I'm more nervous when the opposition has the ball and Insua's pointlessly trying to catch up.

I don't hold out much hope for him. We should hold onto Aurelio as a good-ish, versatile squaddie and buy a LB in the summer. Fuck Insua and Dossena off.

And Lucas.

And Voronin.

And Babel.

He's actually capable on the ball, his touch is good, and he's decent at retaining possession. The awry positional sense can be worked upon by decent coaching, gaining experience, and through continually playing with good defenders. Being short osn't the absolute end of the world - Evra, Neville, Cole, Jones, etc etc have all made it as full-backs regardless of their size.

His pace (and massive lack of it) is an enormous problem. He's wondefully slow, and most worryingly - he nearly always seems to be caught flat-footed, so the second anyone touches the ball past him, he's fucked. There's just not an awful lot can be done about that, cos he's continually going to get caught out. It'll invariably mean that our central defenders will have to spend most of their 90 minutes worrying about to cover for him, which can strecth the fuck out of us.

He'll get better of course, but to the levels we need him to be? Doubtful. In games like Monday night's where the opposition are little more than cannon-fodder, you need attacks and pressure coming from all areas of the park. Unfortunatly everything came down our right (due in part to the excellence of Johnson of course) but also because we couldn't get in behind them on Brum's right-side. It left us horribly unbalanced and predictable really. Losing Riera didn't help, having a slow-arsed left-back was a major problem though.

They'll have to Ebayed.

Quite possibly the most boring 5 pages I've ever read on here. I need to type something to justify the time spent on it.

Johnson - tremendous, as expected.

Insua - given the leg up that being Argie and coming from Boca does for a player. If he was English/British/Irish, he wouldn't have got this run in the team. Quite often looks ropey at the mo but has time on his side. If Aurelio wasn't made of dust I wouldn't have Insua anywhere near the first team. But, like I said, he's only 20, and we do moan when they don't get a chance. I'm just waiting for the day he plays a blinder and we have a 30 page thread about how he's the best in the World (it will happen).

True, there's not a lot that can be done for his outright pace although losing afew kilo's wouldn't hurt him any.

There is a bit could be done for his agility though and that's almost as important as pace in his position. The point of him being flat footed is very accurate - but this can be worked on. If he was in there doing some high interval work in tight areas mixed with plenty of flexibility work it would improve him immensely.

I think people like Insua would improve markedly by playing tennis or squash. Navratilova was one of the quickest players around a tennis court but while Steffi could get through the 50m in under 6 seconds, Martina rarely ever broke 7. But she was so agile it meant she had changed direction, balanced and running while most players were still looking for their feet. The result was she seemed amazingly quick around the court.

This is what Insua needs and with the sort of training drills they do for tennis players he'd improve markedly. He's never going to out pace Ronaldo over 60 yards or whatever but it's generally in those first few steps that Insua get's done and with better agility he could keep up duing that vital period.

Is this a Johnson or Insua thread? ???
[/quote]

It's a Joshua thread, have you posted in the Torrard thread yet?

Don't get too confused about the Maschagger thread it's actually not about two of our players it relates to carra's brother and John Terry's Ma.

Maybe we should play Johnson at LB and Kelly at RB.

the whole purpose of a player like johnson is the likes of kuyt can come inside and score. johnson is a full back if the right midfielder isn't/can't do the job then fuck him off and get someone that can.

Ooopss so it is ok also regarding Leivra and BenO'Kite?

I was arguing with a Chelsea supporting mate of mine that he was world class. I think Glen is fantastic. Way better that I ever thought he was or could be. A bargain at £17m.

Yes. Lawro (quelle surprise) said in the Mirror today that Johnson's great but we didn't need him as we already had Arbeloa and therefore should have bought a striker. This sort of idiotic nonsense just goes round and round and round! Johnson plus a striker could have made such a difference.

Hindsight is such a great thing, isn' t it? I wonder what Lawro would have said if Torres wouldn't have had those injuries all the time.

it's slightly annoying when people suggest holding onto players that want out. when a player wants out, you sell, simple as that.

It's not even hindsight. It's recognising that Arbeloa wanted to leave and we're so short of cash every £2-3M is needed. I have some sympathy who suggest RB wasn't a £17M priority in the summer, but given what Johnson has delivered so far, I think they're guilty of underselling the role. And sometimes when very good, young, dedicated players become available and want to join your club, you have to take your chance and grab them.

I wanted Johnson before when he was cheaper but I'm delighted he's here.

johnson certainly has come a long way since diouf absolutely handed him his arse to the point where he had to be subbed off.
