Its obvious on here people see this as a distraction from the league, but with arsenal, Chelsea, United and city all set to improve a lot this summer... Why aren't we taking it more seriously?

Yes it's not glamorous and yes we go to the arse end of Kazakhstan on Thursdays... But fuck me, champions league AND a trophy. It's surely worth a good punt and a decent side being used

Thoughts?

I hope we win the damn thing.

We should use this to start inculcating a winning mentality and also get use to playing domestic and European games. Play some kids if you really want to rest some players; but still start a strong enough squad. If we can't beat weaker teams with the much vaunted kids we have then what's the fucking point?

I want to win it, but at the same time I want us to use it to progress some of the younger members of our squad. If they all stay I'd start Bodgan, Illori, Wisdom, Rossiter, Markovic and Ibe in pretty much every game (at least until the knock out rounds), then fill in the rest around them dependant on squad condition. It's a great chance for us to flex our squad and improve our youngsters, whilst also chasing silverware we badly need.

I've never understood the hate. It's a lesser competition, sure, but it's still European football and some very good teams are involved.

I recognize that it's a distraction from the league but it feels to me that for where we are right now as a club, it's the perfect proving ground. There are a lot of games on offer and we have a lot of players that need game time away from the pressure of the league - this competition offers those games and nobody seems to care about it that much. Sounds great to me.

Set aside a group of the squaddies and young players at the beginning of the season and tell them that the cup games are theirs come what may.

The likes of Bogdan, Markovic, Allen, Origi, Illori, Ings, Ibe, Lovren, and Lucas should be the spine of this group.

The worst thing we can do is put together those awful teams comprised of a mix of squaddies, youngsters and first team players that look like they've never even trained together let alone played a competitive match with each other.

Also, the further we progress in this, the better the coefficient for when we DO get CL again

We've been shit in Europe under rodgers. Its about time he got us good in it, even if its only the europa

It lost its glamour when they changed it from a knockout competition to a lower grade CL with loads of shit meaningless games.

We're just not a team set up for knockout competitions though, so I'd be all for using it to give fringe players an opportunity.

Bogdan, Ilori, Wisdom (is he back?) , Ibe, Origi and or Ings, the other young lads coming through and then Balotelli and Lallana in the hope they catch fire and make themselves look valuable to other teams

Agree with this. He's got so little experience of European football he'd be an idiot to not view this as an opportunity. Like others have said, we have a decent squad size now and the depth of quality (bar a couple of positions) is good enough that we can use the squad - particularly the younger players - to ensure we don't adversely affect the league. In theory.

We'd really have to win it for it to be worth the draining impact on the league campaign. It's a wretched competition. It makes Middle Eastern wars seem less drawn out. As I said a few days ago, we should use a shadow squad, completely seperate if we can get away with it, and leave the first team at home.

we need to take it seriously..

Top 4 will be a struggle.. this competition is a back door into the Champions League..

Sadly with Rodgers at the helm and lack of European experience.. I expect us to go out after the group stage...

That being said.. Rodgers should use it to get some experience under his belt..

It's fucking shit.
No one cares who wins it anymore.
Only a moron of a manager would prioritise this over the league.

I never said prioritise it.. we should however take it seriously..

I don't think Sevilla thought it was shit, given they acquired a back door into the Champions League by winning it last season..

But they're very good! This is like Justin Bieber pondering whether to take seriously the idea of getting into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame because it will be good for sales.

And they can't even keep hold of their best striker this summer.
It's an awful competition.
If they changed it to a 2 legged knockout it would become instantly more interesting but it's really just going through the motions over the past decade.

That I agree with.. it should go back to 2 legs..

Sevilla have managed to win it 4 times in recent years.. selling their players left right an centre. at a huge profit.. it generally how the club is run..

Their recruitment policy a while back, was that never buy players for more than 5 million Euro... Worked well for them...

If we take it seriously and play out better players it will affect our league campaign. So fuck it off.

We won't finish top 4 anyway... so we may as well take it seriously after the group stages..

Play the kids in the group stages...

If they must persist with a group stage they should organise them regionally so that fans can travel easily and relatively cheaply from ground to ground and there's little travelling for the clubs. Or better still, revert to being the Cup Winners' Cup. They'll say of course that there's less money in that, but it needn't be like that - the Europa League is so long and dire that the attendances are often poor and the TV companies with the big money either don't have the room or the interest to bid for it. A simple, shorter, two-legged knockout competition would be easier to hype up, the games would be more of an event for TV and many more clubs and fans would get excited about it.

Happy to play the kids in the group stages, but if we do we wont be in it after that to take is seriously.

The Europa League is a lot of hard work and getting the CL place is a long shot.

Is it any shorter odds than getting into the top 4 spots in the Premier League?

Now we have a beefed up squad we should try to win each game and build momentum. Winning games trumps narrowing focus in my opinion.

Balance.. when I say kids.. fringe player with some experience in there..

we should be in theory be good enough to get through the group stages...

It's hard to judge who to play in the group stage as we don't know else is in the group with us. If it's a relatively easy group the play mostly fringe players and youngsters. Could give some young players some experience as well and it would make it easier to judge if they are ready for some more playing time in the league.
If the likes of kent and wilson aren't loaned out then it makes sense to blood them in these games, especially the home games. Also i'd rather play Ilori in these games than send him to sit on some other teams bench all season.
