Glenjo the winger?

With us being well-stocked at both full-back positions now, it's unlikely Johnson gets into the first team unless there's an injury situation. Now I know it's been mentioned before, but is it time we gave the Glenjo-as-a-winger-argument a serious thought?

We're still a team largely devoid of pace and creativity, and it'd be a great waste to not use him at what he's good at. I've never been up for this as I'm generally not a fan of converting full-backs into wingers, but the more I think about it, the more I think there's a chance of it being a success. One of the key points really being that Glenjo's really someone who's good going forward not because he's someone who takes advantage of bursting forward on the overlap but because of his ability on the ball. He's the sort who seems to enjoy bringing the ball up and running at players. That'd be a very useful trait on the wing, and not having the responsibility of worrying how to defend might just bring the best out of him.

So any chance of this happening? It'd be quite a story, and it'd be great for Kenny the manager, if he could get Glenjo could re-invent himself in this role.

He has played there, but (a) not often and (b) a long time ago, besides which bringing the ball forward from fullback is a very different matter from receiving it halfway up the pitch and having less time and space in which to do something with it. Some folk will ask "what have we got to lose". The answer to that is: Magic's form and confidence if the experiment fails, which I suspect it would. No thanks.

In which case you may aswell put him on the transfer list because at £20m, he's hardly gonna wanna stay.

So be it. I'd rather play someone whos best in that position. Maxi offers more and doesn't just bomb forward at RM and kelly is a better RB.

How do you know what Johnson offers at RM without trying him there?
[/quote]

because he's played there for pompey and didn't impress me. I don't think his crossing ability, close control, or mentality is right for the RM slot.

We should do it just to put it to bed

though i'm against it, i'd be up for it to shut it the fuck up

His fee shouldn't guarantee him a place though.

Apart from having a "good engine", what exactly is G.Johnson good at?

But wasn't that the season in which he played really well and attracted our interest (and eventual purchase)?

It was also quite some time ago.

Fuck knows, never overly been sold on him. Others have and that's fair enough, but as far as im concerned we play our best stuff with kelly at rb, and more intelligent players further up

Happy to try it once though to put the argument to bed
But odd though that the only team to try it consistently was a creatively starved pompey team

That's a bit harsh on him dontcha think?

He's good a good turn of pace, he can beat a man, he's good with both feet, he can score with both feet, he has a reasonable cross . . .

To say he's got a good engine and nothing else is a bit mean

I just don't rate him single. For a rb he's too shite at defending and i think as a re people are expecting the same kind of runs, but you wouldn't get them. Running from deep means that you'll be relatively unmarked as their lb will focus on your rw. If Johnson played rw he'd be marked out the game

Fair doos mate, I don't think we can make any judgements until we see him pushed further up, and FWIW I voted Kelly at RB.

That said, IMO there have been a few games (not so much now with the current personnel) where Magic has been *the* creative outlet

I expect him to be shit at rw, but he should prove that himself and be played there

To say he'd be marked out of the game is a big assumption.

He can beat a man one-on-one better than a lot of other players, so I'd like to see us have a go with him there.

He's not an attacking winger.
Glenjo would do well in 5-3-2, I'd like to see us try it now that we've got Enrique on the left.

Glenjo is one of our best footballers. I think we should do our best to accommodate him in the team. I wouldn't be averse to playing him wide right - that's where I always saw him ending up when he was at Chelsea. He's got all the attributes to succeed there, and he's really not very good at defending, so I'm quite surprised it's not been tried before now.

Why do people think Johnson's not our first choice right-back anymore?
Kelly's only played a handful of games.
OK, he's universally rated, but lets not count Johnson out.
Still our first choice when fully fit.

Why should a defender that can't defend be further up the pecking order than a defender that can?

Kelly defends better.
Pace.
Great at overlaps.
Height.
Great cross.

The one thing Johnson has over Kelly is close ball control and perhaps 1 or 2 goals per season. But is that enough to keep him as number 1 choice?
I hope not.

It's great to see people talking sense over Glenjo. He just doesn't defend well enough to play in a top team at RB.
