European Super League

Mixed feelings on this.

Don't particularly like the idea but we've all known football is just about money now. Also it's not like this Super League is splitting away from some squeaky clean background. FA, UEFA and FIFA are all bent. Just like this new set up.

It’s surely going to be difficult to extricate the champions league from players contracts, be fun if a lot of players have the right to walk or leave on clauses due to no champions league.

I can’t even refer to this tournament as a competition because it’s not, a mostly closed shop to rake in guaranteed cash. I just hope people decide not to watch or pay for it.

I hope this ends up being a negotiating position, and not and end in itself.

I don't know though. I have never cared so little about football as this year. We won the league, we beat the game. If they want a parade of meaningless games I'll probably just fade out of caring entirely.

I have one question that it seems nobody else has the balls to ask... 😉

If this is a European "SUPER" League, then why the blinkin' flip are Qatar Citeh, Arsenal and Spurs included in it? Don't they have one 1980s UEFA Cup between them, ever?!?

If City and Arsenal won't in, then the Super League would fail instantly

I read that the clubs who sign up to the ESL will be excluded from all domestic and UEFA competitions next year. It’s not like these clubs were looking for a new competition to play in anyway right?

And, what would happen to the TV rights revenue for all of the PL's other clubs? The broadcasters would certainly have claims for getting out of their current deals.

This seems an empty threat. Being excluded from European competitions seems like the point. And, FIFA/UEFA banning players from the international competition seems legally dubious. You can punish employees for the actions of their employers.

This is a huge pissing match. I think the clubs have a strong position here with UEFA/FIFA being both corrupt and not helping clubs manage COVID.

I expect there will be a negotiated peace after a whole lot of huffing, puffing, and PR activity.

Relegation has nothing to do with any of these clubs. It is essentially a closed format for 80% of teams anyway. And I agree that letting UEFA parade around with their suits and bribes isn’t really a good argument for staying within their rules.

All US pro sports are closed but add “franchises” now and then. Baseball and basketball have lower level feeders. It works out alright but we are just fans of a franchise. The deep cultural connection with local sports clubs doesn’t quite reflect the same here.

So I’m not really bothered. Who wants to do the same stuff forever?

I was being silly, mate... But now, a genuine question: City, I understand, but Arsenal..? Seriously? In a league that would include these names, you think THEY'RE essential? If the proposed league could exist without Bayern and PSG, why are the arse so important?

Not arguing... Genuinely interested in where you're coming from.

Well, speaking as one of these foreigneras who pays TV money to watch football,
I'm already looking for a new team to support if this goes through. Maybe Leicester, Norwich or Southampton.

If any of the traditional Big Six were left behind, I suspect most fans would gravitate towards them. Fwiw there are more Arsenal fans in Asia than City fans, in pretty sure of that.

Ok, so you're just telling me your thoughts, not anything based on financial data, etc..? Again, not picking a fight, just curious... I would have thought that, as successful as they've been since they were bought by Qatar, City are FAR more influential on a global scale than Arsenal, especially with new, recent fans.

Also, you're looking for a new team? As opposed to simply not watching anymore, or cheering for a different team in a different country..? Interesting. And I doubt ANY non "big six" fans would suddenly start liking them, if they don't so this. They'd just hate them less than those who do.

I might start following Leeds, or Dortmund, or just give it all up and watch floor ball.

I guess my point is follow sports for the emotion, the history, and the rivalry and without the fans you have no money. And that's why you need Arsenal and Spurs.

UEFA will ban teams from the European comps, so that will be a major obstacle for this to happen.
Lets hope it doesnt, as it will be the end of football.
When this gets to the top 20 teams from all the major leagues their cups won't we worth tuppence.

Is it just a negotiating tactic to get more say in the proposed changes to the Champions League?
I'd say an issue for English teams is that the league is so competitive there is no guarantees that they will always qualify.
In the current proposals the two highest ranked teams in Europe not to qualify via their league positions get invited in.
That would mean that in this current season Chelsea and Liverpool would not have to finish in the top four to be in next season's competition.
I thought that the "big clubs" were pushing for more exemptions for automatic qualification to safe guard their participation.
When non-participation comes at a huge financial loss or being unable to cover the investment in players (and players wages and transfer fees are at the heart of this) then it's understandable for PL clubs.
In 9/10 seasons the likes of Bayern, Dortmund, PSG, Juventus, Milan, Real, Atletico and Barcelona and even much smaller clubs such as Benfica, Porto, Ajax, Bruges, Celtic etc. are all guaranteed to be in the CL.

I reckon a huge number of people will share that reaction. This could end up bursting football's bubble completely.
Maybe. On the other hand once it's all settled down watching Liverpool vs a top team from another country every week (for the average armchair fan) may be more appetising than say watching Burnley.

Not that I agree but I doubt the hard-core fans are being targetted.

Well said. But an overhaul, that UEFA are not capable of (due to legal challenges) is definitely required. But due to court challenges there's no way the 'punishment' he calls for would be legally impossible.

Fair enough. Personally, neither team means anything to me... Nor do City, nor Chelsea. And I don't think that a league that seems to fancy itself viable without true European royalty like Bayern Munich would sink without trace if they didn't have both North London sides.

And, for goodness sake, don't cheer for feckin' Leeds, mate... Take up watching moto-cross before doing that!
