I never saw him play, but I remember seeing him as a fixture on the sidelines with successive bosses.

TRUE LEGEND.

On the day he celebrates his 80th birthday, LFC TV will pay a unique tribute to bootroom legend Ronnie Moran by tracing the 49 trophy-filled years he spent with Liverpool Football Club this Friday.

'Bugsy Moran: A Tribute to Liverpool's Sergeant Major' will premiere on the Reds' official television channel at 7.30pm GMT on February 28 and reflect on the remarkable journey of an unsung hero.

The 30-minute programme recounts Moran's story from the young defender who initially signed professional forms at Anfield in 1952 right the way through to his retirement from the game in 1998.

In between, the men who know him best - including Kenny Dalglish, Kevin Keegan, Ian Rush and Phil Thompson - share their memories of a genuine institution who filled almost every role at the club and is among the most successful coaches of all time.

Uncompromising, insatiable and a gruelling taskmaster, during his time as a member of Liverpool's backroom staff, the Englishman oversaw 11 league championships, four FA Cups and four European Cups.

In the show, Dalglish comments: "I don't think anyone who worked with him will have anything other than total admiration and respect for him. It should never ever be underestimated his contribution to this football club."

Keegan, who worked closely with Moran throughout his time at Anfield, added: "Without the Ronnie Morans of this world you don't have a football club, certainly not a successful one like Liverpool. He becomes the foundation. He was there as a player, he was alongside all the successful managers, he is the one link to it all."

Thompson progressed through the Reds' reserves and later lifted the European Cup under the guidance of Moran - he said: "I think he's probably one of the most important people this football club has ever had."

The programme will air for the first time at 7.30pm on Friday on LFC TV and will be repeated during the following days. 'Bugsy Moran' will also be available on demand for LFC TV Online subscribers.

I know, but it's more the frailty in his voice. It's funny to think that as a kid I used to gaze at the pic of Shanks on his autobiography and I thought he must have been about 100, when it was actually taken when he was only 60. Ronnie is an amazing man. Melwood is his patch, everyone else is just passing through.

Can't add anything new to the great posts above, but wanted to join in the chorus of praise and thanks to one of the greatest club servants there have ever been.

Ronnie Moran YNWA.

Apparently, according to my dad, I met him and shook his hand. All I remember was Phil thomson's nose and emlyn's manic energy.

Would be great to win something elusive this year and get him in on the celebs

When I was at University I was mates with Brian Hall, who at that time was playing for Liverpool as an amateur. He told me that at a reserve match, he kept passing the ball in front of Ronnie Moran for him to run on to. Eventually Ronnie came over to him and said "Listen, son - when you are in the reserves you pass the ball TO the man and not in front of him!"

I only saw Ronnie Moran play for Liverpool once. Gerry Byrne had broken his collarbone in the 1965 Cup Final (he played the full match including extra time because it was before substitutes were allowed).

Ronnie who was by then a veteran, was drafted in to play left-back in the first leg of the European Cup semi-final at Anfield against Inter Milan.

Ronnie was up against Inter's right winger, the Brazilian Jair da Costa, who was lightening fast. As soon as Jair got the ball, he pissed past Ronnie as if he wasn't there. Our hearts sank at the prospect of what was to come.

However, by virtue of reading the game and thoughtful positioning, Ronnie soon had Jair in his pocket which contributed in no small measure to our 3-1 victory! 🙂

I love that he still turns up to Melwood for a cup of tea and a wander around. And that the likes of SG comes over and shows him the respect he's earned dozens of times over.
