Who do we go with for the next few games and the FA Cup tie?

Liverpool are facing a selection dilemma after Pepe Reina was ruled out of the FA Cup semi final.

A straight red card during this afternoon's 2-0 defeat to Newcastle, after the Spaniard made a headbutt gesture to James Perch, means the Reds will be without their ever-present goalkeeper when they face local rivals Everton in the last four meeting at Wembley on April 14.

Manager Kenny Dalglish now faces a dilemma as to who succeeds Reina for the Merseyside derby showdown with his potential successors offering little in the way of Premier League experience.

Alexander Doni remains Liverpool's second-choice goalkeeper, but the Brazilian has failed to make even one senior appearance for the club following his arrival from AS Roma last summer.

Brad Jones was drafted in as Reina's understudy at the beginning of the 2010/11 campaign but has featured just twice, in the Carling Cup and Europa League respectively.

Although he enjoyed a brief loan spell in the Championship last season, he was displaced by Ross Atkins, one of Pride Park's academy graduates, prior to his return to Anfield.

Liverpool are understood to be considering an appeal against Reina's dismissal at St James Park but could see the suspension extended to an additonal game, with the stopper also set to miss next weekend's visit of Aston Villa followed by a trip to Blackburn Rovers.

Dalglish, however, insists he has no complaints over referee Martin Atkinson's decision to issue Reina with his marching orders following the fracas with Magpies defender Perch.

He said: "We had chances and we were unfortunate not to get a penalty, and that would have left us playing against 10 men. Then they got the goal, which from our point of view was disappointing, and the boys showed frustration and maybe started feeling sorry for themselves.

"Pepe got frustrated and got himself a red card and Andy [Carroll] marched up the tunnel [after being substituted], he was frustrated and disappointed for himself and at the result.

"There's no problem with the red card for Pepe but there is a problem that we never had a penalty kick."

What's the "problem that we never had a penalty kick" in relation to? [Admits to watching the game with only 50% attention]. Did we have a good claim for a penalty or is Kenny referring to that Carroll dive, having not had it played back to him so he'd know?

Whichever goalie is better a saving penalties since I can't see us beating Everton in open play this time around.

Simpson handball on the line.

Oh yeh, forgot about that. When things like that aren't 'stonewall' at first glance [which is all the ref gets] I tend to dimiss them as something to complain about because both sides would be whinging for days after each match since there are so many incidents requiring two/three/four viewings before a conclusion can be drawn.

I recall Carroll appealed but with little conviction and nobody else in our team made much of it either - though that might be because they didn't see it.

I'm pretty sure he'd play Doni.

Is Gulasci fit? He was favoured for the bench over Jones last year.

It's a difficult one.
Doni is the most experienced of the two, but Jones has been putting in some good performances with the reserves.
I'm not really sure, considering match fitness....Jones maybe.

Yes, Jones looked fairly decent in the ressies recently. I hope Doni has at least learnt some English during his extended holiday in this country, seeing as he's done feck all else.

Jones makes more sense. Least he's got some form of playing time this season.

I have no doubt if that. But he hasn't picked a ball up in anger for months.

Sebastian Coates today backed Alexander Doni to make the most of any first-team opportunities that come his way over the next few weeks with Pepe Reina set to serve a three-match suspension.

The Spain custodian's red card at Newcastle United on Sunday means he could miss the Reds' Barclays Premier League clashes with Aston Villa and Blackburn Rovers, as well as the FA Cup semi-final with Everton at Wembley.
Doni is yet to make a competitive appearance for Liverpool following his transfer from AS Roma last July, but is likely to deputise in the absence of Reina - and Coates is confident he won't let anyone down.
"Alexander is a great person and a great goalkeeper. I am sure he will do really well," he told Liverpoolfc.tv.
"He has played for Brazil, one of the greatest national teams in the world, so he is used to playing in big games.
"He perhaps hasn't had an opportunity because obviously we have Pepe, but I think he will do well.
"I think he will make the most of every opportunity that's given to him. He is a great teammate and we all wish him well."
Coates and Doni both watched on from the substitutes' bench as Liverpool slipped to a 2-0 defeat at the Sports Direct Arena yesterday.
The Uruguay defender admits the Reds were left deeply disappointed by the loss, but insisted the team are already planning towards trying to secure a return to winning ways against Aston Villa on Saturday.
Coates said: "It was really hard. We all went there wanting to win, but it was a complicated game and a difficult defeat.
"I think it is really important as a team we keep believing in ourselves so we can move forward and try and get every point possible.
"The message in training this week will be the same as any other week - we've got to remain confident in ourselves and keep going forward.
"It's going to be a very difficult game against Aston Villa, but it's very important for us to win - and that's what we're going to try and do."
