Weak link in our team.

I've thought this for a long long time now - apart from his physical strength he's pretty clueless. Doesn't have a good enough footballing brain and doesn't offer anything in terms of creativity or goals.

I wonder if Can's size made him appear better than he was at youth / reserve level hence all the excitement about him. Now he's playing at a level where tiny margins of skill make a huge difference he's being shown up a bit.

It's not just his pace that affects the team it's that he reacts to situations rather than anticipates them which makes him look even slower.

Yeh, I like him as a player, but not in the system we play now and the speed at which it has to be played.

I've said this about Can before, but he can't really read the game. More of a reactive player. His passing is a bit erratic also.
I love his passion though, but the problem is, you can't rely on passion.
No one in our midfield reads the game as well as Lucas does, but his problems are well documented. Just hasn't got the legs for it any more.

There is little point in the team pressing and closing working hard to win the ball when someone gives it away all the time- it must annoy the fuck out of the others

Phew, luckily I missed this game and watching Stoke vs Man Utd.

Weekend still salvageable...

Edit: wrong thread

He's only 22 or so and there's definitely a player in there but it's in somebody else's spot, ie where Lallana or Wijnaldum should be. He needs a position that's his, and none of this current midfield 3 are those. He's much better as part of a 2 in a 4-2-3-1, and that's where he's always looked best for us

I still like Can and think his struggles right now signify a temporary loss of form rather than a fundamental incompatibility with Klopp's style. He's slowing the game down not because he can't play faster, but because somehow he is second-guessing himself at the moment. In the 2nd half against United we saw Emre Can playing on instinct and passion and he looked quite a player. I'm not giving up on him.

His problem is that he doesn't really excel at anything.

In the 2 of a 4-2-3-1, you typically have a ball wining / holder together with a play playing type. His game isn't very strong in terms of reading the game, and his passing is too erratic to be the ball playing central mid, so he doesn't fit either of those roles.

In a typical 4-3-3 you have the holder, the controller and the advanced runner - again, he doesn't really fit any of these roles.

So it begs the question, what exactly is he?

And if there's one thing I'm tired of at Liverpool, it's central midfielders who aren't particularly good at anything, but average at most things.

I think he is the holder – but not the Henderson type that covers a lot of ground, but a more traditional type, a (much sexier) version of Lucas. What does he excel in? Winning the ball in 1 on 1 challenges – at times last season he was unplayable in those situations, every time he went in for a tackle or other kind of physical challenge, he emerged cleanly with the ball. His struggles in this position in 1 game this season (when teammates expected him to be in the spaces that Hendo usually covered, but he simply couldn't do it because it's not his game) don't negate a string of excellent performances in this position last season.

There's obviously a player in there, just needs to go back to doing the basics...he genuinely looks like he's playing in treacle at times.

Very difficult when we have witnessed not to long ago the likes of:-

SG, Alonso, Macha, and even Didi was a master of his art taking Germany to a world cup final. What the fuck happened ?

Good question old chap - what I wouldn't give now for a Mascherano to bolster that midfield and cover the back four [emoji849]

According to a webchat wil James Pearce of the Echo, Emre Can and the club are still locked in negotiations regarding a new contract.
If he continues to stall and wont sign a new contract this summer, he'll most likely be sold.

There is still a player in there I feel but there are questions about his suitability in the team and what is role actually will be.
Juventus have been rumored to be interested. If they offer enough maybe we should sell and use the money to get a player more suited for us.
Difficult decision.

Well I think he's great which probably means he's fucking shit..... Carry on x
