Glen Johnson for 17M is the purchase you make when you are tweaking a finished product. For us it was like putting a fucking fin on a car with a crocked engine.

Spot on with that one Farky.

To be fair mr Sheik, when we bought GlenJo we were tweaking the final product (the one that finished a whisker away from winning the big ticket).....and our engine at that point was a well oiled Ilmor! Not many would have argued against that engine being the best in Europe.

We knew Alonso was going at that point.

I really don't understand what happened this summer. It's clear that our financial situation hamstrung what should have been a summer of progress, but what I don't know is who knew what about the transfer market, when.

I couldn't fathom how Rafa thought a RB, no matter how good, was going to make the difference, when there were much bigger purchases to make.

I can't fathom Rafa being alerted, after already spending the brunt of his kitty, that he wouldn't be given any additional funds beyond sales, and not blowing up about it in the press.

I can't fathom why the owners didn't make a push, after being so close, it's penny wise pound foolish.

Hmmm, it's an interesting one alright. But, as you've both done extremely well, making an ultimate decision on GlenJo and Aquilani as summer signings after 2 and a half months is the correct way to form an analysis.

Well we decided to fix a perfectly fine engine. The idea sounded promising. It was to replace a sturdy piston with a lighter but faster one to provide more rpm and also to redesign the cylinder head to provide better torque. But for some reason we went and bought a faulty piston.....result a BIG FAIL. Other parts have started falling apart.

May be Rafa also factored in Arbeloa leaving for certain? If so, i'm not going to fault him for going in for a long term replacement and also add a player to help with the quota system that is fast approaching.

It isn't really an analysis of either player, to be fair. I haven't made any sort of judgment on Aquilani yet, but if both players end up incremental improvements on their predecessors, and Johnson doees, it already looks to be something that would pay off next year, rather than this. Rafa shouldn't have been forced to gamble in that way, especially after that year, but nevertheless he gambled on his confidence in Lucas-Mascherano as a CM partnership, and gambled on a level of patience for development which as we've seen, amongst most is in short supply.

As I said, it's difficult to evaluate Rafa's decision, when we simply don't know what he knew when, but something doesn't add up.

this isn't just about transfers. if he'd played yossi in the hole and put gerrard next to masch in centre midfield we wouldn't be in this position.

Rage. Stop it. You're being a very very naughty boy. Stop the insubordination and let some sunshine into your life.

Which on paper many of us advocated.

The problem is, you could see where Rafa was coming from, objectively. The preservation of Gerrard, who is obviously struggling to get over a niggling injury. Add that he's now out of practice with playing centre midfield, older, and Rafa still has the weigh up taking him out of his favoured and more productive role.

But generally I agree, for the greater cause sacrifices needed to be made and that was the obvious one, but like I said, you could at least see the reasoning in terms of Rafa wanting to preserve the roles of his two best players. It's a case of getting by in other areas but securing the best area of the side, or more importantly, 'attack'.

I just think he's blind to the sometimes obvious Mark, or is guilty of over-complicating the situation with 'what ifs'

It reminds me of when everyone on here was advocating a 4-2-3-1 formation long before Rafa stumbled into it.

Wood and trees spring to mind.

I've been thinking about it and my major concern right now is the fitness of Torres and Agger. We cannot win the league without these two IMO, I won't bother listing a reason for Nando as he is a god and we know what we're like without him but the defence just seems so much better when Agger is in there, without him it all falls apart. If we get purple playing in the middle I even think we could cope (wouldn't want to but we could) without Gerrard for a month or so. If Rafa recognises that (and doesn't play him in the bloody hole so the 'anti-brazillian' can play in the middle) and they stay fit I think we have a fighting chance. Let's face it, the league is the most competitive it has ever been, everybody will drop points, we just have to stop the rot.

I know this will come down to luck as much as anything but you can add my name to the list Oncy. I would rather come down of the fence and say "We'll win it" and be wrong, than say "We won't" and be right. We're Liverpool FC, and we can beat any team in the world!

The question isn't a what do you want. Of course we all want to win the leauge.

It's a question do we think we can win with Rafa in charge. Sadly I don't think we can. He simply makes to many errors on and off the pitch.

You are right our team can beat anyone in the world on the day. Sadly we do not carry this must win attitude into every league game and a shadow of the team that beat Utd most weeks.

Rafa cannot motivate his team to play at that intensity week in week out and hasn't enough quality to overcome the lack of motivation.

That question hasn't been asked (in here anyway) but I kind of answered it anyway. If he plays Purple in the middle, jibs of Lucas and we get a bit of luck on the inuries, then yes I think we can.

We're going around in circles.

I think Rafa has failed his primary target; which was no. 19..He deserved as much time as Houiller got which was 5 years; he got that and failed..has his time been a complete failure though?..no, it hasnt..he's brought 2 important trophies to us (even if he now thinks trophies aren't important)..he's also revamped the youth set-up and we're seeing more and more players come through, which will prove financially priceless in the years to come...and despite the bullshit football we're seeing now, this team is still better than Houillier's.

Even if he got sacked tomorrow he's still have my thanks for these things.

Now, does he deserve to go?

I think so; but I also think it would be suicidal if that happened..the ridiculously long contract extension given indicates that the pay-off would be over 16 million..that's money we don't have, and if it did, should be better used elsewhere...more importantly, Rafa is a good manager, and getting in any managers of even the same calibre would prove to be very difficult and very expensive as the new man would want greater financial assurances over transfers and the right to bring in his own people.

We cannot afford this.

Financially, Rafa must stay as long as we're stuck with Hicks and Gillette; and Rafa has to prove he can still extract quality from players and bring in the right ones....he's proven he can do it, even if his flops are sepctacular.

In a nutshell, I think we cant afford to keep him and we cant afford to sack him..time will tell which proves more expensive.

What has happened here???? ??? 🙁

Oncy closes the door and outed the traitors (ahem me included) amongst us and now reopen another barn door shutting out those who were faint hearted?

No chance we will win the PL. If we do, I shall eat jellied eels, pie and mash for one month! There...
