[article=http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/football/teams/liverpool/10329449/Liverpool-owners-FSG-prepared-to-delay-entering-contract-talks-with-England-full-back-Glen-Johnson.html]Liverpool are prepared to delay contract talks with defender Glen Johnson, despite the England full-back entering the final two years of his Anfield contract.

Johnson, who is recovering from an ankle injury, may have to wait until the end of the season before there is any approach from the Liverpool board to negotiate about a renewal.

Established players tend to consider themselves in line for new terms once they reach the final 24 months of a contract, but Liverpool’s American owners, Fenway Sports Group, are less inclined to do so with players who will be over 30 when their deal ends.

Even club captain Steven Gerrard had to wait until he had just a year left before agreement was reached, and Johnson will find himself in similar territory. Johnson will be 31 when his contract expires.

Another complication regards salary, with Johnson among the club’s top earners.

During the course of their reign, FSG have challenged the logic of players expecting to be paid more when they go beyond their 30th birthday, at a point when many are considered to be past their peak.

Whether Johnson would be prepared to accept a deal which offered extra years but no salary increase – or even reduced terms – could become a factor.

For Liverpool’s part, they see no rush in heading to the negotiation table, but it is certainly a bit of a risk given how highly Johnson is regarded.

He is a Champions League calibre player at a club who are not in Europe, and rivals are sure to be alerted as he approaches the final 18 months of his deal.

“It’s something the club will take up at the right time. I’m not sure where it’s at,” said manager Brendan Rodgers.
“Glen is the type of player you don’t realise what you’re missing until he is not in the team. He was outstanding against Manchester United so it will be great when we get him back.

"He’s got the cast off his foot now and he is working hard to be back in the next few weeks.”

Rodgers, meanwhile, says Luis Suárez is fully aware he owes Liverpool and the supporters his full commitment when he makes his much-anticipated return from suspension against Manchester United in the Capital One Cup third-round tie on Wednesday.

“I’m sure he does,” said Rodgers. “You’ll find out that once he gets that strip on he’ll work his socks off.
“He’s received nothing but affection and love from the supporters. They deserve no less than 100 per cent and, knowing Luis, that’s what he’ll give them.”[/article]

Mirror claims he's earning £139,000-a-week but in the same article says "Johnson’s contract, which he signed when he joined from Portsmouth in 2009, expires next June", conveniently overlooking the extension he signed in 2011.

Yep - there's no way he should be offered improved terms.

He should defo not be getting a payrise. If we could keep him and cut his pay, that'd be the best option.

Can we really find a better player for less than GJs salary, increased or not?
Not with our mixed transfer record and since we have had trouble signing established top tier players since being out of CL, we have to go for emerging players and the results have been mixed so far.
Rogers is right, Glen has been hugely missed since he's been out and the back 4 has looked hugely imbalanaced and one of the reason is due to Glen beig out.

We're missing him because we don't have another right back.

It's not as if Right Backs are "that" expensive - he could effectively be replaced for a reasonable amount.

I think Zabaleta, Ivanovic, Sagna, Coleman, Walker are better than him off the top of my head. And the added bonus of all those minus walker, is they can do defending aswell.

From the little I have seen of them I wouldn't mind making a bid for both of Southampton's current full backs.

walker is overrated - Ukranians were all over him. Magic is hugely underrated - he leaves and we end up conceding int he league

Zabaleta and Ivanovic are very dependable and consistent. You're pushing it with the last three though.

Johnson has his faults but getting the balance right in the fullback positions is pretty tough these days.

For every couple of games Johnson performs very well in as an attacking threat, there's a game where he's a complete liability at the back, and often costs us a result. Typically he's somewhere in the middle, but I don't know if that justifies the wages he's on.

Riether was quite good last year as well, not the sexiest name by any stretch of the imagination, but he's at least of comparable value when you consider Johnson's wages.

We should hold the cards in the next contract renewal discussion. Which other team would swoop for him?

Ivanovic is horrendous on the ball. Horrendous. Opposition teams st up to allow him the ball he's that fucking bad.

And in no way are Sagna and Seamus Coleman better than Johnson. Kyle Walker sits on the bench for England, while Johnson plays.

Zabaleta I'll give you.

Kyle Walker's shite, and you know how much I rate Johnson. We've missed him because we don't have another dependable or natural fullback who's good enough.

I like Johnson, but the main reason the defence has looked imbalanced is because we don't have another decent right back. If we did, we would miss Johnson much less.

This defensive liability arguments a bit of a myth isn't it? 5th meanest defence last season, 3rd meanest the season before.

It's clear we don't score enough though and that's where we miss Glen Johnson, he gives us more attacking options than say Toure or Kelly.

I expect the club will offer him a new contract, though whether it's on the terms he wants is another matter; as has been pointed out not many clubs will offer him terms like his alleged current one.

As a matter of interest, in which games was Johnson solely responsible for a defeat?
