Selling overrated Fernando Torres for £80m would be the best bit of business any club has ever done
By Derek McGovern 23/03/2010
Fernando Torres made no mistake from the spot at Old Trafford on Sunday - it was just Liverpool's bad luck that there was no ball on it at the time.
Sunday's latest show of petulance from the Spaniard underlines the frustrations at Anfield.
Fans have bemoaned the lack of back-up for Torres and Steven Gerrard, ignoring the fact they have been Liverpool's worst performers this season. It's got my back up.
It's heresy on Merseyside to question Torres. "Look at the goals he scores," you hear Kopites say, while wiping phlegm from your face.
But what have Liverpool won with Torres? For that matter, what did Atletico Madrid win with him? Think back to all those goals Ruud van Nistelrooy scored for Manchester United. Yet in his five years at Old Trafford United won just one championship, one FA Cup, and one League Cup, although Ruud won a seller at Sandown.
Their best Champions League effort during the Van Nistelrooy years was a semi-final in 2002. Yet they'd won the Champions League shortly before he arrived and won it again after he left. They've won the Premier League every year since his departure.
Goal-scorers are worshipped by fans but you don't win trophies unless they contribute elsewhere. Van Nistelrooy never did, nor does Torres.
There's talk that Torres will fetch £80million in the transfer market.
Selling him for that figure will be the best bit of business any club has ever done, apart from the one employing bunny girls.
