Emre Can

I think the key to unlocking the Can enigma is that he's a passionate, emotional player and that's why his game veers between extremes. His inconsistency has a pattern: when he feels valued and settled and understands his role well, he can be an absolute monster of a player. When he's in a bad patch of form, however, his personality doesn't allow him to hide on the pitch – and that's when he looks painfully laboured, fully expressing his emotional state on the pitch. I think Klopp is smart to have been playing him regularly in the last few games; he will need to nurture him back to the "monster" form in time for the Chelsea game as we will need Can at his passionate best to win the midfield battle.

I look at him and think he must be a beast in training at 5-a-side - hes physically imposing and strong technically, with a mean shot. However I still have no idea where he should play in the midfield at XI aside - hes not disciplined enough to cover the defence, mobile or quick witted enough to play further forward, and shows quite a high level of immaturity in his game management (giving away silly fouls, at silly times, in silly positions....although he trains alongside Lucas every day, so....)

At best hes a good backup for Henderson or Wijnaldum - but if his ego thinks he should be getting a trillion pounds a week and be one of the first names on the teamsheet, then Serie A beckons

Klopp says calf injury and not contract problems have been affecting Emre Can's form, by @JamesPearceEcho

Him and Hendo together is a disaster

One of them needs to do something adventurous, and not just be a recycler of the ball. The frustrating thing is that both have the ability to be more attacking, but they are strangely muted this season, or have just shown flashes of their ability which is not good enough for a team challenging for the title.

IMO the problem has its roots in the fact that neither of them is a natural fit in a deeper role. They've both had to adapt their game accordingly and it's left the pair of them unsure at times (Hendo less so than Can TBF) of what they should be doing and when. I'm not sure Klopp would agree with this, but IMO we need at least one quality midfielder who is naturally suited to playing back there, and have done for a long time now.
