I guess there'll be no more Maradona comments from the Micks.

In fairness though the Paddies deserve a big hand for that performance.
I agree with the view that most of this thread has been just banter which is fair enough.

But I do have a problem with the use of that and its not the first time that the poster has shown his true colours.
Yes, if he isn't an unpleasant racist twat, he's as close to being one as you can get

Is Mick offensive to an Irishman Niall ? Why is that ? I never thought (and I'm not trying to be offensive here just inquisitive) it was just another name for the Irish along the same lines of Paddy. Similar to what scouser is Liverpudlians, Cockney is to Londoners etc...

I'm not sure, but I think the fact that "H" said it may have been key.

Because he sometimes does seem to be a bit of a racist twat.

I'll be honest - he's not a poster I've ever paid much attention to.
Me either, but the posts I have noticed have been pretty unpleasant

OK. I'll pay more attention in the future.

I wouldn't bother

In my part of the world anyway the use of the word Mick when describing an Irishman is seen to be an insult whereas the use of the word Paddy is taken in much the way you guys are referred to as scousers.

And I'm quite sure H knew that full well when he used it.

That's fucking bizarre - they're both just Christian names. Was the original Mick a cunt, and the original Paddy a nice bloke?

I may be wrong but I think that Mick was seen as a derogatory name for the Irish navvies working in England, whereas Paddy was a general name given to describe the Irish in Ireland. If that makes sense. Im not sure it does to be honest

I haven't been on here 'giving it loads'. I've merely posted a few comments during and after the game as to why I was supporting the French, but as people don't like it, I get called 'cunt' and 'racist'. Laughable really.
On a number of occasions in this thread you have stated that you dont like the Irish. That in my view makes you a racist. Personally I couldnt give a flying fuck about you or your views. Im just pointing out what you are. Of course like most racists you either dont think you are one or deny that you are one.
But the Irish aren't a race.
He maybe being anti-Irish, but racist? No.
He could be accused of being a Xenophobic but racist? I think that's a big stretch. Especially as he's expanded on what he meant by "hate". Also I've lost count of the times where and a losing England team have been the subject of jests, jokes and also downright vitriol by some of the sanctimonious ones who now want sympathy (not you ILD 😉 ).

If you dish it out, you have to be able to take it. Like I've said before, its my opinion that the English care less about the Irish losing than the English do about the Irish losing. Unless we are playing each other of course - which won't be happening this summer.... 😉

Actually my understanding of it is that it comes from the "Mc" common in Irish surnames. It was used to describe " Thick Micks" who were only capable of manual jobs when emigrating abroad.

Whereas even us Irish refer to ourselves as Paddies

Domanech doesn't deserve to be in a job. If nothing else, Ireland needed to qualify so as to force the French FA into sacking him.

Lassana Diarra's performance should make those advocating him as a Masher replacement think twice - headless chicken act once again.

But then again, he was playing next to the invisible Alou Diarra. I wasn't convinced he existed when he was on our books and I'm still not convinced now. A mythical creature is Alou.
I said it all earlier in the thread Keni. The Alou Diarra carrer is a strange one.

Lassanna Diarra got away with some blatant fouls today. How did he go so long without being booked? Was he even?
-Alou Diarra his namesake does nothing of real note. Lass seems to marshal the defence, link up play etc. Maybe Alou Diarra is doing selfless work off the ball but I didnt notice it. Captain of his club too, god he has come a long way from the time he was on our book.

Spion whilst I agree with a lot of what you say I think you are slightly missing the point. There are two separate parts in this thread. One is the good natured banter between Irish and non Irish fans. Thats good fun and Im all for it. It happens all the time and as you rightly point out, what goes around comes around.

The other part is the underlying anti Irish thing that certain (a minority thankfully) individuals have. If someone says that they hate or dislike the Irish as a generalisation, I as an Irishman find that offensive. I dont care if they qualify it by saying its not real hate or dislike.

I dont have any problem whatsoever in a non Irish fan supporting France last night. Its entirely their choice. However, when they say they support France because they dislike or hate the Irish, then I find that insulting.

It isnt really that much of a fuss Gene.
I was just pointing out that I do find the term somewhat offensive others don't fair enough. The poster who used it has a rather intense dislike for us Irish which he is not shy in putting forward.

And as the new rules do say refer to the post not the poster or something like that.

As I have said in a PM to people, saying you hate the Irish football team and laughing when they lose is one thing, as this happens to the English team more often than not. But saying you hate the Irish (not in the context of football) is provocative and uncalled for.
And if Mick is offensive to some, then I suggest we leave that alone too. Unless it is me or Livvy of course.

That would make me a Mick then. I've an Irish surname beginning with Mc.

We'd like to avoid anything that could be deemed as highly offensive mate - anything that exceeds the realms of good humour or banter. It's a tricky one to determine at times.
