Rostron-Pike | Thursday, March 29, 2012

John Barnes believes Liverpool must secure three marquee signings this summer if the club are to break back into the top four.
Manager Kenny Dalglish has spent over £100million on signings since rejoining the Reds in 2011, having signedJordan Henderson, Andy Carroll and Charlie Adam for big fees last year.
But former Anfield favourite Barnes claims more investment is needed as the side are too reliant on Steve Gerrard and Luis Suarez.

“Liverpool need better quality players, not squad players,” the former England winger told Drive Time. “While they expected that to be Carroll, Henderson, Adam and Enrique, they need three players who are true first team players.

“Those new players should not be rotated, they should be the main players. Liverpool need more creative players because if Suarez doesn’t score and Gerrard doesn’t drive forward and score goals, [they struggle].

“They need more attacking players, someone with a bit of flair in midfield and another goalscorer, a real centre forward.

"When you look at the top five sides, Man United, Man City, Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham I don’t think Liverpool have a better squad than them.

“We’ve relied on Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres in the past, now it appears we’re relying on Steven Gerrard and Luis Suarez.

“Hopefully with Andy Carroll, Stewart Downing, Charlie Adam and Jose Enrique they can show the form from last year which made Liverpool sign them in the first place. Let’s wait for another season before we make judgements of them.”

Carroll and Henderson have been unconvincing for the Reds this year but Barnes believes the pair deserve more time at the club before a final decision is made about their futures.
“Andy Carroll and Jordan Henderson had one year at Newcastle and Sunderland respectively, and got £35m and £17m moves,” he went on to say.

“Now in the future they will improve, but they’ve only been in the Premier League for one year [before getting moves].

“This is a long term project for Liverpool, they are looking at those players and thinking they’re going to be around for the next six, seven, ten years.

“All Liverpool fans will have wanted it to work straight away and it hasn’t, so let’s support them and give them a year to bed in. Let’s see what happens next year.”

Can I get an AMEN?

(I agree with every word he says)

“They need more attacking players, someone with a bit of flair in midfield..."

(We need him is what he's basically saying)

He was hopeless when Channel 5 in this country tried him out as a presenter, but as an interviewee he's boss - intelligent and knowledgeable, and strong enough to disagree with others when he thinks he should. Interviewers trying to get him to have a pop at LFC a la Lawrenson invariably get their @rses handed back to them on a platter.

And yes, he's right this time as per usual.

He was saying this on talksport earlier and he came across really well, I'm glad he's supporting Kennys signings too by saying give them another season.

Maybe he's another one that should still be around the club. He was also saying Pearce should be the england manager for the euros unless they can somehow get Hiddink.

He was awful on c5 cos he was on am auto prompter, it was also his first ever TV job.

Linekar was shockingly bad when first on motd even with the BBC training (generally regarded as the best in the business, hence why Jamie Redknapp used them before fucking off to sky), but they stuck with him, Barnes had the benefit of channel 5 training, which is inc below par, & they gave him a format which didn't suit him.

You have to admire the craftiness behind this statement. Get Pearce in and ruin England's hopes at the Euros as payback for all those years of flak for not performing for the national team. Someone start a petition in support!

Every single word of what Barnes said is what I've said for the last 2/3/4/5 fucking years.

Ryan - you're getting a bit long in the tooth to be a football player for much longer. Going for your management creds? I'm not having a pop or anything - I'm serious when I say I think you have a very astute eye for the game.

I've been doing my coaching badges for about 2 years now mate. In saying that, I have absolutely no ambition or will to be a manager or anything, principally because I don't want to be one. I'm doing them to gain a greater understanding of the game, how to coach, tactical set up, visions, all that shit.

Some of it is brilliant, and I'm really enjoying it. But mostly it's fucking hard, and I haven't got the time. By the time you get to 'A' level stuff (which I'n nowhere near) you've got to bring your own philosophy, style, and imprint to the thing. That's interesting to me. They teach you through all the basic stuff, and you're judged and accredited on how you transfer that into practise. The A level stuff which I've had a bit of exposure too look hard - that's the judge of whether you can be a manager/coach or not.

Right now we're going through 'situational approaches' which is quite interesting. They throw a game scenario and you've got to respond. I had one the other day about the opposition going down to 10 men after 15 minutes of the match, and I was supposed to show how I'd react to it on the whiteboard, at half-time, with adjustments and all that. I thought I did ok, but they were pretty scathing in their feedback.

Anyway, I'm rambling now. It's good stuff though.

Did Hodge Podge, the scrotum faced cunt pass the 'hard' A level stuff?

I suppose the obvious question is: how do players react to management vision? Most on here (myself included) think that on the whole, footballers are a bunch of thick cunts. (Present company and all that.) A manager can only manage to the level that the players can both grasp intellectually and execute physically and technically. Right? In that sense, management never seems like hard work because it rarely looks like anyone is doing a whole lot different in response to a given situation. Especially our lot of late.

no lie, last night I was going to type that digger was doing his best ryan impression by stating the obvious but opted to watch jackie brown instead.

Interesting stuff. I must say, as much as I enjoy watching a football match, I don't pick up half of what other people do. I never seem to notice if a player moves well off the ball or has good positioning etc. I can never tell who a player is either, unless it's bloody obvious.

I was listening to a liverpool podcast yesterday and a liverpool advocate said (paraphasing) if a fan at the ground/armchair can see the flaws in the liverpool team do you think it's possible that kenny with all his experience in football can't?

Rafa couldn't.

Fuck me I couldn't believe it - someone on Talksport talking some sense for a change - is there anybody who speaks more rationally on the radio, he also spoke out for Suarez during the negro crisis sticking his head above the parapet when very few lfc connected punters did. Great man - fucking unbelievable player (crap manager though)

Absolute genius of a player Tony. Poetry in motion watching Digger it was.

if you think about our long history and who would instantly transform us into a top 4 team, for instance souness in the middle or rush up front, for me it would be digger on the left. we'd top for challengers in 1 year and league challengers in two.

simple, Aldo and Barnes from that team makes up champs that is all it takes.

Now who the fuck can we buy to match those two

I'm not that sure that taking advice from a guy whose managerial experience consists of failing in one of the easiest jobs in football is a good idea.

I don't think that we are actually taking advice from Ryan though.

I didn't even read Ryan's post.

it's nice that he's learning how to know less about football.
