There's always disappointment, true. But there's sometimes at least one signing we can get excited by, with some justification. Although often they're shit, too. And there's even the odd one we don't know an awful lot about, or are unsure about, who turns out ace.

I think we will be quite happy this summer.

Amazing isn't it? Imagine there being just one variable consistently involved each time, despite a fairly frequent change of managers. Anyone would surmise that the managers might not be culpible for this repetition of events.

I'm pretty confident for once. We've got the money to spend and we've - finally - got a manager and coaching team I trust to know whom to go for., in circs.in which I'm pretty sure the manager will get the casting vote at the very least (I doubt he'd have come for less).

I agree, but I think we'll continue to see failed negotiations too, regardless of Klopp, because it's what happens.

Looks like he is staying at Munich...

That's fine until Carlo tells him he isn't going to play him.

Mark: undoubtedly, not least because we still have Ayre heading the negotiating team, but as you say such things are always going to happen and I'm happier than I've been in a long time that we have an overall set-up which can cope.

Klopps ability to spot a young talented player certainly makes me optimistic that some of the incoming transfers will turn out great.

The most important thing now is building a strong spine and I'm not to concerned about getting a "marquee" type of signing that most fans crave.
When we spend big it has usually been on the wrong type of player.
Getting a certain player just because he is available doesnt cut it anymore.
Need to get it right and build towards a balanced team.

I'm certain Klopp will do that.

I'd love to sign Gotze though. He ticks all the right boxes and could be available for a decent fee.
Several in the German media thinks yesterdays comments were tactical.
We can only wait and see..

It also makes me very optimistic with the changes Klopp is making to his backroom staff.
Bringing in World class talent there aswell.

Lets just hope we replace Achterberg...

Yup. Barry then Keane is how I remember it. I also remember Rafa talking about signing a great player from the Premier League who speaks English but isn't English.

Rafa wanted both and was promised the money to sign them but as you say Barry first and then Keane. You can also add that Rafa never wanted to sell Xabi. Instead he convinced Alonso to stay one more season. Parry signed up Keane first. We never had the money to sign both. We had to pay the £30m interest on the loan against the club.

Of course we'd like to sign great players that aren't priced out of our budget - and willing to come to us. It's a no brainer. And I'm sure we will. We got it right with Suarez and Coutinho and we can do it again. But it doesn't happen often, does it? It's incredibly difficult to convince top players to come to us, even if we're willing to spend a decent wage.

So we end up spending over the odds for pretty average players, and have done this repeatedly for the last 5 years. Benteke, Downing, Lallana, Carroll, Allen, Lovren. That's 150 million right there. And the sad part is that most of our fan base KNEW these players weren't anywhere near worth that money.

My point is this, instead of singing Stewart Downing, in hindsight I'd have signed some 6 million pound 20 year old Argentininan winger from the Spanish league.

This is going to sound crazy, but we need to start thinking like a small club to become a bigger club again. By that I mean simply being 'street smarter' with money, not pissing away millions on average, and putting higher focus on potential. i.e. Become more like Southampton of the last 4 years, but with a bit more status and money. And if that means ending a summer without a couple of 'marquee' signings that are actually pretty average, then so be it.

That's a long winded way of saying if we're going to spend big money on a player, spend it on player where we know we're getting quality and not overpaying for average. Suarez was a no brainer, Mkhitaryan would have been a no brainer, Goetze would have been a no brainer.

We had the chance to sign Mata instead of Downing but our manager wanted Downing, so, no Mata.

No Mata chose Chelsea over Arsenal.. so it was never going to happen...

Downing was a Realistic Target... though paying 20 million for him was the biggest joke imho

Thank God Arn is here to cut through the gossip, rumour and spin; to deliver us the truth about Liverpool Football Club via his network of Anfield insiders and a dog-eared copy of a Brian Reade book - which is the only personal item he is allowed in his padded cell in a secure mental facility just outside Malmo

I was as optimistic as @manwithnoname and @Judge Jules .

But Götze's non- signing has spooked me. I hope we go on to tie up Karius, Hector, Chilwell and even Zielinski soon before these "nailed on" signings somehow get their heads turned...

Oh, this old chestnut!
At least it confirms that it is indeed you, Tommy 🙂

It can't be me you know. I'm one of a number of people at the same time. It isn't my fault that this site is packed with lazy fans that moan moan moan instead of actually trying to find out what is the truth or not. It is even crazier than Est. I didn't think that was possible but not even me have right all the time.

How is life at ST?

Time after time they get pissed off when I post links that proves me right. That is fun 🙂 I still can't understand that we signed Downing instead of Mata. He wanted to join us but we turned him down and signed fucking Downing instead.

I still remember the old sad days when I and a lot of other fans e bombed the banks so they had to turn down Gillett and Hicks. That was fun, that was indeed fun because of the happy ending. We the fans and FSG saved the club.

It wasn't and still isn't fun reading an epic swindle, 44 months with a pair of comboys but it is a must read. It isn't a fantasy book written by me. It is a book packed with FACTS about a part of our history.

So now you know that it is me.

Am I right in thinking he's only got 1 more season on his contract?

In which case either Bayern will give him a big pay rise so he'll cost a fortune next summer or he'll let his contract run down so he can sign on a free somewhere. Cynically you'd think maybe he's having one more season to see how we get on under Klopp. But he'll probably sign a contract extension now.

I think I'm the only LFC fan on earth that was never really over the moon with Gotze potentially signing for Liverpool in the first place.

*ducks*

I can't say I'm particularly bothered he hasn't joined. He's been a bit part player at Bayern for a while now, looks like he becomes unfit quite easily and the only positive seems to be some romantic notion Klopp can turn him back into the player he was a few years ago.

Unfortunately our failure to win the EL and thereby secure a slot in the CL, is probably having repercussions already. Gotze being the first. He maybe hanging on for a year to see if Klopp can really work his magic.

I can see this affecting others too ... though since Klopp hasn't been known for chasing the 'big names' (not sure if he's ever had the cash before) then this may well be another Summer when Klopp has to revert to his tried and trusted buying relative unknowns.

Damn, my leech bites are bleeding again .. little fuckers.

Rummenigge has come out today and said that he's got to decide what he wants to do, and as much that he's been told that he'll be a bit-part player if he stays, and does he want to play all the time, or does he want to stay there and be a sub. It does seem like they're trying to get him out of there for some reason.

Kicker are claiming he was on the verge of agreeing a move to us. £19 million, with him earning £175k a week. Then he switched agents. Bayern I think would like the money rather than the player. Rummenigge's quotes today about Mario needing to consider how much playing time he wants could be interpreted as them urging him to leave. That's how some are spinning it.
