European Footy this week

As with the Utd thread, you guys are mad.

I'm glad Spurs got knocked out and I don't care how much of a cock Jorge Jesus is or isn't. But for the record his ridiculously cheesy Latin American soap star hairdo alone gives him licence to be as over the top and dramatic as he likes on the touchline.

Rafa put on Duvan Zapata, a striker, who subsequently scored. You're thinking of Cristian Zapata who plays for Milan!
Yeah I stand corrected.
Anyways taking off a 38 million pound striker when you need 3 goals makes no sense especially when they have nothing to play for in the league.
Anyway Rafa has turned Napoli around big time eh?

Please Leo or Rosco or anyone else that has this seemingly bitter long lasting hatred for Benitez can you please explain why you feel like that? and why it makes you want to do him and his credentials down whenever the opportunity arises?

My guess is that he mastered his own downfall with his stubbornness, and blamed others for the squad being weak when he squandered money.

Combine it with managing Chelsea.

Perhaps people have become overly critical because others are overly complimentary

As with all truths, the answer lies in between the two camps

He does my head in because people love him, and dismiss his faults. This leads to the argument being polarised. I respect him, and I'm very grateful that he was here, but I'd never have him back.

The people celebrating Chelsea winning the Europa league last year were the ones who's behaviour is a bit odd.
Yeah let's shout for a club who constantly chant murderers, who cheered and booed all the way through a minutes silence for Hillsborough a few years back.
I loved the man until he started managing those shower of fucking pricks.
He's dead to me now.

Yeah the people who wanted Chelsea to win a trophy because Rafa was there was odd. I wanted them to lose every game he was in charge. I don't hate him, he's not dead to me. I just don't care if he does well or not.

I think Fabio is partly right. I reckon a lot of the bitterness is just a simple-minded reaction against other people's excessive regard for him. The Chelsea thing is mostly just a craven excuse, well after the fact. Not for everyone, perhaps, but certainly most.

You know it must be some kind of irrational urge rather than a reasoned response because someone like Houllier never suffered from it. Nobody of sound mind would say Ged did a better job, and yet even his critics are respectful and warm towards him.

I said it before and I'll say it now, I don't understand how someone who absolutely doesn't want him to manage Liverpool can dictate which team he should or shouldn't manage.
It's one thing if he went and became Everton or Man U's manager.
He didn't have many options, hadn't worked for a year and Chelsea came knocking. I understand that he took that job. It got him working in England again and closer to his family who still live in the Merseyside area.

We're still reaping the benefits of Rafa's time in charge at the club imo.

"Rafa's respect and appreciation for Liverpool and all the people at the club is there for everyone to see. His legacy at the club is secure already. He won the Champions League in Istanbul and he got the club to another final in the competition as well.
"And the other thing he deserves great credit for is the changes he made to the club's youth academy. Four years ago he brought in Pep Segura and Rodolfo Borrell to coach the kids - and Frank McParland to direct the academy.
"There is a greater strength in depth at the academy now than there has ever been before and that is down to some of the changes Rafa implemented.
"Those changes have had far-reaching effects and they helped Brendan at the start of this season when he was able to draw on the talents of Raheem Sterling and others." - Kenny Dalglish

These Rafa haters also completely disregard his continued support of the Hillsborough foundation.

The reason I supported Rafa during his time in Chelsea was also because of the abuse he got from the Chelsea fans. I wanted him to shove that Europa league trophy and their CL qualification down their throats.

Yes well said modo. He's a flawed but v good manager. He brought us our best days in 20 years. He would have managed us when Kenny or hodge left but we didn't want him. I wanted vindication for him and for the ingrates undermining his success, to be proven wrong. And he did this when he won the EL. He's a Man more sinned against than sinning and Liverpool through and through.

I wasn't bothered when he went to Chelsea. I'd rather he hadn't have done it, but I don't blame him. Much like Owen for going to Man Utd. I'd rather he hadn't, but I can see why he did.

I didn't really know where to put this but here seems most appropriate: apparently if Chelsea make the CL semis they will play the 2 legs one week apart with the game against us in between.

That could be huge for us. Hoping they get a good draw tomorrow.

Same on that, i certainly wasn't cheering him on there though, that is just plain wrong, i did feel a bit for him once or twice but he put himself in that position, hes not daft and would have known what to expect from those fans.

As bizarre as it is that people really dislike/hate him its the making out hes some sort of shit manager that gets me, thats just completely fucked up imo, there is no doubt that the man is a top tier manager, he has a CV that 99.9% of managers can only dream of.

Hes bound to be loved and rightfully so, he made a dream come true, i think most level headed people knew he had his faults but get what you are saying, its one extreme or the other with some fans.

I honestly can't think of a single poster on here who has some fondness for Rafa who doesn't also recognize his faults. I can think of a couple that are the opposite though.

Yes, think you are right there, it just seems so wrong to feel any ill will towards him, theres many others to direct that to.

Was reading a match report and Soldado basically sucked. Has he really regressed that much or was he a flash in the pan? Amazing contrast to Negredo.

There's not a single player ot manager thats been faultless, we've had a lot that have not been as successful as Rafa was for a period. At the very least he deserves a little bit of respect.

Quoted for truth

True ...

Though Modo - as with many of his 'favorites' - tends to gloss over Rafa's faults ... Though I 100% agree with his post where we're benefiting from what Rafa did here (the youth set up).

That being said - his failure (and it is) at Napoli should highlight why so many of us were dead set against him returning to Liverpool.
