ANDREA DOSSENA is ready to turn down a move to Juventus – because he thinks that Liverpool can finally win the Premier League next season.

Italian left-back Dossena, 27, has been strongly linked with a move to Juve after struggling to earn a regular place in the Liverpool team following a £7m move from Udinese.
But he wants to stay at Anfield because he believes Cristiano Ronaldo’s £80m move to Real Madrid has opened up next season’s title race. Dossena started just 12 league games last term as Rafa Benitez preferred Brazilian defender Fabio Aurelio for most of the season.

But Dossena, currently playing for Italy in the Confederations Cup, reckons he would be mad to leave just when Liverpool are on the verge of a title breakthrough for the first time in 20 years. He said: “I learned what the boss wants from me and I hope next season is better than last season.

“I never said I wanted to go away from Liverpool. I’m happy in Liverpool and I want to stay. Journalists say ‘you come back to Italy’. I want to stay in Liverpool.†Dossena believes that Liverpool have an outstanding chance of being crowned champions in 2010 now that United have lost star man Ronaldo to Real Madrid. The defender, who scored in Liverpool’s famous 4-1 victory over champions United at Old Trafford in March, said: “Ronaldo going is the difference, I hope.

“We have to continue the same as last season because we weren’t 20 points behind Manchester United – only four.
“There’s not a lot of difference between us and them. And now Manchester United have lost Cristiano Ronaldo maybe that’s better for us.â€

Meanwhile, Liverpool and Aston Villa last night got the green light to bid for Standard Liege captain Steven Defour.
Martin O’Neill and Rafa Benitez are both keen on the Belgium international midfielder who inspired Standard to their second consecutive title. And £15m-rated Defour is eager to move to the Premier League – even though his club are reluctant to sell.

O’Neill wants the 21-year-old prodigy to replace Gareth Barry who left for Manchester City.
Benitez was impressed by Defour during Liverpool’s Champions League clashes with Standard last season.
He sees him as the ideal replacement if Javier Mascherano or Xabi Alonso leave.

From the star but some direct quotes. Rafas not going to be happy i'm sure he's banking on Dossenna leaving in raising the funds for Johnston.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I echo that sentiment.

Defour is a good player though.. I have to say... a key player for liege

Could he cut it in the Premiership ?.... I'm not so sure....

Having said that felliani for the bitters has done extremly well..

rafa will just have to tell him he's being sold then. there's probably a compensation clause somewhere.

He'll get over it..

And to all those whinging about the price, Pompey owe us 7mill from Crouhcy, and the sale of Dross and Arbeloa (with only a year on his contract) will outlay this, so in reality its replacing Arby with Johnson and getting Dross off the wage bill..
Do people still not realise if they owe us 7 million and if we write it off against the transfer its still 7million we've also paid?

In reality, no it's not, because that 7M they still owe us can't be considered free money. How many times?
Precisely.

Selling Dossena and others isn't free money either because we want to sell them anyway. The only thing that brings down the Johnson fee is money we get for Arbeloa, who would be staying if we weren't signing Johnson.

And another thing that occured to me was that it seems to be assumed that all the money we get for selling players is our money. We are owed money for Crouch so its a fair assumption that whenever we sell a player we probably still owe money on at least a few of them!

Dossena should think carefully about making statements like that.

If Benitez wants you gone its wise to go, ask Jermain Pennant

I think rafa will tell 'the doss' he will play zero minutes this coming season, that will soon change his mind. If doss thinks rafa is joking when preseason starts and he isn't involved he'll soon see sense. also didn't he hand in a transfer request?

Especially if Torres keeps smashing in goals - that's £6M in clauses right there.

Not that I mind, like.

Well yes he will, but if Dossena is really wanting to stay because he thinks we will win the title and he wants to be part of it then he is kidding himself.

Pennant had the last laugh of sorts but didn't exactly improve his reputation and being frozen out at Liverpool didn't help his career. If he just wants money that's fine, but I suspect that Dossena has more to lose and probably actually wants to play.

Exactly its a world cup year so if Dossenna wants to be part of Italy's plans he'll have to playing first team football. Hopefully he sees the bigger picture.

According to Danish TV2 Johnson's name appeared on the official last night in the drop-down list over player-names to choose from when you want to personalize your new jersey.

Anyone seen this?

I reckon Johnson-shirtsales won't exactly go through the roof then if that was the only window of opportunity.

Hopefully he'll sign and we'll get another chance then.

Juve bid 'would interest Dossena'

Dossena has made 26 appearances in his first season at Andield
Liverpool defender Andrea Dossena is happy at Anfield but would consider a move to Juventus, his agent has said.
The 27-year-old Italy international has been linked with a return to Serie A after just one season in England but no offer has yet been made.
"If they (Juventus) decide to target my client then we would evaluate the offer," said Roberto La Florio.
"He is happy at Liverpool but Juventus is Juventus, and he's a little nostalgic for Italy."
Left-back Dossena, who is under contract with Liverpool until June 2012, joined the club in the summer of 2008 from Udinese.

He had his medical with us last night, according to The Times.

We pay 5M up front, and the rest over the length of his contract.

5mil up front is a good deal.

That's a good deal then 'payment wise' ... It's a good first signing, and let's hope there's 1 more big splash.

It's about time we signed someone.
Yes, what with all the signings Arsenal, Man United and Chelsea have made, we were in danger of being left behind.

The deal is structured with us paying 5 mill the two first years. 7 mill is from the money they still owe us, and will of course stop those payments.
Thats a good payment plan, at least for the transfer budget. We should be able to make a 17-22 mill signing more aswell.

Tevez, Silva or Robben.

It really doesn't make too much difference - does anyone really think we are going to over extend ourselves and go out and splash more than we had planned just because we paid (effectively) 12M up front and the balance in installments ? That payment scheme seems to be just par for the course for any large money transfer.

Chelsea have matched Liverpool's bid for England star Glen Johnson.

Portsmouth accepted a ?17.5million bid from Liverpool earlier this week and the 24-year-old looked set to seal a move to Anfield.

However, Pompey chief Peter Storrie has confirmed the club have also now agreed terms with Chelsea - Johnson's former club.

The in-demand full-back now has a decision to make, with both sides keen to tie up a deal this week.

"The matter will come to a conclusion at the beginning of next week. I do not have a preference over the move, it is up to Glen," Storrie said.

"The deals are almost identical so it really is down to him and what club he prefers, which one is going to pay him more money.

"Glen wants to play regularly in the Champions League, he has got himself back in the England side so I understand that. Sometimes you have to be fair to players."

Storrie admits that Johnson needs to be playing Champions League football next season in order to secure his place in Fabio Capello's starting XI - with the World Cup finals now less than 12 months away.

"It's a big year for him with the World Cup coming up," he continued.

"Playing Champions League football will make him an even better player than he is today."
