A billion? There are older threads where we've gone through all of this before, so I don't want to do it all again, but those signings (Pacheco was one of them, by the way) was a short term response while the new move to attract local talent was developed - are you suggesting it would have been wiser to have sat back and wait five years for the new home grown players to emerge through the reformulated system? And these players ARE getting close to the first team, and several of them have already made their debuts, so, again, don't confuse cynicism with realism.

When Rafa first became our manager, I liked that he brought in many young lads with potential. It was and still is a good thing, but when you see nearly all of them gradually being moved on with, at best, a one or two first team performances, you do begin to wonder whether it's worth it. Especially so when in the past you saw it was players such as Voronin blocking their route.
Of course, it's extremely hard for a youngster to make it to the level required by our club, but in these past 5 years of Rafa's tenure you would hope, at least one would be good enough. And when that one is Insua, you begin to wonder again. That's really incredibly unfair on Insua of course, who looked fine in a team that was flying during the end of last season, and has struggled in a struggling team this season.

Good post.
The bolded bit is my biggest criticism of Rafa's use of our young players. He'd sooner give a de-motivated Voronin a chance, than a motivated Pacheco/Eccelston who are just chomping at the bit to make a name for themselves.
As silly as it sounds, I wouldn't mind us losing (as much) if I saw that Rafa was using the young players, experimenting and simply trying to build a future for the club.
But when we're losing with the likes of Voronin swanning around the field without a care in the world, you do question what Rafa is thinking.l

Mate, Voronin has barely played 3 games this season. He's been bombed out the squad snce his last game. Voronin is no factor in the development of Pacheco. Had Rafa known Voronin would have been so shit, I doubt he would have played him. Rafa thought of using him as he had a successful season last year and he is a senior member of the squad and an experienced player. It's not rocket science.
