European Super League

From what I understand of it (which isn’t much, admittedly) I can’t say I particularly like the idea. However, it’s a situation without good guys really isn’t it?

Yes the clubs are being greedy, but the FA, UEFA, FIFA etc are all just as self-serving and just as greedy, so it’s hard to have a huge amount of sympathy for them either.
No need to have sympathy with either UEFA or the breakaway clubs - just sympathise with the losers ... fans

Doubt this will happen. I reckon its a tactic for the traditional big teams to get a bigger slice of pie because they can't financially compete with the Chelsea's, City's and PSGs and they don't like it. If it does happen football is fucked and I'm in Hal's club too.
It all about the usual status quo having more of a say in decisions and how money is distributed..

I think this is more of a tactic to put on the premier League than just UEFA tbf..

The Premier League would be just as appealing as the Scottish premiership without the big 6.. This is the big clubs way of saying. Right.. give us a bigger share of the say with the votes and finances or this proposed breakaway may become something even more..

Noise was made earlier this season about the bigger clubs having more of say about this the PL should be run and tbh..

Big established PL clubs are not liking clubs that have less time in PL having the same share of the votes and revenue
.

Assuming that most people are against the idea in principal here is another question.
If the super league were to go ahead would you prefer Liverpool to be in it or still be in a reduced English league?

Support the club in whichever shit hole they end up in. Honestly, the reaction from thr various orgs and governments seems a bit scary to me....

The one upshot is all the woke virtue signalling in football is getting a dose of capitalism at its finest. Their liberal knee taking tears and bleeding heart routines are utterly fucking irrelevant in the face of the us dollar. I think that's why they're so pissed, rather than sky suddenly giving a shit about the same fans they wanted to charge £25 a game to.

Fuck them. After they are done crying they will bend the knee and give us what we want, more of our own fan's money handed back to their club.

Sky don't give a shit. They are probably hastily agreeing PPV exclusive access to all games.

Reading elsewhere it seems that the major clubs have built up a considerable mistrust of UEFA.
Basically while they are taking all the risks during the covid crisis, buying players, paying wages, staging games and taking financial hits, UEFA are still taking their slice of the cake without exposing themselves the way clubs do.
I still reckon its a play to get more input into the upcoming revised version of the Champions League and some sort of compromise will be reached.
I doubt if it will please many fans but who are we in the whole scheme of things.

I hope this is a political manoeuvre. Would be in bad taste but not as bad taste as actually considering doing it.

I'll be mortified by us if we go along with this.

I don’t get what the huge issue is. The current structure is broke. Just look at the World Cup. Fuck them all off and start again.

Liverpool Football Club can confirm that we have joined Europe's leading clubs in agreeing to form a new competition, the European Super League.

A joint statement released by all 12 founding clubs can be found below, with further information being made available in due course.
We are committed to working with all stakeholders, particularly supporters, as plans for the competition develop.

Twelve of Europe’s leading football clubs have today come together to announce they have agreed to establish a new mid-week competition, the Super League, governed by its Founding Clubs.
AC Milan, Arsenal FC, Atlético de Madrid, Chelsea FC, FC Barcelona, FC Internazionale Milano, Juventus FC, Liverpool FC, Manchester City, Manchester United, Real Madrid CF and Tottenham Hotspur have all joined as Founding Clubs. It is anticipated that a further three clubs will join ahead of the inaugural season, which is intended to commence as soon as practicable.
Going forward, the Founding Clubs look forward to holding discussions with UEFA and FIFA to work together in partnership to deliver the best outcomes for the new League and for football as a whole.
The formation of the Super League comes at a time when the global pandemic has accelerated the instability in the existing European football economic model. Further, for a number of years, the Founding Clubs have had the objective of improving the quality and intensity of existing European competitions throughout each season, and of creating a format for top clubs and players to compete on a regular basis.
The pandemic has shown that a strategic vision and a sustainable commercial approach are required to enhance value and support for the benefit of the entire European football pyramid. In recent months extensive dialogue has taken place with football stakeholders regarding the future format of European competitions. The Founding Clubs believe the solutions proposed following these talks do not solve fundamental issues, including the need to provide higher-quality matches and additional financial resources for the overall football pyramid.
Competition Format
  • 20 participating clubs with 15 Founding Clubs and a qualifying mechanism for a further five teams to qualify annually based on achievements in the prior season.
  • Midweek fixtures with all participating clubs continuing to compete in their respective national leagues, preserving the traditional domestic match calendar which remains at the heart of the club game.
  • An August start with clubs participating in two groups of ten, playing home and away fixtures, with the top three in each group automatically qualifying for the quarter finals. Teams finishing fourth and fifth will then compete in a two-legged play-off for the remaining quarter-final positions. A two-leg knockout format will be used to reach the final at the end of May, which will be staged as a single fixture at a neutral venue.
As soon as practicable after the start of the men’s competition, a corresponding women’s league will also be launched, helping to advance and develop the women’s game.
The new annual tournament will provide significantly greater economic growth and support for European football via a long-term commitment to uncapped solidarity payments which will grow in line with league revenues. These solidarity payments will be substantially higher than those generated by the current European competition and are expected to be in excess of €10 billion during the course of the initial commitment period of the Clubs. In addition, the competition will be built on a sustainable financial foundation with all Founding Clubs signing up to a spending framework. In exchange for their commitment, Founding Clubs will receive an amount of €3.5 billion solely to support their infrastructure investment plans and to offset the impact of the COVID pandemic.
Florentino Pérez, President Real Madrid CF and the first Chairman of the Super League said:
“We will help football at every level and take it to its rightful place in the world. Football is the only global sport in the world with more than four billion fans and our responsibility as big clubs is to respond to their desires.”
Backing the new European league, Andrea Agnelli, Chairman of Juventus and Vice-Chairman of the Super League said:
“Our 12 Founder clubs represent billions of fans across the globe and 99 European trophies. We have come together at this critical moment, enabling European competition to be transformed, putting the game we love on a sustainable footing for the long-term future, substantially increasing solidarity, and giving fans and amateur players a regular flow of headline fixtures that will feed their passion for the game while providing them with engaging role models.”
Joel Glazer, Co-Chairman of Manchester United and Vice-Chairman of the Super League said:
“By bringing together the world’s greatest clubs and players to play each other throughout the season, the Super League will open a new chapter for European football, ensuring world-class competition and facilities, and increased financial support for the wider football pyramid.”

I read that the clubs who sign up to the ESL will be excluded from all domestic and UEFA competitions next year. It’s not like these clubs were looking for a new competition to play in anyway right?

This is them basically just saying that football is no longer about open competition; it's a closed shop and all about business, money and capitalism. They want to cut out the middle man (UEFA) and get all the money themselves.

I suppose we always knew that football was going this way. But this just really rubber stamps it.

So now if you want to play in the European Super League now, you'll have no choice but to be at a big six club. The greed is kind of revolting, but I do like the fact they're sticking 2 fingers up to the greedy fcukers at UEFA/FIFA.

I guess the way UEFA/FIFA strike back is to ban players from competing at the Euros/World Cup.

So all these clubs will have to offer a Euro/World cup international tournament or risk losing players to that.

We're going to go the way of Rugby. Where there's Rugby Union and Super League. And players will have to choose which one they're a part of.
