I get why Brendan got binned in the first place - the feeling that too many threads were being disrupted and too many posters were being put off.
However, with the benefit of hindsight - can we really say there was a marked improvement in threads not descending into petty tit-for-tat squabbles? Were there less vendettas and tedious ongoing spats? Have we had less of the really decent posters leaving us? Have we had hordes of quality new posters joining us?
The decision seemed right at the time - indeed, probably was right at the time - but in retrospect, did it deliver the kind of panacea that was hoped for?
The truth is, probably not. Sure, it helped to alleviate some of the tensions at the time, but in the long run I'm not entirely sure it had the desired impact. We've still lost the likes of Wizardry, grumpymonkey and Bunnyman, not to mention the ones I can't remember - for whatever reasons - and we've still seen endless thread after thread deteriorate into boring and repetitive arguments (albeit with less amusing insults). There have been a few notable additions, but any more than we would have otherwise expected? I'm not sure.
I think we have to accept some fundamental truths. Firstly, apart from porn and cat videos (ideally viewed separately), the internet was made for arguing with strangers. It's going to happen, it may as well be entertaining. If people can't handle arguing with strangers, there are various ways and means of avoiding it (one of which is step up your game and man the fuck up).
Secondly, 6CM may have reached some kind of equilibrium - is it going to grow significantly beyond where it is now? Could Jon, Mark and Ross et al be arsed with the amount of extra effort it would require to sustain it if it did? I don't know, and I suspect nor does anyone else - them included.
Thirdly, regardless of how many people's noses get bent out of shape by the fact, Brendan is part of the site's DNA - however many years ago it was we made the split and fucked Dunc off for good (still fond memories of "It's Oh So Quiet") - Brendan was there. In its original form, he was part of what made it what it was, back when we still had "insult of the year" and Nikeser was still selling Christmas trees. I still remember before it was even up and running, and still strictlyhushhush, as people were being surreptitiously canvassed as to what the new site should be about, one of the suggestions I made was that newbies had to run the gauntlet of being harangued by Brendan and Ryan, and if they gave as good as they got and survived in good humour then they were in. Not just because this is the internet and you shouldn't take anything - least of all yourself - too seriously, but also because behind the braggadocio and the bluster, both of them will demand a certain level of rigour in an argument and keep you honest - else perhaps do we run the risk of suffering fools gladly? Is it such a bad thing to be intellectually elitist?
Over the years there's been many instances of wailing and gnashing of teeth, how everything has changed now and it's all shit and stuff, with various attempts to pin the blame on one thing or another. At one time, that thing was Brendan, other times it's been something else - I think really these are attempts to externalise the inner angst that comes with something becoming old and habitual. It's like a relationship - in the early days it's mad sex everywhere, and excitement as you learn about each other and embark on an adventure. Eventually it becomes predictable and perfunctory. Familiarity breeds contempt.
In those early days, it still felt like an adventure. Now, as sure as a wife can predict exactly which anecdotes her husband will recall, we know too much about each other. We know where people stand on Rafa, on Lucas, on religion, on politics - we've heard it all before. The malaise we sense is within, as we gradually come to terms with the fact we're bored of ourselves.
Brendan's back. Sanitised slightly, and a bit out of practice. Those years in the wilderness have made him a shit peterhague. It kind of feels a little like trying to rekindle a flame by revisiting that place you went together when you were young. Let's see how it pans out.
And for the haters, just revel in the fact that he returned just in time to see Lucas granted the captaincy, and he'll never be able to outdo Ryan by getting banned from his own site
