Well, Pacheco will look great against, say, Burnley, but he might well be made to look anonymous against one of the best defences, and that's when he'll need our support. Spearing, on the other hand, is a good prospect who had a couple of bad performances amidst many bad performances by more experienced colleagues, and he's been crucified for it. If more fans had seen him over a long period in the reserves they would have shown him a bit of faith.

Messi got some kind of growth injections didn't he? Wasn't that what actually lured him to Barca in the first place?

He was heading for midget-size.

What happened?

Liverpool legend Kenny Dalglish has revealed that he thinks Everton's Jack Rodwell is the best player to emerge on Merseyside in recent seasons.

The Scot feels that developing local talent has become increasingly difficult over the last few years, making his work at the Anfield academy less than easy.

"Since Wayne Rooney there's been one, I think, boy who you could say that was Liverpool born and bred who's gone on to be a consistent performer in the first team, and that's Jack Rodwell," Dalglish told Sky Sports News.

"And he comes from Southport.

"So it's not like the [Liverpool] academy has missed anybody that's gone on to be a fantastic success.

"You can't get a game for Liverpool's first team because of your birthplace. You can only get it by your quality.

"But if there is someone who's born and bred in Liverpool then it's fantastic for everybody. It's great for the club. It's great for the community. It's great for the lad.

"So that's what everybody would love to achieve and love to see happen."

The former Scotland international is nevertheless very happy in his work with Liverpool and has no intentions of returning to frontline management any time soon.

"I'm really happy with what I'm doing at the moment, really happy with life and getting on with life. For me it's a great honour to be back helping with the development of the kids at Liverpool Football Club," he added.

"I think there's a good strong bond between the staff and that translates onto the players. For me you need to look forward to coming into your work in a morning, so I'm perfectly happy with what I'm doing."

A billion? There are older threads where we've gone through all of this before, so I don't want to do it all again, but those signings (Pacheco was one of them, by the way) was a short term response while the new move to attract local talent was developed - are you suggesting it would have been wiser to have sat back and wait five years for the new home grown players to emerge through the reformulated system? And these players ARE getting close to the first team, and several of them have already made their debuts, so, again, don't confuse cynicism with realism.

When Rafa first became our manager, I liked that he brought in many young lads with potential. It was and still is a good thing, but when you see nearly all of them gradually being moved on with, at best, a one or two first team performances, you do begin to wonder whether it's worth it. Especially so when in the past you saw it was players such as Voronin blocking their route.

Of course, it's extremely hard for a youngster to make it to the level required by our club, but in these past 5 years of Rafa's tenure you would hope, at least one would be good enough. And when that one is Insua, you begin to wonder again. That's really incredibly unfair on Insua of course, who looked fine in a team that was flying during the end of last season, and has struggled in a struggling team this season.

Good post.

The bolded bit is my biggest criticism of Rafa's use of our young players. He'd sooner give a de-motivated Voronin a chance, than a motivated Pacheco/Eccelston who are just chomping at the bit to make a name for themselves.

As silly as it sounds, I wouldn't mind us losing (as much) if I saw that Rafa was using the young players, experimenting and simply trying to build a future for the club.
But when we're losing with the likes of Voronin swanning around the field without a care in the world, you do question what Rafa is thinking.l

Thankfully its quite a while since we saw Voronin, even on the bench. Hopefully we will not have to watch him again

Mate, Voronin has barely played 3 games this season. He's been bombed out the squad snce his last game. Voronin is no factor in the development of Pacheco. Had Rafa known Voronin would have been so shit, I doubt he would have played him. Rafa thought of using him as he had a successful season last year and he is a senior member of the squad and an experienced player. It's not rocket science.

I find it laughable, idiotic and unfair that a bunch of clueless divs on a website want to pin so much hope on such a young lad, after only watching 20 minutes or so of him play

However that is what I'm going to do

Thanks Brendan. You made me snort in me cocoa krispies with that one.

Pacheco praised

By Al Campbell Tuesday, 15th December 2009

Daniel Pacheco has been praised by Rafael Benitez.

The 18 year old striker made his first team debut as a subsitute against Fiorentina last week and his confident performance there along with an excellent season so far for the reserves has earned him the praise of Rafa Benitez.

"Pacheco is a player with quality who has been doing really well for the reserve team," said the boss.

"When you are a young player with quality you need to show the passion and the spirit. We didn't have any doubt about him in terms of his quality and now he has to keep working hard because he is very close to the first team squad.

"He showed his quality when he came on against Fiorentina and he also showed that he wasn't afraid of his opponents.

"He now needs to keep working hard and be consistent. If he can do that then he will have a chance with the first team."

True dat!

"If" he does get given a go in the first team, where do you lot think he's going to play?

Out on the left of a front 3 or just behind Torres?

Thats the only sticking point, ideally he should play in Gerrard's position, but obviously it would be ludicrous to move our best player out of his position to accomidate a youngster. I imagine Rafa will play him on either wing or the less likely option of to drop Gerrard deeper and play him in the hole. But then it would mean two of Aquilani, Mascherano or Lucas not being on the field.

Yeah it seems that unless we move around a few players into different positions, he's going to have to play out on the flanks. Either way i can't wait to see him get a few chances.
