He is a top player. He's made 300 appearances in the Premier League. He's played 34 times for England. He's played in a Europa cup final.

Don't get me wrong, he's not as good as Bale, but then he's costing us £6m over 4 years so he isn't going to be is he? Make no mistake though, as far as wide players go in the Premier League, when he left Villa two years ago, he was one of the best around. Just because Dalglish didn't know what to do with him, and Rodgers didn't fancy him doesn't make him not a 'top player'

Absolutely. If Downing comes we'll have signed 3 first-team players with 132 international caps between them. If I was a supporter of another Premier League club , I'd find that sort of business intimidating

We on the other hand have a batch of our squad of players who are English Internationals and are seasoned Premiership pros. My money is on the fans of the likes of Norwich, West Brom, Swansea, Villa & Saints will be silently gutted that their teams hadn't bid for the likes of Cole, Downing, Jarvis, Carroll

I for one am happy with Downing signing. His time at Liverpool wasn't great but I firmly believe Sam will have him back to his best in the near future and for him personally

I'll welcome Downing, and every time a cross is whipped onto Carroll's head and smashed into the back of the net, I'll search out every Liverpool fan and remind them how much of a loss they made.

Some sample quotes from the West Ham forums there.
BLESS...

Can someone please sum up NET spend if these figures are indeed right?

I wish him luck btw, never quite justified the fee or the amounts of game he managed to get under his belt, but also showed glimpses of a good player. Not reliable as a week in week out player for a team trying to get back in to the top 4 why this makes sense.

I had a crummy Day. Now, it's got so much brighter. yes he was decent last season blah blah blah, but more importantly, bye bye mediocrity. AND 8M! WOW!

IF he goes for 8mill then we will be +6.5mill up for this window

Great news as it stands. But if we don't get anyone else in, we're gonna look a little silly. Then again, he's shit anyways. So who really cares.

i'll care if we end up playing henderson there or something. as shit as downing is (always bearing in mind we paid 20 mill), he needs replacing.

He definitely needs replacing. I'm just not holding out much hope of said replacement actually coming in.

I am far from being a fan of super Stu.
But the reality is that he was a consistent starter in the first eleven in the second half of last season.
As much as he needs to be upgraded and improved on, until we have that player in place, I won't be popping the champagne at his departure.

Exactly. Didn't Rodgers say a week or two ago that the squad signings are complete and the next phase is signing a few experienced first team players? Since then we appear to be close to success in getting rid of Skrtel and Downing, they aren't great but Downing in particular played a significant part in our side last season. I'd also like to see some quality incoming players before getting excited about anyone leaving.

Yup, had him in my starting XI against Stoke. I have no idea who Rodgers is playing on the right on Saturday. Possibly Ibe or Aspas.

You won't be popping the champagne because you're on the beer instead.
