ESPN buys rights to Setanta games

ESPN has bought the rights to the 46 English Premier League games in the 2009/10 season that were to have been shown by Setanta.

Disney-owned ESPN has won the two packages of games shown on Saturday teatimes and Monday evenings.

It has also won the 23 games per season that Setanta was due to show from 2010/11 to 2012/13.

The league took the broadcasting rights back from Setanta on Friday after it missed a payment deadline.

Haha, I forgot about Huckerby The Legend. Great stuff.

So can you get ESPN on Sky? What's the deal here?

Doesn't say yet. They already have ESPN America (as part of Setanta) so I guess they may add another channel and do some package.

No idea really though.

So ESPN are going to have some sort of new PPV channel on Sky then. Wonder if Virgin will get it also.

I wonder how this works for US customers of ESPN...

I had both fox soccer channel and setanta so that I never miss a liverpool game, but now that setanta has lost the rights, I wonder if ESPN will just show them for free on weekends on ESPN or ESPN2. that would be awesome!

from BBC:

ESPN's matches will be available on BSkyB

You will pay an extra amount for the ESPN matches

Games likely to be on a new branded ESPN channel - separate from the existing ESPN Classic and ESPN America

ESPN wants it on platforms other than BSkyB and is in talks with Virgin Media, though BT is yet to comment

My question exactly!! I am even willing to pay extra for an ESPN channel, but losing Setanta with no replacement would be awful. Fox Soccer rarely gets the good games, only Hull and Stoke.

If this highlights the work of Tommy smyth to the UK public, then I'm all for it. You're in for a treat.

Sport presenter Stubbs leaves BBC

Stubbs (right) was part of the BBC Euro 2008 coverage team
BBC sports presenter Ray Stubbs is to leave the corporation to be the frontman of ESPN's live Premier League coverage, it has been announced.

Stubbs, who spent five years on the books at Tranmere Rovers, presented football, snooker, darts and other sports in his 25 years with the BBC.

"This was always going to be a difficult decision," he said.

"But a chance to join one of the world's top broadcasters on day one of a new channel was too good to reject."

Head of BBC TV Sport Philip Bernie said: "Ray has been a fantastic member of the BBC Sport team for many years and we wish him all the best for the future."

ESPN acquired the live rights for 46 Premier League matches next season following the collapse of Irish broadcaster Setanta.

Stubbs's first match fronting their coverage will be Everton v Arsenal at Goodison Park on 15 August.

Unfortunately they are two quasi seperate companies. US Setanta will go on just as normal at least until the contract is up in a year. US Setanta is apparently a viable, profitable company.

I say unfortunately because ESPN has far more broad coverage.

ESPN intend to show 3 Liverpool games in the first 4 months (August-November).

Mon 24 August: Liverpool v Aston Villa (20.00)
Sat 19 September: West Ham v Liverpool (17.30)
Mon 9 November: Liverpool v Birmingham (20.00)

This will cost an additional £9 a month if you are on Sky - £12 per game! I would rather put that towards a few beers down the pub.

(It's £12 per month if you are not on Sky).

Ray Stubbs' chin is gradually moving closer and closer to his forehead. It is estimated that his face will have entirely folded in on itself by 2012.

Setanta Ireland have retained the Saturday 3pm match. How is that?
Woohoo

I wondered about that. It must be that the UK side of things folded but the Irish didn't. Can't wait t see Pat Dolan on our screens again

It has to be set up like that, cos the 3pm matches cant be shown here so they're on a separate package.

So what happens to Virgin Media customers like me?
No-one's confirmed, they're still in talks, but it looks like you'll be paying a little more than sky customers (£9 if on sports package already or £12 if not), so either £12 or more a month would be my guess.

Setanta broadcasts in US and Canada will be the same as last year. It was only Setanta UK that went into administration. Even though the ownership of Setanta North America changed in July 2009, the channel will still be named "Setanta Sports" and will be business as usual.
See here for detail: http://www.bci.ie/news_information/press230.html

so why will this work when setanta failed?

are they showing more games? do they need less people to subscribe or can they just run it at a loss in the uk?

i'm tempted to sign up if it is in hd and they had a range of quality sports to compliment the football.
