Swapping one attacking defender who's not a great defender for another good attacking defender who's a very average defender? No thank you.
Hes better at attacking than johnson though
They've both slipped quite a bit, and Alves (I think) relied far more on his speed than GlenJo ... so I'm a bit worried if we really go after this. I'd rather we get a better defender tbh.
He is underrated defensively. Sure, Barca's tactics requires Alves to play pretty much as a winger AND fullback and sometimes the space he leaves can get exploited. But he's been a rare player who has the energy to run up and down his flank the whole game – and when he fights for a 50/50 ball, he rarely loses. Maybe it's a short-term solution, but Johnson to Alves would be an instant upgrade.

Should have spent the extra 2 million about 8 years ago. Unreal player in his prime. Had a proper lob on about signing him back in the day.
Watched him live at the World Cup. He was fucking abysmal.

Why was he overrated?
Because I can't rate a fullback that is great going forward but gets caught out positionally defensively and struggles with defensive work, and yet he was rated the best right back in the world.
He played the entire right side of the pitch and was integral to that Barcelona team.
Was that all based on his ability? Didn't really follow him too much so maybe could have been due to fitness/injury/issues with big Phil etc. or maybe he is just cack now. He was superb a few years ago and not overrated in my eyes then.
