We can't send him on loan. He's too good and skillful. This looks to be a stunning piece of business and inevitably he will be our best defender eventually.

The 18-year-old, who joined the Reds from Charlton Athletic last month, has caught the eye of the manager in pre-season training and turned in an outstanding display at left-back during Friday’s 2-1 win over Brisbane Roar in Australia.
Rodgers told his post-match press conference: “He’s staying. I’ve seen enough in this period; you judge young players, I always bring them in and over pre-season have a good idea of whether we’re going to keep them or not.
“Seeing him, in particular close at hand and his personality – he’ll be staying, he’ll get games.
“He’s only 18 years of age, but seeing him play at left-back for the first time, he looked an outstanding athlete and a really good footballer. I’ve seen him at centre-half and at right-back, but I wanted to see him at left-back – and I thought he was outstanding.”
It’s not just in the full-back berths where Rodgers sees Gomez providing competition to his teammates – the manager feels the England U19 international has the qualities required to operate centrally.
“Gomez has played there a lot of his career,” continued the boss. “We took him in from Charlton where he played as a centre-half as a two, played in a back three and he’s also played as a right-back, so he’s got all the tools to play across the back four. You saw him tonight play at left-back – he’s a big talent.”

Exciting that we may have actually signed a great player at a bargain price. Hope he's on a long contract.

Some players get thrown in the deep end at an early age and never look remotely out of their depth. They take to it like they have been playing first team football all their lives, this kid looks like one of those players, you dont stifle players like that you have to let them play until the inevitable dip in form then you take them out of the side to protect them. I hope to see alot of this kid over the course of the season. Really hope to see Ilori get a chance this year too

Okay, we've got to bear in mind the standard of the opponents in the two pre-season games so far, but still, he looks really, really good. Where did this guy come from? All last year or the year before, the talk has been about Will Hughes (bleah, he's way overrated), Patrick Roberts, Dele Alli, and them boom - we land England's no. 1 left back for the next decade out of nowhere. Killer ninja deal.

@studsup Thanks, OK now I know I didn't dream that performance.

Bloody hell, the lad's got it all ; strength, vision, passing ( I love the way when he's closed down that he plays the ball into space for his team mate so they don't get put under pressure right away), crossing, pace, dribbling skills (!), confidence and he's even got Sterling's shooting down pat. It doesn't matter he hasn't played against PL teams yet .. he played 20+ (25?) games in the Championship and that's pretty much as tough as they come for central defenders, no quarter given there.

What a future I think this lad's got. He's fucking ace !

Playing him out of position already....

It's way too early to be getting carried away but he's made a great start to his LFC career and I'm really pleased for him. The thing that's impressed me most about him is that he seems very focused and determined with what he's doing. It would be easy to come into a big club on much higher wages than you were previously on and think you've made it and let your talent do all the hard work rather than put real effort in but he looks like he wants to make the most of the opportunity.
He's only been with the squad a couple of weeks and has impressed the manager enough that he's no longer being considered for a loan to another club to learn his trade. That's impressive enough in itself.
Hopefully he can put pressure on the whole of the back line for their place as he's obviously big enough to be a natural centre half and if he can play left back as a right footer then you would expect him to be able to play right back as well.
The next step for him is to do well in a competitive game.

The encouraging performances of Joe Gomez has also convinced the club he will compete for a position in defence immediately [Chris Bascombe]

He looked the part the other night.

Wouldn't be surprised to see him start at Stoke ahead of that train wreck Moreno.
